I Tried A Nikon D850 For The First Time

After being told countless times how amazing the Nikon D850 was, I decided to get my hands on one and give it a go. Although my expectations were high I was still surprised by how well this camera performed. Recently I have been thinking about selling my Fujifilm GFX 50s then purchasing another camera, my original thought was the Canon EOS R but after being told how good the Nikon ZF is and aft...

1 Year With The Fujifilm GFX 50s & Mitakon 65mm F1.4
I agree that the XT-4 is a wonderful camera and still has a lot of life and viability to it. I've owned 1,2,3, and now 4. I also own the A7C, and the A7 IV, in my opinion those are great cameras with phenomenal autofocus comparatively speaking but they are for work. Granted I’m not a full-time photographer or videographer. I just don't have to worry about settings with them and they get the job done. With regards to the XT4 and those series of cameras I think that photographers tend to rely way too much on autofocus. I also think that shooting wide open tends to be a cheap way to mask poor composition. I know that might be a little triggering and a bit of a hot take. People have been using cameras for over 100 years now without autofocus. I love this camera I have tons of viltrox lenses for it. I have cheap manual focus Chinese lenses lenses as well as Canon vintage lenses. I do use it for video occasionally. I just love the images and the video that comes out of it. Great video BTW! I really really miss my X-Pro3.
In short: yes, it is. I bought the XT-2 last year, mainly because any camera the last 10 years still produces lovely pictures. I pair my XT-2 with my canon FD lenses, because i don’t care about autofocus. I shoot documentary / lifestyle mainly, and tend to make a few pictures from time to time. I bought it to use next to my film camera, because film is expensive - so to alternate between them is both fun and spread the cost. Haha!
I'm the one that hates fully articulated screens. For video too mind you, course it throws me out of balance when I'm running & gunning. However, I can see, if you want to film yourself without the hassle of using external monitors, fully articulated screen is a necessity. Unreliable autofocus? Yep, the reason I work with manual focus more and more. So you can't call me lazy 🤣
Merry Xmas to you and your family
Gotta stop selling yourself short brother. Good work is good work, clients don’t care about your gear. Take those jobs. Grow. Make that money. Reinvest. And after you start buying that gear you’ll realize you’ll still always love that original setup. Think less, do more. You’re an artist.
Great video, the subject seperation was amazing. What Nikon lens was that? I did look at the Zf but I've decided not to because I think I prefer cameras that can utilise custom settings banks to quickly select from static to action type photography shots.
Cheers! And it's a yongnuo 50 1.8, a super cheap lens which is surprisingly good! You were the one who sparked my interest in the ZF quite a while ago when you mentioned the ZF and the voigtlander 40 1.2 and ever since I couldn't get it out my mind haha
@@taranspictures I was extremely tempted because of that but the head won out in that ideally I like being able to switch to different shooting modes quickly. My next camera will probably be a Lumix S5ii. Wow, can't believe the results from that cheap lens.
Canon and Sony are Good Cameras, however they will NEVER be Nikons
I did love how the d850 performed!
i had Nikon Z6 II for three months and swapped it to Nikon D850. Absolutely loving it. But I thought I am bonkers, everyone is going from DSLR to mirrorless, right? But have since found out many professional shooters who have done the same.
Yeah I've seen many people go back to DSLRs recently, I think its because DSLRs can sometimes feel more refined than mirrorless cameras thanks to the technology being perfected time and again where as mirrorless cameras are still relatively new
Seen this video many times, not tired. Got one recently, glued to XT1.believer of a one camera, one lens.cheers.
