Thank you so much!
Please update!!! Really wanting to see if you were able to get a good paying job and the work environment!!
Hi! I was able to get a job that I absolutely love. I did choose a private school, so unfortunately the pay is not great. There are other perks to my specific job though, so it is worth it to me.
Thank you for this video, I will start at WGU December 1st and I’m doing elementary education and special education. What tips can you give about your experience so far and advice please?
How exciting! I have graduated and am in my first year of teaching! Work at your own pace and try to finish as many courses as possible in a term. This will save you money. Also, try pre-assessments early on and if you pass them, I would try the final assessment. You can pass a class in a day if you know the content:)
@@emilyg1460 Thank you so much!!!!
I’m wondering if it will be an issue finding a teaching job since WGU does not give you a GPA and just gives pass/fail. Most schools will probably want a transcript, I’m wondering if that will be enough?
I understand. I was worried about that too! I did get both licenses and was able to get a job with my transcript. I ended up accepting a job at a private school, but I did interview for public. (At that point they knew where I went to school). I will say it could depend on the state to, but Ohio seems to require a lot more than most states.
I live an hour from there and love cosi
Can you do some of your PCE online/virtual?
As far as your actual teaching experience, I don’t believe so, unless it is approved. There are some additional tasks that you can do on the computer.
I’m starting at wgu probably in January! For elementary education and special education dual. I’m already nervous about student teaching lol. How long did your lessons have to be during student teaching for the videos you had to take?
Do not worry! You have time and they help prepare you along the way. I did not find student teaching to be the most difficult, but I had an awesome clinical supervisor and Host teacher! Videos have to be 45 min running, that does not mean you have to stand in front of the class and talk for 45 min straight on one topic. I would teach and then have students work independently while I pulled a small group or we would do a lesson and then a class game.
What level of degree is it
A bachelor’s degree
Congratulations 🎉
Thank you so much
HI! I'm considering the WGU teachers license program. I understand you did the program that has both the elementary and special education license. I hope you don't mind answering a few questions about it. How long did the program take you to complete? What would you estimate the study hours each week to be?
I finished the whole program in 2 years. The hours vary depending on the course. There were some courses I did not need any study/ prep time and some courses I would spend a couple of hours each night reading/ taking notes/ studying. Hopefully this helps:) Feel free to ask more questions!
Congrats on finishing your program and getting a job! How exciting! Can you give more detail on the EdTPA? I start student teaching this august and am worried about balancing everything.
Thank you! Are you doing the dual licensure or just elementary Ed?
@@emilyg1460 I’m just doing the Elementary Education program.
@@ginnawest1993 I will make a point to post a whole video on it this weekend. I will explain the tasks a bit and what helped me succeed:)
@@emilyg1460 you are awesome thank you! Congrats again, I hope to see some classroom set up videos in the future as well! ❤️
Please continue to make these videos. I’m a fellow night owl and will begin my PCE/DT this coming school year. I’ve also been checking off my state exams and things in the interim. I’ve also been doing research on the edtpa and it sounds terrifying. Excited to follow your journey!
Thank you for watching my videos:) I have a video update coming very soon! The EdTPA is stressful, but there are ways to navigate it. I may make a video on that too. Good luck with everything. Please feel free to ask questions, if I can provide support:)
@@emilyg1460 I can’t wait for the update! I just scrolled through some of your videos. My youngest daughter’s name is Adeline (she’s 5) 😊
@@ginnawest1993 Aw I love that! 😊
Does the WGU college place students or is that on the students When they get to that PCE/DT portion of the classes
WGU places you. If you have previously worked for a district they may reach out to them first, if you would like, to see if they can place you there.
Older students can still enjoy book buddies 😊
Very true!
I'm about the start the teachers college at WGU. About how many hours a week did you spend on school? I'm a mom as well and planning to work on school when my kids are in bed so wondering how many hours a week I should plan to dedicate to schoolwork.
It really just depended on the day and what course/ how quickly I wanted to finish. Some days I wouldn’t do anything, some days I would dedicate a couple of hours. Nothing to crazy until the courses towards the end which I would spend more hours on to complete the courses quickly.
