Pacific nations drowning in debt: Can debt and disaster coexist?
A new report from Caritas Oceania, Caritas Australia and Jubilee Australia Research Centre, has revealed the total annual finance needs for Pacific nations facing climate mitigation, adaptation and loss and damage costs could conservatively sit at around USD$1.5bn.
Meanwhile, estimates of climate financing delivered annually between 2015 and 2020 sit at $0.2-0.6bn, pointing to an annual financing gap in the region of $1bn.
The estimates appear in Weathering the Storm which examines tensions between debt and climate challenges in the Pacific, coinciding with COP29 which is currently underway in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The report was launched at an event in Baku alongside Tuvalu’s Minister for Climate Change and a policy analyst from the Pacific Island Climate Action Network.
Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand Spokesperson Tony Sutorius joined Pacific Mornings to discuss a new report highlighting the grim reality. Check out the full story at PMN pmn.co.nz/read/pacific-region/pacific-islands-drowning-in-debt-church-demands-relief

    Without Prejudice. The Problem with the FANS is the Timing of it and How the TNRL dealt with the issues.

    • @Reformed1-e1c
      @Reformed1-e1c 12 годин тому

      I disagree. The timing is not the issue. It is how people reacted. The timing was beyond TNRL's control. The new board took affect in 2018 and were given the task to audit on TNRL's finances prior to 2018. They had to provide this report to the IRL and their external partners. But the revelation of funds unaccounted hit a nerve that people like Hopoate started to speak out a false narrative.

    • @Richard-z8z
      @Richard-z8z 7 годин тому

      @Reformed1-e1c Yes Your timing to come in 2018 and made that Accusations against the Original or Last Board Members and as a result replacing them. The FAN got upset and Rightly so Entitled to that because MMT had made a Name for Themselves but most of All their Country Kingdom of TONGA. You brought up the Money issues to Justify your Unprofessional Interference. You try to shift the Limelight from Players and the People the FAN the Country to your pathetic Nu Board n members. Did the Players made a Formal Complaint.No. Did the Coach Complain .No. Why didn't they stay with you then. That's Explain a lot hey. Why IRL Expel you. Means you had no Case nor strong foundation for your Claim. You talked about Money and they should be in your side because they provide Fund for TRL. Is that right. My Question is How many of Old members still with you. Did you REPLACE all of them. How did you know the Financial Situation of the TRL.

    • @Reformed1-e1c
      @Reformed1-e1c 4 години тому

      @@Richard-z8z -the allegations are factual. The timing is very unfortunate but the whole issue occurred for a long time going back 16 years ago. It only spilled in 2018 and 2019 when the court in Nuku'alofa ruled in favour to remove the previous board because they failed to audit their finances or at least provide a financial report. -MMT was given by the King to the Tongan National Rugby League in 1986 as a gift. TNRL trademark that name and it belongs to them. It does not belong to the people because the King never gave it to the people. If you think that "MMT" belongs to the people or not trademarked, you will have to wonder how TNRL won their civil suit against T13 representatives in the high court in NZ. -I am not part of TNRL I am an observer of current issues. -Kristian Woolfe's contract was up for renewal in 2018 or 2019 but his demands were unrealistic. For example, he negotiated for 20% of market shares made by MMT and 20% of profit made from the games. Considering that TNRL was losing money as a result of the previous board under Semisi Sika, the new board doesnt have the financial means to agree to the terms. Essentially, Woolfe and Hopoate created a false narrative among the players claiming that the new board are liars and eating the money. That is an outrageous claim because Hopoate has zero evidence of this given that the new board came into effect 6 months after the previous board was removed in 2019. --How did I know about the financial situation of TNRL? Look up US$342,000 unaccounted, RNZ and Kaniva had reported this in 2019.