Hope you enjoy it:)
Olympic thrower ay 😂
Just cool like that😎
2 KG is a problem? Really? Seriously? For the most part of my over 30 yrs. long career I've been carrying a bag with 20, sometimes 30 KG of equipment on my back, almost EVERY single working day, while sometimes dodging live rounds. That bag fu*** up my spine. Literally. So pleeeeease, stop complaining. Otherwise I just might say that younger generation is way too soft 😉 I don't like Canon. That's the one who broke my back. But even that is better than Sony, which I hate with a passion. I did my first wedding an eternity ago, while sporting just an (than already old) Nikon F2, with just 24 & 50mm lenses, and small dinky flash. No AF, or any automatisation whatsoever. And pictures turned out great. My last wedding I've shot on the Fuji X-T2, with just two lenses, an 16/1,4 and 56/1,2 lenses. While shooting video only. It can be done.
I'll complain as much as I want😎
@@taranspictures Well at least you'll not end up with the broken back I guess...
Haha!
You CAN trust film. Especially fresh one. What you CAN NOT is trusting old film cameras. Especially if they never got any CLA.
Well said, however, I have bought film before, brand new from a reputable provider, shot correctly with a camera that had no issues and no issues with the chemicals but my photos were buggered. I contacted the provider and I managed to get a refund for the film which was nice but no idea why it wasn't working properly
@@taranspictures Sorry to hear that. I've never had a problem with fresh film or a lab. Ever. The only time something went wrong is when I screwed developer or developing time...
It was such a strange issue, I feel like something must have happened to it from where I bought it without them knowing
I hope Nikon brings out soon as possible 28-70 f2
It seems everyone is bringing one out recently so I wouldn't be surprised
Started with Nikon never it like it went over to canon then Sony but now back with Nikon z9 and z8 both amazing camera and stills worth every penny in 2024/25 the feel in hand is so much better than the other two sony/canon
Glad you're enjoying it!
I recently picked up a Zf and 40mm f2 combo and it is a joy to use. The B&W mode with the flick of a switch is my go to. The images are great SOOC. You'll definatly need a grip as the camera is a lot smaller than the GFX and the D850. The only gripe I have is the flip out screen doesn't tilt up or down, just out. Adapting older fmount lenses is a great way to keep the cost down as well. Looking forward to more videos. Cheers
Glad to hear you are enjoying it! I was definitely going to get a grip, I like the look of the neewer one with the added thumb grip on the back
The magenta cast might have been the lens, I have used Nikon for years and I don’t normally see magenta in the images. As for the bokeh you are right it’s very nice so the comments about a cheap lens on a pro camera is irrelevant if that look is what you are aiming for. I have some Chinese lenses for my Fuji XT1 and they are really good. Nice images and thanks for the video 👍
Good point I didn't even think about the lens being the cause for the magenta! And thank you very much, I really appreciate it:)
@ no problem hopefully that will be the cause and glad to help 👍
I went and shot at the same place again today but with my GFX and I had the same magenta issue. I think it may be because there is so much green in the environment, the cameras are trying to overcompensate. I've never had white balance issues with the GFX before so it's weird
The Nikon D850 you can change the megapixels of the raw files.
That's pretty cool, I've only heard of being able to do that by applying a crop
@@taranspictures I think the smallest raw file the Nikon D850 can do is a 11 megapixel and its a 12-bit raw file. I know PhotoMeike made some videos year ago about this.
@bigrobotnewstoday1436 that's pretty cool!
You've obviously never tried the GF 55mm 1.7......and wtf are 'Boring apertures'?? 😂
I haven't but I would love to try it! And I'm referring to not so large apertures like 2.8 and above which most of the GF lenses have. I find them boring because they don't produce much separation or bokeh which is the reason I chose the GFX systems larger sensor
@@taranspictures You’d love it - not at all like most of the other gf lenses which are, as you say, a bit boring
@2-wheelssolo815 everything I've seen about it have been great, apart from the price haha
So beautiful 📹🌸🎬
🤙
get the 85mm f 1.8 G lens, thank me later :) not the 1.4... not the D .... exactly that 85 1.8 g also nikon has some very intresting lenses, the 105 f2 and 135 f2 DC lenses that allow you bokha control.
