Hi! My Name is Mark and I am super excited to launch this channel. This is where I share my love for music and musical instruments in general, as well as showcasing both sacred and folk songs played on one or more of my instruments. The arrangements are my own. I don't play from sheet music. I hope you enjoy my videos. I am not a professional, just a regular guy who loves having fun with music. There are a lot of great musicians on UA-cam, and I don't count myself among them. I consider myself a folk musician. I just love music and want to share what talents I may have, and maybe encourage someone else to pick up and instrument themselves! Feel free to chime in, and leave some feedback. Please be kind.
Danny Boy (Lorraine 29 Double Strung Harp)
I am working on some new music, but in the meantime, I am recording some songs I have done before. This is one of my favorites!

Hi Mark! I just found your videos as I’ve been looking for some simple beginner pieces for sight reading. I saw your videos that offered PDF freebies have various older tunes but when I clicked on it, it seems like the links are dead. If you could post them somewhere, that would be wonderful. May you be well, peaceful, and at ease. 🙏 Thank you for sharing your music.
lovely! God bless your work! I play a 22 string harp from Israel. Janet gave me your name. You are famous now! ;-)
Oh my goodness Mark! You've helped me to take a recent song I'm working on to a higher level! Thank you tremendously!
This is one of the most beautiful arrangements of this song for harp that I have heard. Thank you for making and sharing it! 👍👍👍
How to download the free pdf sheet?
Thank you ! I have a dble harp n wanted a kind simple start on it to encourage myself. Thank you !
Ooooh, I hope I will be able to do that someday. Thanks for the lesson.
Good Job thanks for sharing your experience, with Harps.🎶🌈😎
Did you buy one? And which one did you get?? Enjoy playing
Hi Mark! Thank you for the lovely sound! I have a question, is it possible to have lower octave on the left and higher octave on the right? Can I tune this way? I'm just a curious beginner playing Harpsicle for now but really interested in double-strung harp. I would like to buy another one with more strings but I would like to know if double strung could be an option to reduce the space needed to store...
Praise him with the harp, and that’s exactly what you did! Beatutiful!
I recently bought my four year old a pendant ocarina to tootle around on for her birthday. As it turns out. I LOVE playing it. My longtime dream has been to play the harp, but in the interim, since a harp is so far out of my price range as to be impossible even to do a rent-to own right now, this little ocarina is bringing king a lot of enjoyment (don’t worry, she gets to play it, too 🤣), so much so that I’m considering just going ahead and getting one for myself (larger than pendant) in a couple months just so I can play a wider range of music. I don’t use any books or instructions, just have found my way around the instrument and playing by ear. I’ve had a lot of music in my life and always ended up feeling like a failure at it. Piano, violin, ukulele, but this time I’m only playing it because it’s fun not because I have to, and it’s healing my relationship with making music, which I was beginning to feel was permanently ruined.
So pretty, peaceful. This was posted a month ago and just showed on my feed and I am subscribed. I will have to specifically search in future. Again thus is so pretty!
I love the core melody. You've added too much froo froo and tsken away from its simple besuty.
I love hearing you play, Mark. Like the other lady said, your music goes straight to the heart. Janet
perfect! ❤😍🇧🇷
I can attest that learning to play the harp, actually saved my life. Admittedly they are not the cheapest of instruments to buy, let alone get lessons! But a second hand harp (always by a cheep old one rather than a cheep new one😉) is no more expensive than a gym membership or yoga classes, and much less than therapy!! My harp opened a door into a whole new way of seeing and listening. It led me to finding my musical voice ( I’m not talking about singing) and has been a refuge in hard times. Not for nothing is the Harp considered to be the queen of instruments, and known for producing some of the most therapeutic sounds. In my experience, it is not possible to play the harp when one is angry or upset. One might start that way, but within seconds one achieves “alpha” and calm reigns.
Lovely Mark. It draws my heart right into the music. Thank you for sharing.
Love the sound; thank you Mark ❤
Yes, that was so pretty and very calming. Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful ❤❤❤
Just beautiful, Mark. I hope you don't get tired of me saying how your music conveys such calm and peace. Thank you so much.
Beautiful! I have always loved this song. Thank you for posting it here on your channel. Your harp playing is always lovely, 🥰🎶
Your harp has a beautiful tone to it, well played.
Thank you!
One of my very favorite hymns, and beautifully played, thank you.
Many thanks!
Thanks for your videos, Mark, I have been binge watching your channel! I’m very interested in buying a double strung harp, do you have any tips on where to look for them used?
Hi Jack! I highly recommend Carolyn Deal. She is also on UA-cam. She specializes is selling, and facilitating the sale of preowned doubles.
i got my second hand double Brea in December, to say it's just pure joy and love would be an understatement 😌 i mostly improvise but regardless we make a great team with my Brea 😌 saving for a 34 string so can get more technical one day but gosh ive lived to play harp even just for my dog and cats ❤
PS what is cross strung?
cross strung is a type of double strung harp where the strings are strung from the bottom on one side to the top on the other side, crossing in the middle. It's usually chromatic, which means it can be played like a piano with the sharps and flats. I have never tried one, but I would like to!
