Hello.i do glass repair and bevelling. I used blk sand paper with takes water to sand the glass down. I used,120 grit. Just mark the glass when sanding it goes fast . Sometimes the bezel is not round so I mark were the hinge is and sand were needed. Don't force the glass it will chip. Any questions please respond.
I'm new to this. What broaches would you suggest starting with? Sizes.
Nice! I'll thoroughly enjoy learning about doing this myself someday. Have you made any videos of taking movements apart to clean/oil them and install new parts?
Very good presentation
for sale?
Sorry sold a few years ago
Nice of you to film this. Thank you.
This is brilliant, such great detail, is there a Part 4, thank you!
Do you fix clocks for customers,, i have one that i took in for cleaning ond oiling now the hands don't work, but I'm thinking a complete overhall just to check everything
Love the video man, question would be what lubricant do you usually use for these clocks, I have an old japanese clock with a similar movement inside and was planning to refurbish it soon properly
So, my mantel clock runs fine but it only chimes at the hour, but not correct. For example, at 1:00 will play the first quarter chime, then at 2:00 it will play the second quarter chime, then at 3:00 it will play the third quarter chime. Then at 4:00 it will play the 2 o’clock chime. Any suggestions?? Thanks.
Thank You for a no nonsense instructional video on this. I have a few wall clocks and 2 standing and have been working on my own clocks for a few years now. It is very enjoyable. I'm about to replace a 30 day spring on a nice looking Montgomery Ward Regulator. Thanks Again. Nice Job !
How do you turn on the chime? Where is that located?
Where can one find replacement bushings etc. for the Seth Thomas 89
Hi, I sell them on ebay but you will need to know the sizes you will need. The plate thickness is 1.5mm. The outside diameter can be between 3mm and 3.5mm. The inside can be different but be the smaller allows you to open the diameter with a broach.
Hi, I bought a clock from a woman whose husband passed and had a collection. She said he had recently fixed it before he passed and I’m trying to get it to work again. It is a 73 Franz Hermle 140-010, can you make a video on how to fix it? :)
Thanks a lot for posting this! I'm preparing to replace a hermle 130-020. But hermle is new to me. A new movement is not cheap. Your video's really help me get the confidence to make the plunge! I was wondering. Do the new works come pre oiled / lubed? Or does that depend on the seller. Thanks again!
What is the silver flat bar above the hammers? I have an older Hermle 350-020 and my bar is black.
Great tip! Thanks
8:37 One thing I love about the clock repair community is that there are so many ways to do any particular thing. I've seen people describe scribing as defacing the movement, but others see it as a pragmatic way to assemble the clock so it can be enjoyed for years to come. Thanks for posting your take and suggestions on this practice.
I have been looking for this adjustment for quite a while. Thank you.
I found that the winding arbor does not stick far enough out to get the key on!
i have a Howard Miller Clock that has the 340-020 but has a different minute spring than the Hermle. It was like the one you took out of the clock. I can't get my to run and I think its in that vertical spring. It will not stay running and it is wound. Any suggestions?
I love your videos Thanks Dana
Hopefully it will be a good investment
Amazing design
And question when you replace hammer leather do you soak it in water or anything
Hi, No I just trim and screw into socket. Jim
@@JRCLOCKER thank you very much and what kind of leather do you use?
Hi Mr jim
Fantastic demonstration you make it look easy i have a Question please i have 5 grandfather clocks all working one of them i have a problem in pulling up are winding the center weight it doesn't hold its wind weight i have take weight off hold da chain and kinda pull bit fast to get it hold then i puts back weight while holding tension on chain ....is there something worn-out i need replacing other that it's chiming away keeping perfect timing much appreciated great video thanks 😀👍
It sounds like you need a winding click repaired. You might want to Google "clock repair near me"
On my pillar and scroll woodwork clock I can't tell which weight goes on time and which goes on the strike. One is bigger than the other. Any idea?
In most cases the bigger one goes on the strike side.