All of those are way too tight for my liking, however if I get the opportunity I will try the 85 out, but personally I like the 28-50mm focal lengths
@@taranspictures put the 85 on the GFX. ;) it covers the sensor. now you have a pretty cool 55mm 1.2 lol
@@Juventinos it would be great if that was the case but 85 on the GFX is actually closer to a 70mm
If you want pictures and not video then maybe the D700 and the 24-70 f/2.8G
I'm not a big fan of DSLR cameras after using mirrorless for so long, I'm also not a big fan of zooms either
What poeple seem to gorget or are unaware of is that this guy Fuji, used to borrow Nikon D100 and D200 bodies to put their own sensor in them and sell them as S1 and S2, and even before this it was the FujiX DS-565 which was based on a Nikon . Sony's attempts at making digital cameras were a joke in the beginning. I should know as I have two of them. That was until Sony bought out Minolta and started to use their experience and expertise in camera manufacturing, even the mount was that of Minolta. Canon was the only one amongst these big Japanese manufcaturers which had its own designs besides Nikon and later Contax, although Contax was never as popular nor as reliable as the Nikon or even Canon Pro lines. It was also crazy expensive even for Pros. Nikon F4 defined the blue print for all the SLRs and DSLRs that came after it. I am not sure what Nikon is up to now these days, but as far as Pro line of cameras film or digital up until recent times, it was the camera to have.
I had no idea about any of that, thanks for the info!
@@taranspictures No worries mate. Photography was not invented the day that digital was born. We are all learning, even me after 55 years of being in this game.
Actually, it was Nikon's F5 that defined the body design of DSLRs, although the very early DSLRs were in fact F4 based. Weird looking beasts.
@@gottanikoncamera The shape of the future cameras were set by F5, but the whole idea of an effective autofocus in a pro body, provision of a motordriven pro camera without extra grip, auto load and rewind, advanced Matrix metering and Spot metering were all introduced with the F4. Even the position of the shutter release button on all the cameras since then was set by F4. Nikon still retained the dials as it was thought a step too far for the photographers of the time to remove them. I still have two F4s cameras and they are absolutely brilliant. Yes my F5 feels like a modern digital camera but the F4 is something else.
Nikon had a small crisis when they went mirrorless but now they are so back and their DLSR were always top notch
Yeah I remember hearing not great things about the early Nikon mirroless cameras
i don't think so. I think sony where very smart in how they marketed their cameras, making DSLR seem obsolete, which is bullshit. But it massively worked for them. Nikon and Canon work in 5 year plans, so from nikon's stand point they put out the best DSLR ever on the market, the D850 and were totally killing it, it would of made no sense to cannibalize the D850 and the F mount with a mirroless body and new lensmount . they put out the z9 on their own timeline, exactly like Canon did.
Interesting
Nikon are still king when it comes to photography. Chose an a6300 and 30mm f1.4 for my setup as I already had 2 Sony lenses, and it just made sense. It’s just about the right size for keeping the kit small enough to carry around in a small bag with my almost 3 month old, although I definitely plan on getting the 850 in the future myself as a dedicated stills camera. Having the option of 4k 30p and quick autofocus with a camera that I can easily pass to other family members and friends allows for much more freedom aswell. Just gutted it’s not a Nikon personally 😂
The d850 was lovely to use and it's clear that it's a photography first camera which was nice to experience
Nikon has always put photography first beautiful colours amazing camera bodies great lens but definite needs better designs
100%
That lens renders beautifully. I need one for my Nikon Df. Did you ever figure out what the lens was? People want to know! :-)
It's a yongnuo 50 1.8, it's like £35 and surprisingly good!
@ Wow, that was unexpected. The Chinese are churning out some pretty awesome rendering lenses these days! You took some killer portraits here.
@@gottanikoncamera This swirley Bukeh malarky that you people constantly go on about is nothing but residual spherical aberration. In simple word the lens is severely undercorrected. That Russian Helios 58mm M-44-2 is another example. That is why they are cheap.