@@MarkFosterMelodies WOW! There's so much I don't know! Thank you for teaching!
beautiful, and i agree with your take on musical instruments being a privilege
I´m glad that you are back!
Lovely, Mark! Very inspiring.
As an untalented person who still enjoys whatever pretty sounds I can make on my little double strung harp, I totally agree. My little grandson fell asleep in my arms listening to your lovely music today. Thank you, Mark. Janet
What make and model of double-strung do you have, which notes (if any) have levers, and what key do you have it tuned in? If you have levers on certain notes, you can easily put the harp into pentatonic mode, and any random strings you pluck will sound amazing!
Mark, I have a fully levered Stoney End Eve, and I do enjoy playing in pentatonic.
@@alanandjanetpohl4043 Oh, good! I'm actually Gregg (organist1982).
Very pretty.
Thank you! 😊
Kalimba! Sweet and goes everywhere!
Yes! That is a good one!
@@MarkFosterMelodies I’m SO glad you’re posting/uploading again!
In your estimation could a 6year old play one without being extremely likely to damage it? I got an ocarina for my 4 yo, and have been considering a Kalimba for my 6yo, but was a little concerned it might be more fragile and therefore upsetting to her if it were to get broken.
@@sorelyanlie2784 It depends on the maturity and temperament of the child. Some young children are very careful with special things, mothers are careless and seem to enjoy breaking things. It’s how respectful of gifts and music is the child? A kalimba is not a huge investment. Many children start playing violin, recorder, piano, etc at 3 or 4. Sit with your child and supervise in the beginning, and see how she does. Certainly she is old enough to learn to play. If she is rough with it or careless, teach her how to care for it, encourage her, praise her good behavior and even the least amount of progress. If she’s still careless with the kalimba, keep it from her till she matures a bit. If it accidentally gets damaged, wood glue and a clamp will repair it. I think it’s $30 or so being very well invested in your child.
Love this, it's Peggy from central northern Michigan. Glad you are playing and posting again.
Thank you Peggy!
I Just got a mini harp kit from Waring. Just found your videos. I appreciate your tips for the Very Beginner.
Nice informative video! I can relate. I am an oboist, taught music in my younger years, and I love instruments and making music. I acquired a used 26 string harp and started learning to play through video courses, and then bought a Fireside harp kit and built it, and now just acquired another small used harp called Sassafrass, made with fiberglass. (All within 2 years!). I added a strap to the fireside just like you did, only I still have a hard time holding it. It shifts as I play on it. The strap at the top slips off the top of the harp and the harp drops while I play on it. Does this happen to you or anyone else reading this?
I never had any issues with the strap slipping off. The harp does shift a bit to one side while playing it when using a strap, and it take a bit of getting used to.
Thank you, that was very helpful!
So beautiful. I have enjoyed your playing in the past; lovely to have you sharing your gift by recording again!
I love this one also Mark. You play it so beautifully. I often play it with Day by Day.
So glad to hear you playing and posting the small double again. Lovely! God bless!
Hello Mark from Upnorth Michigan… been a very long time since I’ve heard you play this Brittany. And one of my favorite hymns. I sold my double strung and would love to have one again some day in a floor model I don’t have to hold or balance. Beautifully played thank you 🦋💕🦋.
So glad to hear you play again and it was so meaningful to me today. Of course, God is so good, He blesses us with music when we need it!!! Sending blessings of peace, joy and good health back to you and family. 🪷
So glad you’re back, Mark. Thank you for sharing your lovely music and spirit with us.
glad you're still hear, must be busy these days? do you still sell whistles? hope you're well
I’m not currently selling whistles. Life has been crazy the past couple of years. Trying to slow down and get back to music!
@@MarkFosterMelodies i have longed for a pentatonic irish whistle, would you be willing to send one? id pay good money for your work, we could sort things through email, take my money good sir :) wishing you all the best in life, youtube and my ears have missed you
Mark! You're back! Our dear brother in Christ, we have missed you. I needed this beautiiful hymn today. Thank you so much. God has given you such a gift. May He bless you and your family.
Thank you! It’s good to be back!
Thank you; peaceful moments ❤
I’m very glad you enjoyed it!
Wow! Tuning the harp depends on what the majority keys are used in the worship. Most people sing in b's, in my church tuning in key of Eb is necessary in playing most of the worship that's available. I'm in transition from pedal to lever. When playing a song that's in a different tune, one can just do glissoandros in the b's ones harp is already set for. Revelation 14 "Harpist playing their Harps"! God Bless!
So happy to hear this! More double strung harp tutorials, please! I’m a beginner.