@JRCLOCKER Thank you.
my grandmother clock the pendulum will not continue to work
You might want to Google "clock repair near me"
Just wondering what my clock on and off stopping after service ?
Not sure what you are asking.
Thank you for sharing❤
Lol Jim you got cut off there
I had a very bad experience my first time using one of these, and needed 3 hands. The "clamp" on mine barely grips the wheel. I don't have a nice winder yet, but I learned my lesson that first time and now I only use this thing when it is locked into a vise, so that I have two hands free to deal with any issues that arise.
Sorry to hear that, I don't like them either. It was my first time in this video.
@@JRCLOCKER Well, you sure made it look easy! I just didn't have that kind of luck.
Wow that’s packed with dirt must have been exposed to the air
Nice
Acetone (nail polish remover) will remove that reside easily.
Why don't you use the Bergeon bushing cutters to trim down proud bushings?
I like using that brand of gel super glue too.
Hi again Mr Jim
love the videos keep it up very helpful
Any idea where one can get ahold of a piece of this foam? I have been wondering how to keep track if the wheels as I bush, example, if I know I need to bush the back of time side third wheel, I need to keep track of exactly which pivot that is so I make sure I measure/fit the proper pivot to the bush. And I've been confused as to how I can keep track being new, where I don't always remember which wheel is the third wheel.
I found out it is called polyethylene foam, used for packing and creating foam fitted storage cases for things, and was able to order a piece on Amazon.
Thanks Jim, really appreciate your videos.
Very informative video. I am working on the same movement from my 1905 black mantel clock. I am seeing a problem with my power spring for running the clock(...have not disassembled the movement yet....) Got movement running pretty good for a 24 hour period. Movement stopped & I could not get it to run for the last 2 days. Finally spotted what I believe to be the problem......the power spring when wound goes "off center" to the right.....when power is releasing the spring expands toward the top & eventually contacts the lantern gear above it stopping movement. In looking at both power springs; the one on the right is more centered but also seems to have a "guide pin" to stop spring from expanding up & interfering with any gears above...... There is no "guide pin" on the left spring....Seems if I were to add one it would keep power spring away from the lantern gear....... Is this a possible fix to prevent expansion upwards, keeping "lantern gear" from this obstruction ??
Hi Mr jim
I got stuck in 3:20, which is a part in which you mention that there are latches that fit into the grooves to hold the dial. Yet, you did not show how you took it out. From the easiness with which you took them out it seems to be quite straight forward to do. Yet. I am stuck on that part. I even took the dial / movement block out of the cabinet and tried to take the latches out of the grooves. They look like small black toothpicks that would be easy to pull off from the grooves. Yet, all four in my clock are stuck. I tried to pull with pliers to no avail. Either I am missing something very basic or my latches are different (you did not show it in the video). It might be that they are corroded. Any ideas / suggestions on how to remove these latches? Is there anything I must press and/or pull to remove it? BTW, this video is more than 3 years old and still helps a lot of people. Thank you very much for doing it!!
Really enjoyed watching this thank you. I have just been given a unicorn clock with the same movement. Mine was made in 62. Thanks Mark
Hi there - saw your UA-cam video on repairing clocks. I have a Hermle clock that needs repaired or clock mechanics replaced. The very top spring tiny thin wire is hanging out - unsure about anything else. Can you help and possibly how much or do you have a replacement for sale? Thank you kindly sir! Tried sending on eBay but it blocked it for some reason. So sent couple three separately there.
Wow liked this , searched in google about floating balance , got this really awesome 😮. Hope you also post videos on how to repair or oil up automatic or mechanical watches wrist watches .
So beautiful great work!! 😊
You make that winder seem so benign :-) I have a video of a 31 day mainspring getting away from me on one of those winders. Needless to say I now have an Ollie Baker style winder - much cheaper than a trip to Urgent Care. Thanks for the video - it was helpful to see how that winder is supposed to behave.
