Nigeria’s pre-colonial history stretches far beyond modern borders. It’s a history filled with art, war, diplomacy and, of course, drama. Before the British came knocking, Nigeria was a patchwork of mighty kingdoms and empires, each with its own unique culture, political systems, and innovations. From the iron-working Nok to the bronze-crafting Benin, the horse-riding Oyo, and the trade-savvy Hausa-these pre-colonial societies were vibrant, dynamic, and full of life.

The 5 Most Ancient African Civilizations You Need To Know
Переглядів 63721 день тому
Africa is home to some of the world's oldest and most influential civilizations, each contributing uniquely to human history through advancements in governance, culture, technology, and trade. Two major African civilisations developed in African antiquity: one around the Nile River in the northeast and the other, somewhat younger, around the Niger River in the west. The 5 oldest African civiliz...
Aba Women’s Riot of 1929 and its Deadly Climax
Переглядів 1403 місяці тому
What caused the Aba women's riots? Picture this: It’s 1929, and Nigeria is under British colonial rule. In the Igbo communities in the southeastern region, the British have imposed new administrative structures that are seriously shaking things up. Traditional governance? Out the window. Fair taxes? Yeah, right." Women decided to do something about these. And we got the Aba Women's Riots, somet...
I see some clowns talking in the nonsense, 95% of countries in Africa and the world did NOT EXIST with their present names. What HASN’T changed is the land/region and just like Nigeria with a new name, the people are indigenous to the land. Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Edo, Igala, Ijaw etc.
This video is so wrong either out of ignorance or agenda which the latter is more likely. U purposely opted out the Ogiso dynasty the first in the lower niger area and no type in history did any yoruba kingdom occupy Benin from that its not hard to know u have an agenda to fulfil, well reported for misinformation!
There was no Nigeria more than 100 years ago. Stop being ignorant.
These civilizations are ethnic nations in West Africa. Nigeria did not exist until 1914 when the British colonialists forged the idea. Nigeria is not an African concept but a European colonial project.
“Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt”.
Biafraud is dexd and buried. Biafraud was buried along with ojukwu when he was buried with Nigeria flag. Ojukwu was born a Nigerian, died a Nigerian and was buried with our Nigerian flag. God bless the federal republic of Nigeria
Please stop tell or talking about the African History You pink people have done enough damages and can anything good come out of the mouth of Liars Decisivers Thieves and so on Can someone that stole your people and brought stupid Religion to shackles your Brains, Thoughts, Independence and so on Can they ever write the Truth in anyway Leave Africa Alone and let the Africans tell their own stories You have all damaged Africa Enough
But you seeemed to leave out another Igbo civilization, the Aro civilization, although their origins is covered in mystery.
You are right about the Aro's origin. What I could confirm at this time, puts their emergence at 17th century, which is not covered by this overview--it ends at the 16th century. Thanks for the comment.
I love the Igbo's. Studying them in my research paper. Such a great African civilization ❤❤❤❤
Your analogy is not comprehensive enough, you omitted the kingdom of Igodomigodo and the Ogisos whose reign is dated as far back as 100BCE or later. You should seek to correct this or your work can be attributed to poor and lazy research or subtle agenda.
Thanks for your comment. I struggled with this and it's been on my mind. I'll look into it and update in subsequent videos.
@@Historyngpro Great job my brother. Am a Ngerian Historian, resident in Germany. Even though, there are ommisions, which is dependent on the historical materials you have at your disposal. The Histories of the ancient world before the first Egyptian dynasty, the Sumerian, Phoenician civilizations are ancient Nigerian civilizations, infact, Books like Tropical Dependency leads one to many other historical records, which are being kept in many Museums in the colonial Nations, hundreds of thousands of them. We also have proofs, that the first 5 dynasties of ancient Egypt, were the Phoenicians, the builders of the pyramids, the same who were in Atlantis and all over the continents of the world. The Pharaohs after the reign of Ptolemy were also ancient Nigerians, whose descendants today are the Hausas. The truths are hidden in the basements of the Oriental Museums of the colonial Nations, who literally cleaned out Africa, after the invasions of Kingdoms, countless genocides and of course, the cleaning of these Kingdoms wealth, thousands of tonnes of Gold, Silver, diamonds, precious stones, and so called artifacts were stolen by them. Please get in touch, if you want to know more, thats just a chip on the iceberg. The face of the Sphinx can only be predominantly found in South West Nigeria, the yorubas , who are the direct descendants of the Phoenicians. The colonizers changed our names over and over again, but our people never lost sight of who we are. There is a lot coming on this channel MotherlandAfricaSpeaks. Lest, without saying much, its the greatest conspiracy ever.