@ Yep, got one of those. This one looks a fair bit sharper. I have three 50mm Nikkors, and having something with more character would be useful.
@@gottanikoncamera yeah I was shocked about the lens and thank you!
I'm so happy to see nikon and fuji putting pressure on canon and sony. New film cameras! The photography market is doing some crazy things.
More camera competition benefits everyone
You must be a millenial finding a 10 min video "super long" LOL :)
And you must not know that videos are edited down. So this was potentially a 30-40 minute recording edited down to fit best into the UA-cam algorithm
You also just completely ignored the writing where it said it wasn't super long 😂
I just recently found your videos here. they inspired me. thank you very much. Since last week I have owned a GFX50R and the Mitakon 65mm 1.4. Manual focusing works better than expected, but best with a evf magnifying and without focus peaking. I am thrilled with the results of the images and the decelerated experience of taking photos.
Thank you and I'm glad you're enjoying the set up!
Really lovely video😢❤

I loved this video so much. You spoke very eloquently and honestly about some tough emotions! I realised I take a lot of photos of my family especially my boys. One the reasons is I lost my dad very young too and se have very few photos of him. Even if it is with phone I try to capture the moment with my kids.
Thank you I appreciate it! Getting family photos has become so important to me now
Granny Barbie loved you so much Taz, so did your dad, grandad kenny and granimar. They'd all be so proud xx

I’m exactly the same about only being able to cry at the funeral
It's such a strange thing, it's the first time I experienced it
Do you think this is better than the new 80 1.6 mitakon?
I haven't tried it so I can't say. However I much prefer the 65mm focal length
Yup, I loved my GFX50R, but it was a burden. Sold it and got a Nikon Z8 instead and couldn't be happier.
After a few comments I started looking at the ZF and I think that's the one for me, how are you finding the Z8?
@@taranspictures Oh and Zf + Nikon 50mm 1.2 will give you close to that medium format look you're wanting ;)
Brother, you should really consider the Sirui Sniper lenses 1.2 (FF 1.8 look) for your XT4 and still keep your GFX. Just my opinion! ✌🏾
I have seen that before and it looks interesting, I do want to pick up some super fast lenses for the XT4 at some point
I would say that the Nikon ZF (or the Z6iii) might be a great option for you. Easy to adapt all kinds of lenses, great Voigtlander lenses and native z mount lenses. The af is very good, but the manual focus confrmation is really a game changer for me. The voigtlander 40mm f/1.2 is so good and easy to focus due to the options Nikon gives you. However, selling gear is always a difficult decision, good luck trying to find the answer for you! I will be following your journey!
Ever since it was released I've wanted a ZF but the money just hasn't been there, hopefully if my GFX sells for enough then I would be able to afford one, I'm not sure what lens I would get though
50R - 50mm Fooj 3.5 🧁, 65mm Mity. 45mm 2.8 contax zeiss 🥞. So much fun. Under $1000 for all 3 lenses used.
I've never seen the 45 2.8 for under £800
@ the Contax 45mm pancake? On eBay all day for $150-300 from Japan.
I ready that completely wrong haha I thought you meant the GF 45 2.8
@@taranspictures oh yeah, that’s a different story 😉
Otherwise you can adapt a Dji Lidar AF on your manual Mitakon 😁
I've never heard of that, how does it work?
