Although reading can help improve your writing skills, Id argue boredom is the best fuel for creativity
Another tip that really helped me is to watch very well written shows like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones (seasons 1-4). When you watch their opening scenes note what hooked you and what thoughts you'd imagine is going through the characters's heads and what motivates them. Then, watch the characters titural moments that parallel to that opening scene and implement that into your own writing. Perfect example, when we're introduced to Ned Stark he is the man passing the sentence and his story ends with someone doing the same with his own sword. We are told Ned does his actions because he's honorable but is conflicted between duty to his House and his King. As a result, he dies to showcase how honor doesn't survive in that world. It both reveals his internal conflict while connecting it to the main story
Could You Make One For Sam Mendes And Wes Anderson
That's the only advice that you need. Write and read. Everything else is a crap.
I love that they show a clip from Seinfeld over such dramatic music! 😂😂
This man is such a inspiration to me I wanted to write horror books because of Stephen King 🥹🧡🫶🏽
Dude what is the intense, suspenseful music about?? 😳
Deny it all you want, but it’s true. Whenever I come across a badly written book, I can tell the writer didn’t read enough.
$64k I don’t agree that Carrie was enough for king to quit ✍️
"You have to look, you have to see... you can't just walk and let it all go by" - Stephen King
<3
I want to LIKE the video for King's knowledge but I don't want to help or encourage this UA-camr. The MUSIC IS TOO D@MN LOUD!
Holy shit, the background music is so distracting!! Who the hell thought that was a good idea?
good video. music too loud, tho.
I want to watch this every day
Two things I’ve wondered about True Romance: Why wasn’t Chris Walken in anymore scenes, and what would the soundtrack and score have been if Tarantino directed??
Disney writers should be required to watch this video.
Forget the music. listen to him. Good ol Mainer.
Yes too many of these kinds of videos use music when it isn't needed the subject matter is enough
Awesome video. Thanks for making this ❤
and sum ❄️
He's been clean for at least 35 years
Fewer. Not less...fewer.
Her*
This guy😂😂😂😂
What's with the annoying music overriding the dialogue to the point we can not clearly hear what is being said. What is more important what you are saying or the music B.G.? Music should be so low that what is said is at least two thirds less than the volume of the voice, NOT fighting for first place as you have done. You may know something about dialogue, but not basic editing. Lose the music, it is not needed.
My brother’s , teachers, professors ! ❤❤❤
What, you couldn’t make the music any louder?!
In short; If you want to do something for a living, you have to, you know, do it.
Put down the phone and the tablets and pick up an actual book and read it.
Very annoying that there is someone talking all the time behind the music
Isn't it mister blonde who says the second line at the beginning? It was Michael Madsen right?
I dig the overpowering ambient music.
This goes for game development. want to make good games? play alot of games.
This was put together three years ago, so I will assume that it is clear to everyone in post to watch those little light thingies on the mixing board have purpose other than being an amusing thing to look at as your fry on 'shrooms. It's just like King had figured out--some years ago, judging by his appearance in the video--that he was lecturing us about reading and if we didn't read enough we were going to be unpitiable losers. I've made peace with Stephen King shouting in my ear metaphorically. I've told him I won't judge the lack of an objective editor to tighten down his writing because he is too arrogant to believe he could use one, if he doesn't tell me how to be a writer. That's my arrogance to believe he wouldn't, a few pages into my manuscript, toss it in the fire and not let Tabatha rescue it. Now, agreed, we are left with all of this horrible "mood music" and trying to hear King's words. Suggestions to those that turned this off because the music annoys you: seriously, how serious could you have been about following this. May I suggest? Turn on the closed captions and turn the sound down or off. See? That's technology, tamed.
The 1st 40 secs of this video explains why there's less talented artists nowadays. No one is ever bored enough to stumble across their true talents.
That was very insightful, thank you. I think that the soundtrack (or lack thereof) is also an intrinsic element of QT’s films; pure synergy.
That artificial "Film" artifact is silly. I just watched BRATS about the Brat Pack and that Documentary did the exact same thing and terribly distracting...
Used to be a big fan of his and owned everything he's ever written. But then he opened his mouth about politics and showed his true colors. So I burned every single one of his books. Will never read or watch anything based on his books again.
This was the least informative video ever.
Music bleurgh.
If you want all your characters to sound the same, quipping off one another in the most inorganic way - Sorkin's writing methods are definitely for you.
Eh, everyone has different advice for writers. Do whatever the fuck works for you, only listen to this if it helps
Every serious writer out there, say the same thing, you must read a lot, I don't get, what you disagree with?
@@hectormanuel9793 I have no idea. I think I wrote this comment because at the time I was struggling to find the time to read or write and I took the advice to be saying I would never be a good enough writer, so I got mad at it. But yeah this is probably the most universal advice out there, my comment applies to most writing advice but not really this
This is very Inspirational. I hope to some day have my own movies!
You're wrong that the conversations have nothing to do with the characters.
Always worth listening to a guy who has been there, done that. The music doesn't matter. Personal stories help to get in his head, as much as one can.
We don't need the music
I can't believe you didn't say "if you execute every motherfucking last one of these things correctly"
Like so many others have said, the music is oh so irritating! Get it off the video
This was so well made, it literally made me cry. I'm watching this Steven Spielberg documentary/life's work overview today for the first time, at a point in my life when, after 10 years of trying to make it in Hollywood as a director and 20 years of filmmaking experience, I gave up and moved to Seattle, WA to pursue a music career. I was unable to break into Hollywood as a director or actor, so I've been living in Seattle for 2 years. Yesterday, I got a call from a casting director to act in a movie shooting in Washington, and I also received a call from an Assistant Director and Producer in LA who may want to finance my next feature film. For so many years, I tried to achieve my dreams, but it just wasn't possible for me. Hearing Steven talk about all the years of practice he had before being hired to direct his first film really hit my heart. Like Steven, I've been practicing my craft of filmmaking for so long (20 years), and I am now reinspired to pursue this dream again with new life. I died to my dream and have been born again as a new director, actor, screenwriter, producer, and music artist.
He talks more about his life and experiences rather than give any useful advice. No disrespect, but this is not helpful at all for someone how wants to start writing.