There was no such thing as Nigeria back then. Nigeria as a nation did not exist until 1914.
Suggest a better title for the video then.
Nigeria is not a nation. It is a colonial contraption of more than 350 nations.
Trying to sound intelligent but end up sounding like a clown, no country in Africa and the world existed with their current names. The name is new the region is unchanged, now isn’t that simple.
This is false history. History according to Igbo Biafraud. You did a terrible job.
Cool story. Where's your proof?
The ipob biafraud are very busy trying to distort the history of mostly the Benin empire and also of the rest of the southern part of Nigeria. They think that by doing this our children and our people will think that they are Biafrans. Just as they failed in 1967, they're going to fail. We the great Benin are not and will never be biafrans.
👍
You didn’t talk about the Ogiso dynasty, the kingdom the banished Yoruba prince took over to establish Benin kingdom
How do you all think this people to tell you true stories about anything they have destroyed
No banished yoruba prince took over Benin
I very much enjoyed this video, particularly your mention of the smelting site in Lejja, Enugu State. It seems fairly certain the site dates to 2000 BC and one source I read said possibly 2600 BC. This would match or possibly pre date any other know site in the world. Given the tie of iron working to the birth of civilization, that's kind of important. I wonder if it's Western bias that most often cites ancient Anatolia as the birthplace of iron working?
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Re Anatolia, I know what you mean, and I'm hoping it's because our discoveries are more recent that theirs, so work is still being done to confirm dates. For example, Nok was initially dated 500 BC until further testing confirmed it was much earlier. Thanks again for watching.
TAKE YOUR FAKE HISTORY WITH YOU NIGERIA WAS CREATED IN 1914 BY THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT
I noticed the Ogiso Kingdom is missing in this video. Maybe you can look it up and cover it in a different video
Love the video though 👍🏿
Exactly my thoughts, I don't know if it was deliberate or out of ignorance but it's omission convolute the history of coastal and Midwestern Nigeria.
Thank you for pointing this out. Yes, it's one thing I should have at the very least mentioned. I'll definitely work on doing a full video on the Ogiso. And include an update in the next appropriate video about this Era.
Truly appreciate your encouragement!
The NRI is ruled by An IGALA... Those are not igbo. Civilization
You must be mad, Attah igala was the last born from nnewi, modern day nnewi town in anambra state, nnewi was the only daughter of ERI the father of all igbos, Attah was a hunter, and according to history our people were farmers and fishermen, Attah introduced war like hunting expeditions, ERI was a priest king and he never liked it so he told him to go up north where bushmeat are in excess, when he got to the area, he found another tribe there, he married the chiefs daughter and became the king, he organized the same kingship style of NRI, which the priest, elders and the people have the ruling power, igala people speaks a dialect of Igbo language so we’re one, though because of intermarriages, the language is mixed, there was no record of Attah ruling NRI kingdom, the kingship always goes to the first son and Attah was in no position of ascending the throne, I’m from NRI kingdom and I hate people who make up stories about our history 🎉
@@janerama-nq6rwyou are the mad one spewing BS, go and learn your origin. I have never seen a people who try to claim everybody’s culture and they can’t tell you their origin.
Wrong title as Nigeria didn't exist until 1914.