    • @Reformed1-e1c
      @Reformed1-e1c 3 години тому

      @Richard-z8z The timing is unfortunate and there's no real control over it because the court in Nuku'ualofa ruled to remove the board chaired by Semisi Sika. The reason they were removed was due to them failing to audit their finances. I am not part of TRL. Just an observer. Kristian woolfe's contract was up for renewal in 2018 or 2019. But his terms was unrealistic for TRL. He negotiated for 20% of market shares and 20% of profits made from games.

      @@Reformed1-e1c Without Prejudice. I hear you well. You see We the FANS were left in the Dark. You know Transparency n Honesty are best Policies. We All know it was a Sensitive issue n in Hindsight We learn that the Matter should not went to Court. Tonga needs a Sports Tribunal made up of People that have no Interest nor Involve in TRL but looking at the facts in more Friendly Environment. No Politicians should Involve in the TRL boards from the Beginning and about time Tonga politicians stay away . Never mix Sports and Politics as we know there was a Character Assassination of Semisi Sika by media Online which I found Unprofessional and outright Nasty in a Country hunger for Democracy. I'm not a PTOA supporter. Whether he was Quilty or not My point is to give him a Chance to Explain the Matter in a Humane Way. The matter re the Coach,you know How close the Players to him . That's Loyalty. TRL should learn from that. The FANS are Also Loyal and Supportive of the Team and Coach. It's a Rare Relationship to Achieve but When it Materialise it's hard to Break. The Army agree with that. You talk about 20%,Do you think 80% for TRL it's better than Nothing. Not a half full. It's Almost a full Cup. Not only that He deserves more. . The dispute was 5 years ago n the the Team still Climbing Higher n Higher. You forgot the Positive Influences the old MMT on the Local TRL clubs. I think it's Too late to Heal any Wounds. Remember it's the Local clubs TRL and Young People are Missing out on Opportunities and the Spirit of Celebrations with the Tonga International Team. Who looses the most here. The Children. The Stars of the Future. We can. all work together to mend Relationships. Try to get the support of Overseas FANS n Locals too. I agree TRL should have it's best players in the International Team. But local coach should learn from Mr Woolf too to take over one-day when opportunity arise. My Suggestion is for TRL to Willingly surrender the Name MMT for the Tonga International RL Team and make it Legal too. Everyone in the Pacific Islands will thank you all for that. MMT us not for Tongans Only. It's a World Wide Phenomenon. Tonga Raise the IRL Uniqueness Attractiveness n Popularity to A Level IRL never reached before. Tell TRL n New Board let this Year's Christmas SPIRIT AND BLESSINGS guide us All n We Hope Next Year 2025 We do it Again. Beat that South Seas Islander Team, Our Cousin Mal lol. Hope n Wish you Well. What an idiot! Pakilau has zero idea of leading sports administration in Tonga but has the audacity to demand the name MMT to give back to the team. MMT name belongs to the monarch not the people. The current TRL board is responsible to protect the IP and assets of TRL including its name. The previous board misused money that went unaccounted. Between 2017 and 2020. The current board is trying to salvage whats left unfortunately through lawsuits.

Could the TRL form a good relationship with these boys and get all these fans that are known world wide like wolf and his board crew can???? Why is it that when this MMT team gets a good ball rolling with decent players and now they want to trade mark the MMT name with a price but couldn't do it when Tonga didn't have a chance at beating NZ & AUS back in previous years and previous world cups???? @dkmaps8547 Wolfe and Sika tried to take control of the TRL. Sika was the sports minister in Tonga at the time and Wolfe wanted to be the director of TRL. They wanted to control over the MMT brand in Tonga. When the previous board was removed, the new administrators came in and found money went unaccounted between 2017-2020. IRL pumps in hundreds of thousands of dollars to TRL in which Sika was in charge, most of it what was left went unaccounted. This is after a financial auditing because TRL needed to declare to IRL their spending records. It's not fkma to discuss money issues, it's fkma when a foreign sporting body pumps money to Tonga but when it comes to give an account of spending, we got nothing to answer especially when there are hundreds of thousands of dollars gone missing.
