If you were looking for goals during the inaugural season of the Premier League, Boundary Park was the place to be. That season, Oldham Athletic was a guarantee for excitement, with only Manchester United, the champions, and newly promoted Blackburn Rovers, who finished fourth, scoring more goals. Blackburn netted 68, United 67, and Oldham, along with QPR-who enjoyed their best Premier League finish at fifth-scored 63. However, only Middlesbrough, who finished second to last with 75 goals conceded, let in more than Oldham's 74. It was a tense season, but Oldham, with a little help from Arsenal's 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Highbury, managed to survive by a mere two goals. In the end, Crystal Palace was the unfortunate team to be relegated alongside Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough to what was then known as the Endsleigh First Division, now the Championship. Both had 49 points, a significant total considering Luton Town had been relegated with 42 points the previous season, while Coventry and Norwich stayed up with 44 and 45 points, respectively.

Shouldn’t have gone down that season. But this was one of a number of games we threw away in the final minutes.

I think the 'ooh Roger Palmer!' chant came from the electronic scoreboard which would flash up 'ooh!' whenever there was a close chance and then often followed it by flashing up 'Roger Palmer!' when the man himself had put it in the back of the net. At least that's where I've always thought it came from! Thanks for the memories and a rare interview of the man himself! If only that backwards header against forest had gone in! Time stopped for me and half of Wembley at that moment!

Just thinking it must have been difficult for other teams to play on the 'plastic' pitch.

I've been trawling through Everton games of this era to see if I can find me and my dad. He died this summer ...1.47 , there is he is sat next to a 9 year old me. 1.51 he's clearly not happy with the ref ( right of the screen with the tash) ! Thanks for the upload ! .....I remember this game having a really tense atmosphere, and my dad launching me up in the air when Everton got a penalty.

The greatest FA Cup semi final day bar none. Liverpool suffer a shock exit in a absolute classic then this brilliant encounter. Say this as an Everton fan.

The benefits of a plastic pitch. Utd got Irwin and we took Milligan - he was absolute garbage for us. Like Blackburn, all the fans coming out of the woodwork when they did OK for a few years. Which club has the least fans now? Like Luton and QPR when they had to play on grass they soon disappeared.
