[WR] Age of Empires I: Farming in 3:28
IGT: 6:54
Difficulty: Easiest
Objective: Stockpile 800 food and control Ruin
I had to creep to the Easiest category since "Farming" without making a farm is a nice meme imo. Even better than "Hunting" without making any villagers (with Stone Age glitch + fishing ships or clubmen).
Also feels good to steal the berries of the annoying (in this level) red AI.
In theory, you can save up to 30s from the WR in Hardest difficulty as well with this strat. I'm not up for that grind, I could only do it in a normal game speed combined with vision cheat codes. The basic idea there would be that the 4 axemen will follow the first clubman, and the other 2 clubmen can win vs 2 enemy clubmen. After which the enemy villagers become easy prey. And the berries can be collected in peace while the axes chase the lone clubman.

    You could have shaved off more time by only using the hotkey to see the Rewards menu. Also what was preventing you from using dense residential earlier on? Was it lack of city services or something?

    Habbis! I saw this run several months ago and tried to beat you. I did not expect the amount of trial and error I had to put up with to actually get a good run, haha. I got a 1:03:01 today :D Thanks for posting your run, I would probably not have got into the game if you didn't.

    This is going to sound funny because it has been 4 years, but some of the footage from your speedrun is missing and nobody said anything. It is clear people do not actually pay attention. I sometimes do speedruns and am putting together a compilation of all of the hospitals together. Watching your footage of Eastville confused me so much. lol. Part 3 of 3 is probably supposed to be an hour, but it cut off at 42:40 so there is so much time missing that without watching it I thought you did it in like 23 minutes.

    11:49 nice click from below the cliff, knowing you need to click a bit further than the archer. That's like in other games with bows you need to aim slightly above the target to account for gravity in projectile motion. I wonder if this was intentional on the part of Ensemble Studios devs; I'm guessing not

    Out of curiosity: why not to start with the base AoE I demo and campaigns for the chronological vibe? ;D

      I was tempted to play the campaigns in a chronological order. However, the RoR demo is quite difficult and requires resolution changes, so it was better to start with. The AoE demo provides a 1 minute toilet break, so I scheduled it for later when I needed it. The overall order was the best I could think of to minimize the expected amount of mistakes and to optimize toilet breaks. For example, Egypt / Greece were easier campaigns, so I scheduled them for later since I predicted I would be tired near the end of the run

    Very nice to see not just pictures of the result, but the entire proces itself. Just picked up this old game and needed some guidance. This helps out perfectly well with creating smart zone planning with the right sizes, effective distances and all that.

    I still think the sound design in this game is unmatched. Later games' sound effects are more realistic, but the sound design choices in this game just has its own character thats just so satisfying to listen to while playing

      There is no glitchless category for the game in speedrun.com, so no at the moment. This particular campaign would differ in Opening Moves - I would need some more chariot archers before attacking, but apart from that there is no difference.

    Great speedrun. I'll have to try this. 1. Why all the neighbor road connections? 2. Why the neighbor subway connections? 3. Why the zoos and not any other parks or recreation? When I make a road, railroad or highway connection to a neighbor, I get none to light traffic? Why?

      1. The game implies increased commercial and industrial demand. I was also able to find this connection in my own tests, thought the exact number and pace of road connections is not well optimized for this run. 2. The game implies increased residential demand. Again, same as 1st question. 3. Parks increase your residential cap, that is, the maximum population your city can have. Zoos have the largest increase among the parks and is accessible through hotkey, so it is preferable over other parks. (Library is the most space-effective for residential cap, as in the infamous Magnasanti city video) Don't know if the traffic shown in graphics correlates to the increased demand effect. If you research the 1st and 2nd point further, let me know of the results!

    Great run and congratulations on the WR! It's about time someone beats the old record. Also thanks for the subtitles, as I don't speak Finish :) May I ask, what are the technical specs you use to run the game? Windows version, patches etc. I'm asking because I'd love to play the game again after have seen this run, but I know it can be a bit difficult to get up and running properly on a modern system.

      Thank you, glad you enjoyed it :) The vanilla game should work surprisingly well on all(?) Windows versions. For me, the Rise of Rome demo required a compatibility mode, though. At least Win XP Service pack 3 should work there. I assume that the nice backwards compatibility is due to Microsoft's role in the development.

      Depending on the game version, you may need to run in compatibility mode. I suggest Win XP service pack 3. I'm able to play RoR 1.0 all the way up to win 10 (don't know about 11)

      In-game music is disabled since the game freezes for a second when it loads each track (obviously bad thing here). Maybe I could edit the music in the video after recording, however.

    I recall a prebuilt City that was included with the game called Metropolis that had a starting population of around 2 million. But I'm sure that one took weeks to make. The fact you did this in an hour is simply astounding. Great work.
