He is not talking about combat sports. He is talking about martial arts, systems of combat meant for battle or self defense. A true martial art is a complete system that deals in weapons, striking, grappling, throwing, locking etc. He is addressing the fact that there are people who will jump system to system thinking they need to grab different skills from different arts when in fact many arts have already addressed this. This causes problems as the person does not build a solid foundation and thus whatever system they came up with for themselves will have many holes and issues. issues that have already been dealt with by masters in martial arts that already exist. And mixed martial arts are that hybrids, the fusion of 2 or more styles. Wing Chun is a hybrid Southern White Crane, Southern Tiger, Southern Dragon and Southern Snake. It is a mixed martial art. Uechi Ryu Karate is a hybrid of Southern Tiger, Southern Dragon, Southern Crane. Hapkido is a hybrid of Aikijujitsu and TaeKyon. Choy Li Fut is a hybrid of 3 styles.
