Episode 53 - Branstree, Selside Pike, Tarn Crag, Grey Crag, Harrop Pike // Nuttalls - Lake District
In this episode, I head back to the Lake District. These are part of the Far Eastern Fells in the Nuttalls book and I enjoyed a fantastic day on this rather boggy route. At 31km in length it was a big day but 8km of that was on the bike. I was surprised at how busy the main tops where considering the terrain, its quite a popular place, although saying that I appeared to be the only one approaching from the east. Walking in Wales I've done so many of the tops now that I can look around the skyline and name the majority of them. In England, I haven't a clue what I am looking the most of the time so it will be great to get to know them in the years ahead.... all being well. 😊
About Rudolph’s Mountains
Welcome to the Rudolph’s Mountains channel, which records my journey to visit all the mountains in England and Wales over 2000ft, known as The Nuttalls. They were named after John & Anne Nuttall, who researched and created the initial list of tops, and published quite excellent books on how you could visit them all. I don’t always follow their routes, as I prefer to research the route myself, but I always use their route as a starting point.
I have been making movies of my days in the mountains for a couple of years now, initially just to share my adventures with friends and family. I can’t get out all the time, due to family and work commitments, so it’s going to take many years to get through them all, health permitting.
Each Episode is edited down from the original movie to around 30 minutes or less and then released on a Saturday at 12 noon. There won’t be a movie every week though. Each Episode has subtitles, as even I can’t understand what I’m saying half of the time!
If you are planning to venture out on the hills yourself, please make sure you research your route and that you are properly prepared. Always check the mountain weather and ground condition forecast, but don’t trust it! Mountain weather can be unpredictable, so prepare for the worst. Enjoy the mountains, but always take care so that you return home safely.
Thanks for watching.

Episode 52 - Druim Fada // Scotland - Hiking - Grahams
Переглядів 9514 днів тому
In this episode I’m back in Scotland for a family holiday where I managed to get a sneaky half day walk up a Graham located just behind where we were staying. It was a beautiful day with amazing air clarity where the mountains seemed to stretch on forever. The range was called Druim Fada with the highest top Stob a’Ghrianain and its situated north west of Ben Nevis, which dominates the skyline ...

The weather this weekend was horrible with torrential rain throughout but a glance at the forecast showed that the weather in the Lake District was expected to improve late afternoon on Sunday and a high pressure was to settle overnight. With some hectic calls to get the Monday off work, I headed up the M6 in terrible conditions and arrived at the start of the walk about half an hour after the ...

Welcome to the 50th Episode of Rudolph's Mountains. In this episode I head north to my first group of Nuttall's in England, in the Yorkshire Dales. I headed up the night before, arriving just before midnight and slept in the layby at the start of walk. I was up five hours later so I could head out before sunrise to bag these four tops. The weather was perfect, the views beautiful and it made fo...

I’d been putting off these tops for quite some time, as these rounded heather bound lumps aren’t renown for great views. I thought I could spice it up a bit by doing a sunset walk, and with an improving forecast I set off late one Saturday afternoon. Sadly, the weather didn’t improve and so it turned out to be walk in overcast conditions over these five less inspiring tops. Having said all this...

I’d been out of the mountains for over a month due to a dodgy back and so returned to the hills a little apprehensive wondering whether I could get through a day without incident. I picked these quiet Moelwyn Hills, knowing that the more popular tops would be busy with it being the summer holidays. I ended up walking a route on the way to Moel Penamnen that I wouldn’t recommend, far better to a...

After a week off work awaiting a good mountain forecast, on the last day of my holidays there was a reasonable forecast for the evening. Walna Scar was great, along with White Maiden. One of the best things about bagging Nuttalls is that it takes you to places you may not ordinarily go. Some of these quiet, off the beaten track tops are some of my favourites. Thanks again. 😊

I know Wales so well now it feels a little out of my comfort zone going where I don't recognise the hills around me, but this is also exciting and I am really looking forward to exploring the English hills. Funnily enough, I've been planning some routes around the Cheviots so may end up there before too long. 😊

    I'm a local fell runner and traditional hiking boots can be pretty dangerous all over the Carneddau in the wet, it gets so slippery, but fell running shoes have much better grip on soft and steep terrain, and some fell running shoe companies like Inov8 and VJ Sport also make boots which have grip designed more for softer ground than traditional hiking boots, which are designed to be a jack of all trades and master of none, I use Inov8 boots around there which work really well in the wet as they have a studded grip pattern.

    Excellent video once again! I first climbed Quinag in 1966 and again in 1977 but, staying regularly at the wonderful Inchnadamph Hotel, I've climbed it several times since . . . the best being traversing the whole range with my daughter in April 2022 on our week's visit from Canada . . . when we virtually had the mountain to ourselves. Magic part of the world which I know well as my dear departed dad was born in Lairg and my childhood and teenage summers were spent on my uncle's sheep farm just north west of the town. I worked on the farm on the bad days and cycled to the mountains of central, north and west Sutherland on the good days, climbing all those over 2,500 ft (plus Suilven and the Coigach hills) before I was out of my teens. Happy days . . . and it's wonderful to still be climbing them at 77 and counting!

