Turn-construction(al) units - TCUs
Переглядів 4,7 тис.3 роки тому
Turn-construction(al) units are the primary building blocks of everyday language use. Every time we speak, we use these components to 'construct' our turns, and we project and recognize possible TCU ending points as part of understanding when it's our's or someone else's turn to talk. Any speaker of a language already knows how to use TCUs - this is an introduction to what they are, and how we ...

Action ascription

We spend most of our lives trying to get things done - and much of those things get done with language. But getting actions done is not always straightforward - and it isn’t about what you intend. Hello! How do you transcribe conversation which involves taboo expressions? Or what symbols will the analyst use to cover those up to avoid vulgarity especially when it is going to use in academic papers?

      I wish I could say something magical that makes it easy, but I use Word. I listen a lot, and I transcribe it. I use Audacity or Audition to listen more easily to audio files & measure audio timings, and I use ELAN to more easily segment, time & view visual elements. But it really is just manual labour.

    how do you measure the pauses accurately? thanks

    • @emdoesca
      @emdoesca 3 роки тому

      It depends on what you are measuring. Audacity or Audition or Praat allow you to see the waveform and easily measure time between sounds. ELAN is the tool I use to do this for visual components.

    Is there someone who could help me with a very short transcribing like that for money?

    • @emdoesca
      @emdoesca 3 роки тому

      Usually people use transcription as a way to start analysis themselves, so it isn't super common to have other people transcribe the Jeffersonian elements of EMCA material (guide book here: doi.org/10.1093/acrefore/9780190228613.013.131). When it is passed on, it's usually to other trained graduate students or postdocs. There are a couple of transcription services that do Jeffersonian work, but I'm afraid I haven't tried any yet.