So here's some tough love for you; 1) If you are struggling with the 2kg weight of a camera in a comfy evenly distributed weight backpack, for a 1-2hr walk, shoot time and return walk... rethink entirely wedding or event photography. You are woefully out of shape. Perhaps now you have a new found respect for event photographers? When I go out for a job I often wield an XH2S+adapter+Sigma 50-100/1.8 (a 1.5kg lens), and that is just one body, I then have another XH2S on the other side of me with the Sigma 18-35, and it doesn't stop there. I then need longer lenses, wider lenses stored on my person, including speedlites, filters etc! And that weight can be on my all day. Harnesses can help, but they are not some holy grail. I think some newcomers comes into this thinking 2x XT4's + small primes and done, but that is a pretty naive outlook, you learn pretty quick with the requirements of the day that the reality is you'll need more items on your person or you're doing a subpar job. 2) You're right about G Mount lenses being boring. Your route of the GFX+Mikaton is not flawed, and you're right, it is a one trick pony. But I think you might be a little wrong or confusing the necessity of fast aperture with that medium format 67 look. When I owned the Pentax 645D, the fastest glass I could get was f2.8, yet these images popped far more than what I see with any fast G Mount native glass. FA 45/2.8, DFA55/2.8, DFA75/2.8, all capable of providing plenty medium format vibes with AF to boot. One of the biggest reasons I hold off from GFX is exactly as you say, boring clinical glass, good for landscape, soul sucking for portraiture. Too much $$ for a specific look which also required manual focusing. 3) To just carry on from the above aperture thing... I own one of the fastest (if not thee fastest) consumer lenses, the Kipon IBELUX 40mm/0.85 (manual focus). This on my XH2S gives an equivalent DoF to a 60/1.2. It's a great piece of glass but it can only sometimes replicate a medium format look, for things like full body shots... nah... not even close to looking right. Tighter headshots and half body it does not too bad in. So this just further cements that you should not do the equivalence thing too much, its not that important to a 'look'. The reason the GFX and mikaton do so well is more to do with the large sensor and less to do with the aperture but rather Mikaton did not make a clinical and boring lens. 4) And just to further follow on, there are some great blogs and video out there showing the Sony 50/1.2 G Master replicating the 67+105/2.4 look, which is impressive indeed considering the former is a pretty clinically revolving glass. Sometimes the editing of the files has a lot more say in the pop and look than people give credit. I think honestly this route is probably the solution (seeing as the combo of lighter lens and body + superb AF solves the main issues) , you just need to git gud with it to making it spin that look. Research into it. 5) Manual focusing can get in the way, but again this rapport building stuff is handled best by extroverts. Technical photography can be learned, trying to suppress your introvert side and become a positive energy extrovert that helps combat awkward silences... that is the hard stuff. Being a professional photography has so much to do with physical fitness and personality than people realise. When I go to work I become an entirely different person, I'm PAID to become a different person and gym memberships are a necessary requirement to helping do that job. Dump all excess (body) weight, it helps you and the client. Like I said, tough love, I still struggle with aspects I outlines above, they are not meant to be a target at you, its a target for anyone thinking about this as a career. Now if you said you wanted to be a studio product photographer... well then... everything changes and many things I mentioned are not applicable at all!
I agree with a lot of the things you say and don't worry I don't take any offence, I'm definitely not in the greatest shape but it also doesn't help that I don't actually have a photography back pack, it also had multiple other things in it whenever I was doing my shoots for the project such as a large 2 litre bottle of water, packed lunch and then an extra camera and other lenses when I needed them, so it was more on the realm of 15kg+ at the heaviest. I'm more on about the 2kg+ weight of my set up around my neck on an incredibly unbalanced set up
@@taranspictures Urgh... bags... don't even get me started on that! I have like $1k worth of bags for different stuff. This money pit never ends! 🤣
I've recently fallen in the trap of camera bags haha, I can never afford them but I can still admire them!
The Canon-R-system has the biggest and heaviest lenses of all full frame mirrorless systems. Even if you want to use it with the ef-adapter, it still a bigger volume. Even the GF-lenses are lighter most of the time. I didn´t sell my GFX 50s because the price dropped shortly after I bought it used for a (I thought) reasonable price. Now I´m glad i still have it. I shoot with my slightly manipulated Minolta lenses. Works out great.
