    My son has been home-schooled since covid ended. The first year back he was going into Middle School 6th grade for the first time. He missed 50 days that year and they held him back. His repeat of 6th grade he missed 70 days. The amount of anxiety he had we couldn't get him out the door. So we started homeschooling. Now he's fallen behind and does not want to do any work. My wife and I are at a loss and are constantly worried and fighting about what to do. We are making no Headway. We are scared. I just wanted to say thank you for these videos. They are really helping

    I’m a very motivated and active person, I love to have a clean home and environment. My daughter is the total complete opposite of me. I’m growing super exhausted with this situation. I’m 30 and she’s 13. It’s tough, I try and set rules I write chores down, I award her when she does it correctly. But she chooses to stay in bed until 6pm, doesn’t even brush her hair or even shower. I don’t understand, I did not raise her this way.

    Trying for my first child now and I have been really thinking ahead about the kind of relationship I want to have with my child in the teen years. This video resonates with me. I remember being a teen in an authoritarian family dynamic. I remember feeling like I was never right, always had to prove myself worthy of praise and love, constantly feeling like I had to walk on eggshells and that my emotional needs were a burden on my parents. I had to stuff my pain and soldier on, acting like I was okay and had everything under control all of the time. I often cried myself to sleep from being so lonely even though I did not live alone. I don't want my child to go through that! It effects me even now as an adult. I still revert to suffering in silence with a smile on my face. I have been getting better with time but this is hardwired in my brain from early childhood.

    Great tips! I think strategy 1 is excellent. Trying to find the root cause. However, how do you get them to open up so you can have them discuss what the potential root cause may be? My 13 year old is flunking advanced math, and he blames the teacher and hatred for the subject, but he doesn't understand that he is not submitting homework or putting effort in his class. He ignores and never reads the teachers comments for improving his work and makes the same mistakes over and over again. So he has some cognitive distortion, too. I completely agree that as parents, we get upset and yell too much out of frustration. I definitely agree that spending more time with them is critical. Going on bike rides, getting physically active with them with sports, but they seem more glued to their phones than wanting to spend this time with parents.

    The wild thing about all of this is the concept of a teenager is a post WW2 concept and through most of human history there were two phases in life, pre-puberty and post. Once you went through puberty you were viewed as an adult and expected to act as one.

    • @AskDanielWong
      @AskDanielWong 20 днів тому

      Thanks! I think it would depend on the unmet emotional needs the teen has which is the root issue to be addressed. But a logical consequence that's something along the lines of apologizing to the teacher and the class might work.

    • @kimhenningolsen6838
