Salmon on a Dry Fly-Upsalquitch:2024
Dry Fly raises and take of a nice sized Atlantic Salmon followed by live release.
Mike Nowlan is on a Crown Reserve stretch of the Upper NW Upsalquitch. A heat wave is upon us and the Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans has advised of restrictions regarding angling of salmon across New Brunswick. As such, we are restricted in fishing for the morning hours only. There are salmon in the middle and lower 9 mile pools. Water temp is 62-64C with air temp in the afternoon a balmy "feels like 36C". The fishing is spotty with very little interest from the salmon on the 1st morning...However, the 2nd morning provided some exciting interactions! Video shot on a GoPro8 camera.

Get the "bag" out of your line; when you see the raise that fish has already felt the hook.

When the fly gets into the foam, the fish does not see it.And frequent casts from the point of view of fish, interest disappears.Pauses are needed .

Well..... I'm totally amazed! There are a few lessons learned here 1. PERSISTENCE 2. CHANGE THE FLY & 3. PATIENCE I can't believe how many times that fish had a go. Another thing noticed when it took....... I thought that's not a big fish........ but it was very deceiving until I saw the amount of water it moved at the 5.20 mark and then showed itself as it spat dropped the fly. What an awesome fish! Brilliant experience! What a superb lesson in salmon fishing! Expect the unexpected! Also, I was very impressed that there was cursing at the end!!!~ :) Tight lines to you guys and keep 'em comin'!

It's not a male🙈 Jesus Christ what a bunch of amateurs...no mend, very poor fish handling - pulling it by its tail all away out of the net. And not even capable to classify it correctly 🤮🙈😭 get yourself educated in what you do!!! the poor creature has to suffer cause of your miserable understanding of treating it right🤬

  • @mcolisekim

to increase your prospecting, you need better line maintenance. in order to avoid a belly forming in your line, keep your tip higher, and also use a small mend to the first 1/4 of your line. straight lines catch fish, like the one you landed. the more time your line is on the water, the harder it is to keep straight, instead of recasting your line when it bows, repositioning it is a better option, because it keeps the fly on the water longer. hope this helps, tight lines!

I had 2 orvis clearwater 10' #6 rods break on me. The 1st one broke, after a light tug, to free a fly caught in an anchor rope. Catastrophic failure, the rod shattered in 3 places. The 2nd one broke at the tip,I tested the tip close to the break and it snapped like a tooth pick, zero tensile strength. It is not the angler,it is the rod!

I have fished the dry bug for many years now and always find that if I present the fly on a clear , sheet of water I get more action. As well, I usually move my rod upstream just before the fly drops to the water to get the float line above the fly---this gives me a better, longer, ripple free presentation. Float it dead. Nice video with a nice fish. Tight lines.

@andyp9678 That was the first thing I checked...I looked at all the connections and they were all seated properly and completely. We all have a loose connection off and on and in the boat I was convinced I either had a partially seated butt to 3rd piece connection or I had "over dragged" him...the latter was the cause. Mike

Entertaining. A few thoughts. A cast further ahead of the fish, with a good mend in the line or an aggressive wiggle cast to throw more slack in your line would have probably taken this fish in a cast or two. If I could see the drag on your video, the fish would most certainly have seen it as well. The fly you mentioned Is basically a very large version of the irresistible, a famous trout fly. Given this pattern, a simple bomber pattern might have worked as well, though this water appeared to be pretty slow and these are usually stripped in water that is a bit faster. In any event, you managed to piss him off enough to take the fly, and you waited long enough to give him a chance to take it. Regarding that, the rule of saying "Gotcha" before setting the hook can help minimize premature hook sets. Looks like you had fun and that's the most important part of angling!

Seems like he was setting the hook to fast maybe not but I find my hookups are way better if you wait until the fish has taken it under .

I heard a rod snap on the Chilkoot River in AK. Salmon fishing. It sounded like a .22 going off. I looked around and saw the guy with his broken rod HANDLINING the fish in. A big king, I think. All I a saw of the fish was its head in the guy's hand as he drug it to shore with his broken rod in his other hand. A BIG head!