Like I said in the video I don't want to go near the GF lenses due to price and lack of interest. I've also used a few R cameras with their lenses and they haven't been anywhere near as heavy as my GFX set up, my main issue is the lack of autofocus with my lenses
@taranspictures i see. At one point you mentioned the lack of variety and guessed the idea is to go for other canon glass beside the 50mm.
That too, I would go for a 35mm and maybe a 28mm but that would be it
Adapt the EF 50mm f/1.2 on your GFX first, see how the AF perfoms and what it looks like on the whole MF sensor ( think the Sigma Art 1.4 are a better choice btw ) Then crop the images to a FF size and compare, should give you an idea on what you ll get.
The AF would be unusable on the GFX with that lens, it already struggles on Canon DSLR's, however, using the EF to R adapter on the R it improves the autofocus ten fold. I've used the older EF 50 1.4 on and Eos R and the autofocus was great, but any time I used it on a DSLR it was mediocre
But I am also thinking about the sigma 50 1.4, the price difference between the 1.4 and the 1.2 really isn't that much here, I think it's like £50 so I'm not sure what I would get
Same proble here.. and I shot weddings on the 50S II..! Stressful system! Takes creativity of because of the focus system and f. aids. It feels like an addictive trap. All what you mentioned is so true!
That must be so tense! Glad to know that I'm not alone thinking like this
Dude Omar Gonzalez gave you a shout out in his latest video! ua-cam.com/video/XsZm2NFFeZE/v-deo.html
no singular camera will be the perfect camera. part of the fun in being a photographer is to find the flaws and try to work out solutions and methods for the image desired
Agreed but my mind says the solution to get the desired image is the equivalent focal length and aperture on a smaller system with autofocus
@@taranspictures With that mindset, it would mean everyone should get the latest flagship cameras. All cameras will have their strengths/weaknesses. I personally can't afford a mindset of buying/trading/selling the gear. I rather spend that time taking more photos/videos or work more hours to afford the gear I want.
Well not really since I wouldn't be getting a new flagship camera or lens, I would be getting an almost 6, year old camera and 17+ year old lens. I'm not trying to get the best of the best, I'm trying to get the look that I already get but in a smaller more efficient package
@taranspictures totally aware of your upgrade mention in the video. I still use lenses older than myself because the look is subjectively pleasing so I'm always researching vintage glass. Only have 2 emount lenses myself for videos. I hope you'll find the look you desire.
For almost 15 years, I keep changing from Micro 4/3 cameras, to FF cameras (with APSC cameras in the middle). Olympus -> Fuji -> Sony -> Panasonic -> Fuji -> Nikon... And I always keep saying the one I have is the right one. One thing is certain, I will never ever go MF again (I've had Film Medium format cameras in the past). Those are way too big. Now, I own the Nikon ZF, mostly couples with a tiny pergear 35mm f1.4. But I can't say I'll keep it. And I love that combo, eventhough that pergear isn't really good, it has some caracter.
Id love to try the ZF
It's just entirely too large for what it brings to the table. The Mamiya 80mm f/1.9 is a better bet. Also f/1.4 is a bear on medium format, in terms of getting those eyeballs on the same focal plane, you'll be stopped down to at least f/2 to have half a chance.
I've managed to get the eyes in focus while shooting at 1.4 in many of my photos. 80mm is too tight for my liking
People will commission you for your style, so own it and own the process of making those images. If you sell up and get a regular camera with faster AF and a lighter packay you'll end up taking the types of pictures everyone else takes. Just slow it down, own the process and be more intentional. Also be mindful of objects or the horizon line going through the back of people's heads in your composition.
The set up that I was thinking of would allow for the same style in a smaller package with the benefit of autofocus
@@taranspictures Yah I know that, but the way we interact with a camera changes the decisions we make. I have a hassy x1dii and have the same issues, I work with it like a 5x4 camera, Slow, with a cable release and a tripod. It means I get the time to work around my subject and not be hidden behind a camera, which changes their body language. I get a different response from them and it makes a different image. The slowness of these systems is the positive, not the negative. I'd hate for you to miss out on what it brings because of FOMO or GAS. You're right on the cusp of mastering it. Lean in to the issue and use it as a creative boundary. If you're going to get new gear, you could get something that will allow you to explore a new style, like a rangefinder?
