The Simple and the Essential: Heidegger in Modernity II
In this episode, I continue discussing some key insights from Günter Figal's lecture series "Heidegger in Modernity" given at the University of Freiburg. Again, the themes of reduction, the simple, and the essential are stressed, including Heidegger's conception of philosophy as a type of wakefulness. NOTE: I had to repost the video because the initial version missed a chunk of the episode due to a processing error.

The Simple and the Essential: Heidegger in Modernity (via Figal)
Переглядів 4212 роки тому
A couple of years, I came across Günter Figal's lecture series "Heidegger in Modernity" given at the University of Freiburg. In this episode, I begin unpacking some of the insights I have gleaned from them, focusing in particular on the essentializing motif in Heidegger, i.e., the stress on the simple and the essential. As in other instances, my take on Figal's take on Heidegger is refracted th...

Mental Fortitude: A Response to Oliver Glanz
Переглядів 2503 роки тому
After I posted my last video on mental fortitude, Oliver Glanz, a friend and colleague of mine, raised some important questions in the comments section. He gave me some pause for thought, and so I decided to address his contention that acquiring grit is a result of life experiences - an osmosis model of self-formation, as it were - rather than some "methodology." In addition, in the LIFE UPDATE...

If we don’t talk we don’t understand each other. And when we don’t know what’s up we can’t treat us right. And the longer it goes it’s going on. It’s usual trying to overcome this. And to reach a point it feels senseless when there is no change in months and also getting quiet. When you feel hurted and wrong treated immediately and wanna go to war imagine how it must feel having this for month and how frustrating it is getting blamed not to care, being heartless and just playing selfish games. What should be joyfully on this? If you want them closer communicate. Got many try’s in months. If you don’t want them arround let them go. Also this Situation Happend a couple of times. They are not playing tricks on you to give you pain again and again. They giving you new tries. Because you pleased them to stay and how much they mean to you. To say they don’t love you and being responsible for everything went wrong is not fair. They tried to come close, to go away and being just arround and not come closer or to leave. Just being there and not getting in situations that stresses.Nothing was right. But still they offer being there if you decide to move. They will not please you because that proofed has no influence and only brings anger. And if you don’t want to come closer they also don’t stress and accept it. You can decide what you want alone and finally. What’s evil in that? You have freedom of choice. People you don’t wanna talk stay away. And those you like will be there. No war or bad habits, just clearing situation after a long time. And to clear a situation that feels uncomfortable and brings stress and anger is not evil or against you. You

Thank you! I am looking forward to the next episode! I think one reason for why the building of mental fortitude appears difficult or is by some perceived as illusionary has to do with the fact that it is perceived as a means to or at least essential ingredient for building a well formed character. Because there is this apparent causal relationship (mental toughness builds character) we are inclined to envision the relationship as methodological. This, however, is the problem - I think. Apparent causalities cannot always be translated into methodologies (this is sometimes also true for scholarship and other realms of life). I would claim, that for most of us, the development of mental toughness did not take place in a conscious way, nor did we have character building in mind. Rather, it was a side-effect of playing soccer, climbing a mountain top, playing ice hockey, preparing for tough exams in school, orienteering runs, playing in an orchestra, skiing, having to finish ones plate at dinner, preparing for going to church early in the morning, etc. In all this we got lost, consumed, mesmerized, or ritualized by the thing we were doing. We were not aware of the pain and discipline we forced upon us in order to pursue what we aimed at. I remember, for example, that as a little team of pathfinders (ca. 14/15 years old) we were running 30+km non-stop during an orienteering run, crossing creeks, climbing trees, etc. just for the sake of competing with others. Only in the end we realized how much suffering we went through. Or as part of our churches annual night hikes we kids loved to be dropped in unknown villages about 20km away from the church in the dark night, with just a bottle of water, a head lamp, and a map in our hands. Running back to church over mountains, fields, forests. And when we arrived we did not even think about the fact that we had mentally and physically suffered, were sometimes dehydrated during the activity, etc... The only thing we had in mind: "Yes, we did it!". The same applies to making music, memorizing poems, etc. If you focus on building mental toughness it is likely you won't develop it. Some things you cannot get by trying to get them. Methodology is usually not a straight path that follows along the line of causalities. The quality of a good pedagogue is that she realizes this. She knows that the path to the good life is usually disguised... This is an essential truth about the beauty and meaning of life.

This is an excellent comment, I largely agree with you. I would only say that for many people the experiences they went through, including various processes of socialization, had precisely the opposite effect. For instance, they might have been bullied, called names by their parents, told that they would amount to nothing, succumbed to various addictions, and so on. The lack of self-worth induced such matters is a like cesspool of bad energy, including the lack of ability to see themselves succeed in anything. So any attempts at amelioration such as therapy, to the extent that they are successful, will have a ripple impact on resilience, indirect as such approaches might be. In any case, I will address your point in my future episode. Thanks so much for chiming in!

@@thecraftofliving Oh, yes. I see the reality you are pointing at. And yes, you are right. It is the mental environment that you are put in through personalities and characters who make you feel secure, loved, accepted, and believed in that switches the experience of demanding situations (mental and physical) into blessings rather than in to curses. Only later on you become aware that this switching is only made possible through a life confirming mindset. Looking forward to your next episode, Ante!

Possibly my favorite episode yet. Listened to it on Spotify. Nietzsche's observation of truth as an interrupter to our preferred illusions is painfully accurate. I am encouraged by one author who observes followers of Jesus intellectually and spiritually "settling into the truth." In other words, followers of Jesus allow truth to shatter their illusions and lies of preference, and then choose to follow the way of truth. Thanks for the episode!

Excellent. Thank you! To me Nietzsche's critique has also a beautiful side. If one is willing one can see him call for a humanity that wills a truly humane truth. It has allowed me to think out of the box, not as a rebellious mind, but a serving mind that explores the culture creating possibilities within the domain of created reality. To me Nietzsche's can restore the intended braveity and courage that YHWH calls out Adam to have as he is called to rule the earth as a caretaker.

I think that the pleasure principle is the 1st dimension (analaogy: line), then self-concept is 2nd dimension (analogy: plane), and spiritual worldview is the 3rd dimension (3D). And it is very difficult to change within one dimension working from inside of it, but changes become easy when working from the higher dimension: sensation <-- (modified by) mental <--- (modified by) spiritual.

I think at least an element of the art of living is found in a improvised version of "The Game" that Queen performed live at The Bowl in '82, with Freddie Mercury singing, "Play it the way you like it." One thing I've (re) discoreved in my own life is if I can play the game of life the way I like it, I'd rather be out in nature photographing wildlife, instead of hiding between four walls behind my computer, as I am, ironically, doing right now.