Dose PCE happen in two placements or one? For example just elementary) Dose DT happen in one placement? (For example just high school)
It just depends! Either one can be 2 placements to include a special education experience (if this is a part of your degree ). If you are only going for elementary education you will have two placements in Gen Ed elementary classrooms.
How did you do your special ed courses before graduation? My mentor told me I have to finish my MATELED first.
My degree is dual licensure elementary education and Special Education. So every course and exam I needed was added to my degree plan. I’m assuming if you cannot add them if it is not the degree plan you started. I am also not sure if it is available in each state. My current degree is a bachelor’s.
Did you do your PCE and student teaching back to back?
Very close. There was about a month and a half between my placements.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the honesty. I have been considering taking the teaching program at Western University. Did you already have some of the classes done for teaching at a different university before you started attending WGU?
I had 3 courses from community college and 1 course from WGU Business college that transferred:)
Hi! I just got assigned my PCE mentor teacher and registered for the course, and am completely overwhelmed with the info dump. What did you do before your first day observing and on that first day? Do you have to give the teacher something (besides their observation instrument) to sign? Do you check in to the school as a visitor? There's so much information and so many links I'm nervous I'm not going to do it right. Plus I have my other courses and am working :/ so I'm pretty nervous and overwhelmed. I'd appreciate any help, and good luck to you in all you hope to achieve!
Do not stress about PCE! I know it seems like a lot, the most important thing is to make sure to log all of your hours and work on the task with your mentor teacher. I met the mentor teachers before hand and just introduced myself and got to see their room before starting. I had to sign in, in the office daily. I would start out the first week just observing and getting to know the kids before planning. Hopefully this helps!
@@emilyg1460 thank you, that does help!
How was PCE? Do you have to wait to be placed or can you place yourself? I work as a Paraprofessional in an elementary school. So every day is PCE! Thank you.
This is a great question. So PCE went great and very quickly. I am going to do an updated video soon. I was also a para and chose to end my job (it was the end of the school year) before doing PCE, so they placed me, thankfully in the same district. They do have an option where you can work with your placement coordinator and principal to where you may be able to do PCE in your building. I know for my specific position it wouldn't have worked out due to working in the classroom every day, but also having to do multiple duties. I would definitely ask your mentor and placement coordinator to help guide you:)
Hey hey! I have a question. Let’s say you’re already an employee for the board of education and you have to do student teaching. Is it possible to do so in the school you already work for?
Hi! So for me, I was not able too. The district I worked for did place me, but in different schools. I had to resign from my job unfortunately.
how long were you in wgu? how long did it take you to complete it
I started the teachers college in Jan 2021. I should graduate by this Summer. It really just depends on how quickly you can complete your courses.
Did you get financial aid?
@@arianasalinas2002 yes, I used financial aid. They accept aid and loans.
Congratulations. Mom of two here as well. I'm in the MATELED at WGU and really been loving the experience with the college
I definitely recommend it! Good luck to you😊
When are you expected to start student teaching?
I have one more class, with in class observation that I start next week. After that course, I will apply for student teaching.
@@emilyg1460 how do you do student teaching if it is all online.
@@Spurhope student teaching is the only part of the program that is not online. Your experience is in a classroom, but from my understanding all of my observations will be done through video. I am starting soon and will be able to provide a bit more information.
do they do your placement near where you live like within the district you are a resident in.
It just depends if they have established relationships with those districts. I would say they definitely try. I got placed in the district I reside in, but I also was an employee. They can place you within a certain radius, which I believe is 60 miles.
Does your program include state certification? Do the masters program include it? This is critical in getting a teaching job.
Yes, I have to complete all of the required state licensure tests to apply for my license. The masters programs depend on the program. My state does accept teachers to complete their Masters through WGU.
How much have you paid so far?
I do not know the exact amount, but if I graduate when I believe, I will have cut down a 4 year degree to 2 years. You pay per term, not credit hour like most schools, so I saved by not paying 4 terms (2 per year).
2 years is like 16k
Do you arrange your student teaching or WGU? How long have you been doing the program?
You work with a placement coordinator for your placement for student teaching. If you are working in a district already they take that into consideration and try to place you with that district. I started the teachers college January 2021, with a couple of transferred credit hours.
