(digital restoration) Tchaikovsky Symphony No.5 - Mravinsky, Leningrad 1973
Today, May 7th, the day on which this video is published, is Tchaikovsky's 184th birthday.
This was one of my earliest restoration attempts on any recording ever and i can say it was the most challenging one since the original footage was probably recorded with some 1960s 35mm camera.
That being said, this particular performance of the legendary partnership: Mravinsky & Leningrad Phil, is widely considered as the best recording of Chai 5th ever existed.
We have seen some other notable recordings such as Karajan, Celi, Abbado, but Mravinsky's version just does not compare to those.
His performance didn't give the impression of mere victory, but rather a feeling of loneliness, which is the typical of Tchaikovsky. It was almost like the composer himself did the conducting.
Mravinsky's eyes were really sharp. It was said that during the rehearsal, one of the violinist made a small mistake in bowing, and he was given a personal warning after the rehearsal. That would probably explain why it turned out to be such a well-coordinated performance.
He was such a perfectionist that after a concert, he would often lament to his wife, "Today's performance was a failure.'' However, in this video, he looks relieved by the end of the piece.
In my opinion no other performance has surpassed this divine performance in the past 50 years and probably in the next 50.
Work title: Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64

Orchestra: Leningrad Philharmonic

(remastered) Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 - Claudio Arrau/Alceo Galliera 1955

Probably my favorite interpretation of the 4th concerto just because Arrau played it with ultimate clarity, including that diminuendo on 3rd movement's theme exposition (exactly on 25:03 and repeated at 27:35). Think its the first time i've heard it being played that way. *chef's kiss (00:00) I. Allegro moderato (19:11) II. Andante con moto (24:49) III. Rondo (Vivace) Author's note: WMG owns th...

Premiering my first ever attempt on restoring Furtwängler's work in commemorating the maestro's 70th death-day. A timeless performance featuring Edwin Fischer, a pupil of Martin Krause who was a pupil of Franz Liszt who was a pupil of Czerny who was a student of Beethoven himself. Fischer's crystalline clarity and rhythmic precision combined with full Romantic dynamic fireworks result in a brea...

Based on my observation, Brahm's 3rd symphony has been on the top five of multiple classical music community's favorite and most highly recommended works, alongside Beethoven's 9th and Brahm's 4th. The piece contains one of my most favorite opening passages in the genre and of course the people's favorite: the famous allegretto. This recording of Walter with Columbia SO was my original introduc...

Part of my older restoration works to Erich's Beethoven 50s cycle. After 70 years, Erich Kleiber's Eroica has not been surpassed and rarely equalled, with Pierre Monteux's as the closest one. That 3rd movement, along with Toscanini's version, are just the best. The story is told that Maestro Kleiber was found in his office crying with emotion after this performance. (00:00) I. This is probably the closest we've ever get to hear and see the perfect Fifth that is very reminiscent of Carlos Kleiber's century's recording 15 years prior. Sir Georg Solti is known to have researched the metronome setting in Beethoven's days and this is what we get to see as the result. CSO have had their many different leadership over the years but in my opinion Solti's era was their all-ti...

I have listened to hundreds of Emperor concerti performed by dozens of different pianists around the world and i was convinced that Pollini/Bohm's version was the best. It arguably still is, but listening to Michelangeli/Celibidache gave me a whole new perspective. With a very similar runtime, both renditions delivered an equally transcendental performance, each with its own characteristic. Pol...

It was June the 18th of 2022, the world, myself included, was shocked by a masterful, jaw-dropping Rach 3 performance by the 18-yo Yunchan Lim during Cliburn 2022 Final Stage. Seriously, look that up. But that was also the instant moment i decided to remaster another monumental performance of the same work, pulled off by the legend himself almost a half century earlier, Horowitz, with the stell...

(EXTREMELY RARE) This absolutely monumental, captivating, emotionally and rationally balanced recording of concerto no.2 was never issued for public release. Rumor has it, the recording was once listed under an Italian label, EMI, coded CDC 4 79349 2, but no one was really able to prove it's existence. I was super-lucky to stumble upon a pre-recorded TV broadcast at some decades-old internet ar...

A friend of mine introduced me to this recording and to be honest, i wasn't sold until i heard it myself through a lossless digital copy. Martha to me remains as the greatest living virtuoso today and listening to her stage performance paired with Maestro Abbado just further proves my point. This is a great alternative (if not better) to Barenboim/Celibidache's interpretation, mainly due to the iconic Martha tempi and Abbado's otherworldly sound-companion. (00:00) I. Part of my older restoration works to Erich's Beethoven 50s cycle. People tend to compare Erich's rendition of the 7th to Carlos's, his son, about 30 years later. To me, those two are quite different. Erich's is extremely rigorous, with an exceptional technicality that sublimates the subtleties of the score, which are the charm of this symphony. true and ironically many people questioned his choice of tempo while failing to realize that this in the end of the day is an "allegretto", a slightly slower version of allegro.

I used to love listing to the recording of this very concert (Horowitz's Golden Jubilee) on cassette when I was in college in the late 1970's. Hearing this remastered recording and seeing it, with Horowitz's playing and Mehta's conducting, brought back all those thrills and more four and a half decades later - two world class masters at the top of their game. The audience's reaction was immediate and Mehta's look to Horowitz at the end says it all - it was a performance for the ages.

I definitely agree with you. Even today almost 50 years later, this performance remain unsurpassed. Lim's grand final attempt in cliburn was considered by many to be the new GOAT but to me, none has ever beaten Horowitz's unique touch on Rach 3rd.

Now i can comment little more. I love this performance more than others because it’s just pure pure energy and he is doing it as it is. Not giving his personal habits of personality, traumas like some do, manner like brillant Arturro Benedetti M… I love other players, but this one performance of this concerto gave me so much joy maybe because it’s played with such an universal force. It doesn’t go any direction like Zimerman or others (which I admire and love always, never against). Still… I’m musician for whole my life. I left this concerto to listen when I’ll be more mature, so I postponed it and postponed (even if my favourite violin concerto is actually Brahms violin concerto). So the time came! I listen to it. I learn it, but not maybe understanding it by structure, mind way. Just listen and let it sink into me inside. And it give all it possibly can back. I’m fulfilled with its quality. The music is just mature, developed in all ways, deep, deeper even than deep. Wisdom of experience when I listen to Brahms always. And honesty… that pure, naked human touch he has. Thanks a lot to mr Sokolov. Pure joy to be part of this great phenomena which is experience of music here and now

A funny thing: the orchestra played really great throughout the concert, it's a great orchestra but, from 41:42 onwards, they start to get a bit imprecise. Horowitz, perhaps because he was confused by the orchestra, perhaps because he was 76 years old, at 41:45 completely misses a beat and enters very late. Metha notices this, breaks out in a cold sweat, but carries on and Horowitz manages to catch up and finish together with the orchestra.

    • @henridenafel
      @henridenafel 7 місяців тому

I'm super glad that someone noticed it! Not only he missed it, but also in that split-second moment (if im hearing it correctly) when he realized he was late to pick up, he decided to skip the first 2 notes. This may seem small, but it actually helped a lot during the catch up. A split-second decision making made by a 76 years old to mitigate the error. Thats decades of muscle memory at full display right there. :)