@@steve8547 it isnt FOMO or GAS, im not thinking that I will create better work with another camera or I feel like I need to change my set up for any other reason than ive stopped using it because of these negatives that ive experienced. Like I mentioned in the video I am still not sure what to do. I have already used a few different range finders and a bunch of other different cameras/styles of shooting and the GFX has been the best match for me that I have found but the weight, difficulty focusing and lack of lenses that suit my still are putting me off:(
@@taranspictures Well, I'm sayin' that 'negative' is a positive, and your work is good and if you lean into the things you think suck, and use them, I think your work will get even better. Your visual style is derived from photographers who use large format, so don't sweat about the weight or speed, because you have heaps more than the people who came before you. I'm betting if you slow down your process, you'll find new creative possibilities and get even better.
You might be right and you may be swaying my thoughts over to keeping the GFX, also you are spot on with my style being derived from large format haha
Can I make one suggestion? Is you absolutely save your arse off and get the 63 mm 2.8 or the 45 mm 2.8 auto focus both of those lenses you could do a lot of work with in the professional space no problems at all, even with the current camera you have people don't mind waiting a little bit longer for the shot. If you nail the shot I have found that it is the industry saying to us we have to rush all the time, not the camera itself.
I think they are boring lenses, I've used them both before and while they have top tier sharpness and image quality, I wouldn't be able to create images in the style that I want
@taranspictures hmmmm You're pretty limitless with the files
I cant create the look that I want in post production
If I was to make one suggestion mate, why don't you upgrade to the Mark two which has ibis it will make low light Photography a lot easier and a lot less challenging. I disagree with you on the GFX lens has been boring. It is down to how you shoot and the type of lighting that you use. I am a GFX professional in Australia and when I say that I shoot professionally part time with two GFX cameras and an XT5 and they are very different systems. I have to admit and it can get a bit tiresome some lugging gear around. 100S II that's the camera I own now and that is amazing. It is very close to a full frame camera in terms of auto focus. It's incredibly fast for a medium format camera. No it's not as fast as some of the other cameras in the full frame lineup. it's not a Sony or a Nikon but it can definitely shoot wedding portraits pretty much anything in fact I've shot birds and sports as well.
I can't afford an upgrade like that unfortunately. With the way that I shoot (shallow dof to get that 3D pop) the GFX lenses don't allow for that apart from the 110 f2, which I find too tight, the 80 f1.7, which I also find too tight and the 55 1.7 which is too expensive.
@taranspictures Yeah , I have the 55 1.7... It is brilliant
I would love to try one out at some point
You kind of already figured it out, but my best advice for portrait photographers is: don't get too caught in the shallow depth of field thing. If you need a 1cm DOF to make your subject stand out, you must be doing something wrong. A shallow DOF is the laziest technique in portraiture to put emphasis on the subject, is like the voiceover in cinema. It surely is impressive at first, but it's a look that gets old REALLY fast. As you said, you had many photos that looked like copies of each other. That's precisely the issue with a very shallow DOF, if everything else other than the subject gets fully blurred then all you have left is your subject floating over a blank background. Also, IMO the smoothness of the bokeh is more important than how out of focus it is if you want to isolate the subject. In other words, a 2.8 with very smooth bokeh is more pleasing than a 1.4 with a busy bokeh
I 100% agree but I'm not shooting at a large aperture to get everything out of focus, I'm shooting to get that 3D pop in my images which is much easier with a shallow dof. Many of my photos that I've used with this set up have been shot stopped down and I do take photos in other ways than the shallow depth of field look but since that's what I use my GFX for, those tend to be my favourite images
