HEMA Longsword Tournament Compilation: Wessex League Exeter 2024
Short compilation of some of my best exchanges during the Tier A Longsword Competition in the Exeter leg of the Wessex League (UK) in November 2024.
I didn't perform as well as I had hoped in the longsword category of this tournament (2 wins, 2 losses), but I still managed to get some cool actions. My opponents were all highly skilled, and the matches were very enjoyable.
Now I have to train hard to do better next year :D
I have posted the full fights earlier on my channel, you can find them here:

    I admit I was skeptical at first but as I've gotten older I just can't guard these younger guys on the court the way I used to so I was desperate for something that could give me a fighting chance. Now while I did get some strange looks and snide comments at first, once people saw how effective the long sword is they quickly went silent....or maybe they went silent because of the blood loss. Hard to say. In any event, once I started waving that thing around my opponents didn't even bother driving on me. I had the key locked down so hard it made Covid blush. And the great thing about the LS is that if your opponents get cheeky and try for 3 pointers you've got enough range to poke an eyeball out, thus bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase dead eye shooter.

    whats it like to spar inside vs outside? (the difference)

    • @frenchgalloglass
      @frenchgalloglass Місяць тому

      The main difference is with the footwork. Sparring indoors in a sports hall allows us to use more ''explosive'' footwork, while outisde in the grass the ground is uneven and slippery so we have to be more careful. I think outdoors is more realistic :)

    Very cool video but the music ruined it (no pun intended)... You should try medieval music, or epic music, it would suit better the background

    • @frenchgalloglass
      @frenchgalloglass Місяць тому

      @bretteur2legende thanks a lot ! Well for the music I think it works well as it has a fast paced guitar rhythm with medieval instruments mixed with it, so it gives a "modern meets medieval" feeling, like the video with modern gear but medieval fencing and background. But I can totally understand that it doesn't work for everybody 😅 I'll keep your suggestion in mind and try to find medieval or epic music for future videos. But to be fair 98% of my videos don't have music at all, I was experimenting here haha Thanks again !

    Right guy (on the start) really needs to commit into thrusts. Left guy got him like that multiple times, but when having opportunity, right one decides to do more swings. And you can see by the way his body moves he's not entertaining the idea and then giving up, but didn't plan on transitioning into thrush while controlling the opponents blade. Still quality sparring, but right one really needs to work on his thrusts, both parrying and delivering them.

      We have a passion for history and we want to understand how people fought in the past. So we read and interpret old manuscripts and then apply the techniques in sparring and competitions. The use is that it keeps us fit while having fun, nothing more. Not everything in life needs to be practical ;)

    Very good. Additionally, I have found to further protect yourself, it helps to move your body and head to the left (sometimes with a lunging step) towards your opponent’s right shoulder. This allows you to strike deeper and move your body past where their sword can strike.

    Your partners fall into well-described in sources trap of holding sword too high when parrying, thats why they get hit with mittels. I may be easy to fix - all they need is to loosen up a bit and look less after your weapon, since this makes them to move their sword much too early.

      @@cosc_HEMA that sounds good, I will try. Usually after a streichen I throw a cut, like a left zwerchau, but in bolognese sidesword you can thrown an upwards false edge parry from the left (falso manco) and then immediately wind into a thrust, so with a longsword it should be like what you describe.