Congratulations!! Keep up the great work. You will definitely find a job. You might even get an offer from the school district where you will be doing your student teaching. It's better that you waited till you were older to start school. I'm currently earning a BS in Mathematics Education (Middle Grades).
Thank you so much! It feels amazing to be towards the end. That is awesome, good luck to you!
Are the tests proctor tests ?
Yes, all of the tests required will have to be scheduled and will be proctored. I have been able to schedule same day, usually the time I want to take my tests.
I hope that these two lines reach your beautiful heart they find you in the highest experience
Hi Emily. About the Teachers College, must you be a resident of the United States to enroll. I plan on starting August 1st, and I originally wanted to study English. But that option wasn't there. So I switched to Elementary Education Degree. But I wanted to know, is it for only US residents, or generally anyone can take it and get a degree.
This would be a great question to call and ask. I did a quick search and all I could find was information that WGU can only have students in the US or who are in the military stationed in a few different countries. I am sorry I don’t have more information!
Hi, what state are you in?
I am in Ohio
Thank you!! I am a substitute teacher. In my state, we only need Bachelor's degree, clearances, fingerprinting, and a 12-part course. I started WGU on June 1st, but I couldn't officially start classes till the 3rd. This is a second BS degree for me.
Well shared your journey to be a teacher…

@@morgantallent6813 That is so exciting! You guys will do amazing!
@@emilyg1460 thank you much!! your video motivated me and made me even more excited to start!
@@morgantallent6813 yay! im going for my bachelors in elementary education and im starting with no credits. What about you?
How do you balance working full time, a family and school? And how were you able to get ahead
I do almost all of my school once my children are in bed. They are younger so go to bed fairly early, or my husband helps so I can focus. Same on weekends, my husband watches the kids for a few hours so I can focus on school. I take all of my exams later at night, around 9pm. Some classes you can pass in a few days if you already know the material, which means you can add more on. I am doing another video soon because I passed the most classes this past term!
I just applied to the teachers college at WGU for the elementary education program. Today I spoke to my admissions counselor and all I have left to do is submit transcripts, get financials figured out, and do orientation! I plan to start classes in fall this year!
That is so exciting! Some classes will come easier as others, don’t give up!
Hi! I'm hesitating in going to WGU, I read a lot of bad reviews, also very good ones... but you know always the bad things tends to get more weight in the mind ...
Congratulations on moving through your program ahead of schedule! That’s always such a good feeling when you’re just rocking through classes and getting them done. 😊
Thank you so much! 😊
I did not know they have a Proctor Test late at night!
Yes! It is the best, so convenient!
Connect me, too, please. Thanks, 🌞.
How can I get a computer?
They do not provide computers, I am unsure if there are ways to use loans or programs that may help. I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful!
How is the math classes is it hard? I start April 1st. I am in my last two weeks of Academy for PACA right now. And im nervous to start hopefully i can buckle down and get it done in two semesters or even 6 months! I also need to figure out a good study method for myself. 😬😬
Math classes were not difficult for me, I felt like I learned most of the content in high school. Definitely find out what works best for you!
@@emilyg1460 At my community college i had went to it was very difficult especially for the degree i was going to be getting. Im doing at WGU my Elementary Education Degree also. When you first start what do you get i was told they send you some sort of box with information is that true?
@@KateyBug964 there was not much in the box. I got a mug, some pamphlets, and a dry erase board for exams.
Did you go into the program already with credits that were transferred? How long is it going to take you to do the bachelors?
I had 3 classes transfer- so not many. I am almost done, so about 2 years.
Does the 2 year include the student teaching or just the courses?
Wow that’s encouraging. I’m also a mom of 3. I am a stay at home mom but the fact that I can go at my own pace at Wgu really attracts me to them. Because I think a 4 year for a degree is a bit excessive lol.
@@FavuQuad I agree! It definitely appealed to me. I started the teaching program Jan 2021 and am planning on graduating Spring 2023. It is set to be four years, but if you really dedicate your time you can shorten it.
@Espurrrxd I agree it feels long, but it is a bachelors degree, so that is the typical amount of time.
Hello have you taken educational psychology
Yes, I have.
How many courses have you been able to finish per semester? I know everyone’s different but curious what’s even possible to strive for.
I have done up to 11 courses in a semester. My goal this semester is 14- I have already passed 5 within a month.
