    Just started reading this. While there's some eye rolling Gen-X "literary masculinity" that permeates the book, it's enjoyable. Reminds me of the interactive books I had growing up. Realized there was definitely nods to concrete poetry, and had wondered if anyone had made this connection. Liked the review.

    seeing this late tonight, I was transported again to the shores of the Island of Sherdstube, that unique place where story and place and haunting music come together in a most beautifully dissociative way. There is no other place online that truly allows what philosopher Byung-chul Han would call the art of lingering to be practised. Thank you again Sam.

    "She destroyed the city of San Francisco, it’s - and I own a big building there - it’s no - I shouldn’t talk about this but that’s OK I don’t give a damn because this is what I’m doing. I should say it’s the finest city in the world - sell and get the hell out of there, right? But I can’t do that. I don’t care, you know? I lost billions of dollars, billions of dollars. You know, somebody said, ‘What do you think you lost?’ I said, ‘Probably two, three billion. That’s OK, I don’t care.’ They say, ‘You think you’d do it again?’ And that’s the least of it. Nobody. They always say, I don’t know if you know. Lincoln was horribly treated. Uh, Jefferson was pretty horribly. Andrew Jackson they say was the worst of all, that he was treated worse than any other president. I said, ‘Do that study again, because I think there’s nobody close to Trump.’ I even got shot! And who the hell knows where that came from, right?"

    Just this morning, I was thinking it seemed time for a new sherd to drop! I've been drawn to Japanese women writers over the past few years, and Mieko Kawakami has become one of my favorite writers. I highly recommend her powerful novella Heaven. Been meaning to read Izumi Suzuki for a while now. Excited to check out the authors you mentioned. I wonder if you've read or are familiar with the novel Out by Natsuo Kirino. It is a feminist noir crime/horror novel that goes about as dark as a novel can go. Unlike any other story I've encountered. Really one to check out when you're in the mood for a twisted, intense Japanese crime novel. Thanks for these meditations!

    • @SherdsTube
      @SherdsTube Місяць тому

      I actually picked up 'Heaven', too, and almost covered it in this video, but changed my mind at the last moment. Of the five, Fumiko Enchi was probably my favourite. I can't wait to read more of her work. I know of 'Out', but I haven't read it yet, I'm afraid. Speaking of crime novels, I also picked up the two 'Lady Joker' books by Kaoru Takamura. Have you come across those, by any chance? Really glad you enjoyed the video! :)

    • @philstrand
      @philstrand Місяць тому

      @@SherdsTube I've not come across the Lady Joker novels by Takamura. Working as a bookseller, I've just had them put on order to add to the store shelves and am eager to check them out. I've been amassing Japanese crime novels by Masaka Togawa, Yukito Ayatsuji, Soji Shimada, and Seishi Yokomizo for my personal collection. I sense a crime spree in my future...that being of the Japanese fictional variety, just to be clear.

    Might just’ve been reading a bit too much Ligotti, mate. Just kidding. I feel this too, definitely. I still hit books all the time that I absolutely love, and which open my skull up and eggbeat my brains deliciously. (Been bingeing PKD this summer, and a few others-Nevil Shute’s ‘On the Beach,’ Robert L. Forward’s ’Dragon’s Egg,’ Evelyn Piper’s ’Bunny Lake is Missing,’ etc.) Honestly, when I need a transformative literary experience, I turn to Alan Moore. Swamp Thing, V for Vendetta, Voice of the Fire, Jerusalem…his prose is intricate, elegant, eloquent, lush and luxuriant, rhythmic to the point nearly of independent life sometimes, pulsing in the mind. Big fan of this channel, and what you’re doing. Great work, guy.

    Eploring connections between the aesthetics of Thomas Ligotti's Teatro Grottesco (2006) and those of the Polish avant-garde as well as mid-20th-century European theater. ??? No No No!!!! You missed the fact that Thomas Ligotti's home towen is Detroit Michigan which in 2000 was totally Carnage I use to Hobo ride Freight Trains in 1990.s and 2000.s often Got Off the Boxcarrs to get Free Food in Homeless Shelters in Detroit and Detroit WAS MURDER CITY every body call Detroit MURDER TOWN, so the Polish avant-garde is NOT his model, Detroit Michigan was his Model and Hometown.

    I discovered your work the other day when I found your video on convolution. Ah, a man after my heart! Such a pleasure to hear about the love of books and reading in this day and age. I've discovered a dozen or more books and writers that I've never heard of from your podcasts. You do ask for recommendations, and knowing that you have read only a limited amount of French authors, I'm wondering if you've ever read Mallarmé? He's been my Northstar for the past 5 plus years. His oeuvre is relatively compact, but every poem is a gem, difficult , and convoluted (in the way you suggest). I have about a half dozen books of his poetry because each translation is so different, it's almost like a different poem. The joke about Mallarmé during his lifetime was that he needed to translate his poems into French. In any even, I would appreciate your take on Mallarmé.