You are right sir ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Young man, learn instead of thinking, you sound clever. These are part of the ancient Histories of the surface cut out by the colonizers to be called Nigeria, where great ancient civilizations thrived.
Suggest a better title.
Indeed a wrong title.
@@agunaboumuzocha7872 Mumu😅
Your comments on Benin Empire was inaccurate. Oyo was a small area prior and never an empire.
Do some research before you come on public spaces to speak on anything The oyo empire had every Yoruba states under it and other external states in Nigeria like niger state. It also spread as far down to Cameroon, benin republic, Togo, Ghana, Niger, sierra leone, Dahomey, mali, bukinafaso and cotonu. Benin was never an empire but a kingdom. That's why there's only one state to it and only few benin speakers. Get your facts right!
I'll recommend the book "African Cultures and Societies Before 1885" by Ekechi et al. The chapter, "Kingdoms of West Africa: Benin, Oyo and Asante" should be very enlightening.
The Pesse canoe is the oldest boat. The boat was build between 8040 BC and 7510 BC. It is now in a museum in Assen, The Netherlands.
Correct! I said that in the video. The Dufuna Canoe, built c. 6000 BC (that is 8000 years ago) is the oldest in Africa and 2nd oldest in the world. Thanks for your comment.
Keep the good work my brother, nteresting watch my late folks ancestry originate from the Benin empire and Oyo empire. We nigerians have this air about us depending on the social structure. All makes sense we know who we are deep down.
Absolutely! Thank you for the encouragement.
The video is 100% wrong and I'm telling u this as a Nigerian
@@princechangwook6019you are NOT a Nigerian, mumusan.
@joye5761 I'm more Nigerian than any Nigerian, ozuor
Fun Facts : Majority of us Nigerians have never found white pple to be superior or feel they possess higher intellect of any kind. If anything we strongly believe we can outsmart them individually 😅. However, we understand the benefits of their collective intelligence and their ability to work together for a common goal good or evil.
🔥🔥🔥
I totally agree 💯 we Nigerians never carry last but first always 🌍✊🏿🙏🏿
Well said
Superior to whom After they have stole all that belong to you and the generation to come They are still brainwashing and fooling you all They are no white people They are all Albino or Pink people
Well said, we taught Europe everything they knew, before they invaded us. The Greeks, Romans were students of Africans in ancient Egypt, before they invaded us with violence, sicknesses, diseases, stole it all from us and went on later to stample us as savages, what a world.
😂😂😂😂😂Egypt is not African it’s part of Palestine 🇵🇸 Egypt and Africa didn’t exist when we built ard Al kinana
Thanks for the comment. Fortunately for us, Egypt is in the African continent.
@@mayssaqra3311 no it isn't lol
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Methinks this exposition explodes the myths surrounding western notions of the African continent and it's many cultures. Liked and subscribed 👍☘️
I totally agree! Thank you very much for the encouragement.
What do you mean by Palestinian territories? Do you mean Palestine?
I do.
@@Historyngpro good. Please say Palestine then. It's a country not a territory
@@Damnnnbruh Noted. Thank you.
Nile starts in Uganda
This refers to it's furthest source, which is considered to be Kagera River, the source of the White Nile (one of the Nile's 2 tributaries--the other is the Blue Nile). Thanks for taking the time to comment
Good job. Two things though: The headline is overused. I did history in my o levels and this was the exact title of the story. Please find a way to make it more dramatic, as dramatic as the narrative you have gifted us. Two: The intro suffers the same challenge. It just does not manage to project the seriousness and cataclysmic impact the Aba Women's Riots had on the colonial experiment in Eastern Nigeria. Its almost trifling and playful. Lets give it some more muscle so it draws us to the story. Thank you for this great effort. We expect more. I think you can also ask your readers to suggest topics.
Thank you for your insightful comments and suggestions. I'll review and make some changes. Although, regarding the title, I left it at that so that it's easy to find but I think adding a subtitle might make it a tad better.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽I love this
Thank you. I'm glad you do.
Nice concept, great story telling
Thank you.