    That was wonderful to watch, and quite emotional for me. Thank you. Suilven has an attachment to it for me. One of my big brothers climbed it, and loved it. He'd stayed in the bothy. Not sure how many times he went up it. Anyway, he did climb it in 2019. In 2020, he got poorly. On the day he found out that treatment wasn't working, he had a conversation with my sister (she was also going through treatment). He said, at the end of the day he just wanted to stand on Bamburgh beach and say b***er. My sister replied with an offer to stand aloft somewhere in Wales and say it for him. He said, 'or go to Suilven and shout 'ar*e'. He died in February 2021. So I decided to had to take his message up there for him. I hadn't done any walking or climbing in years. First thing I did was join a gym and took up spinning. I set a date. 21st June 2022. I took my friend with me, who lost his partner suddenly in 2020. So we both had meaning to go. He drove the 300 plus miles, stayed at Inchnadamph, and set off for Suilven on the morning of 21st June. It was foggy. The fog didn't lift. So we didn't see Suilven at all. I knew she was there, but it was frustrating. I remember the relentless path, ups and downs, the turn for the bothy, the bridge, the rise up to the start of the route up to Suilven. My friend was struggling by this point. Wasn't sure if he was going to make it. We sat on a rock and had to decide what to do. He said he's go on. So we climbed up that first ridge, the one before you get to the loch at the base of Suilven. We suddenly realised she was there, lurking in fog. We met a few hikers, one of which advised to not go up. So I decided we couldn't. The fog was too much. I lay back on a massive boulder and looked up, and as if by magic, the fog cleared just a little for me to see the top. It felt magical. My friend did the most amazing shouting of 'ar*e', it echoed through the valley. We left a small teddy up there, and some little rocks/crystals. All in memory of my brother and my friend's partner. Then I turned my back on Suilven and left. My friend started off down the steep path. A few steps down and he fell. He went tumbling forward, then came to a stop. I ran down to him, and found him on the edge of the path, with a drop behind him, his bad stopping him rolling further. He was upsidedown. Luckily, nothing broken, perhaps his pride. And lots of scrapes and bumps. It made the long walk back really long. We got back to the lodge at about 9pm. I left him there and ran to get the car. He thought he'd found a lovely place to sit, until the midgies descended. Hah! Insult to injury. I never went back to Suilven. Although did stay at Achnarcarnin last May, where I could see her from the window. I don't think I can do it now. I have an injured knee. I know I've written far too much, but it was just to tell my story. And say thank you for sharing, again. Maybe next time you can do an honoury shout out of 'ar*e' for me, please. Thank you.

      Thanks for sharing your moving story, which stirs up many memories for me. I've lost count of the number of days I have spent in the dreaded fog. When it clears though, even just for a moment, it feels like magic. (If you have a few minutes spare, Episode 3 is a perfect demonstration of this). I remember walking down Snowdon with my youngest daughter, she was 7 at the time, when both my feet went from under me. I remember trying to let go of her hand so not to pull her down with me, but she was determined to hold on. My pack saved me, keeping my head from smashing on the rock and jamming between boulders, stopping me sliding down. I hope you manage to get your knee sorted and get back in the hills again. I thought for a time that my mountain days were over when I tore my ACL. However, thanks to a piece of my hamstring and a talented surgeon, my knee was stabilised and I'm able to share my adventures on here. It's so great to hear how they helps others to revisit special times for them. Thanks for watching, I'll be sure to shout 'ar*e' if I get up there again. 😊

    Great video which brought back a lot of happy memories. I first climbed Suilven in 1967 (both tops), secondly in 1983 (both tops again) and most recently in 2019 at age 72 . . . 52 years after my first ascent. Wonderful mountain which I hope to climb again this autumn or next spring . . . as I now live in Vancouver, I only get over to Assynt for a couple of weeks a year.

      Thanks for your message. Glad that it helped you to re-visit those happy times. 😊 Well done on getting to that 2nd top. I'll get up there one day. So good to hear that you've been climbing mountains for over 50 years. That's fantastic. I didn't really get into hillwalking until my 40s so feel like I've missed out a bit. Hope you manage to get back over from Canada and get up there again and that you get a beautiful clear day.

      Hello, I believe that Maesglase and Cribin Fawr overlook the Mach Loop, one of the popular viewing points is near Craig y Bwlch which is north of Cribin Fach. That said, I've been up Maesglase a couple of times and not seen any jets zooming by. 😊

    The Garbh Choireachan is a great ridge. I used to do it in the other direction and returned via the posties path or try and hitch a lift from Achiltibuie. Great video and thanks for posting it.

    Hi mate, are you doing an episode per route in the nuttalls book, if so I’d be interested which ones you have/can potentially combine. I’ve done that in the lakes but seems trickier in wales without a camp out

    • @rudolphsmountains9769
      @rudolphsmountains9769 4 місяці тому

      Hello, thanks for getting in touch. I do start by looking at the Nuttall's book routes but then often end up changing them depending upon what I can see on the satellite view on OS Maps or if I've been up them before. Many of the routes in the book are fairly lengthy already so it would be a challenge to combine with others or include different tops. Let me know if you have any questions regarding specific tops included in any of the episodes and I'll be happy to share my experience. The Nantlle Ridge Route in this episode is best done as a linear walk as repeating the route like I did in this episode was a bit too much, for me at least! 😊

      Cycling in definitely a great idea. I enjoyed the walk in, watching Suilven growing as we got closer all helped build up to the excitement of the climb up. Going back though I would have given my right arm and a pack of Iron Bru Jelly Babies for a mountain bike to get back on!

      Yes, I love it up there. I think it's unusual in that the mountains are mostly on their own, rather than part of a range. It seems to make them so much more dramatic and appear more massive. Suilven is coming next, which was a particularly special day for me. Thanks for watching. 😊

      Thanks for your kind comment. I didn't expect too much of this one as it didn't look too exciting on paper. In the end it was a really enjoyable afternoon. Only saw one other person and the views at the top were lovely. It's a reminder to me that I don't always need to do epic days out bagging loads of tops. I've still got the Western Berwyns including Pen y Boncyn Trefeilw which I believe is one of the Hewitts, but the walk description in the book doesn't make it an attractive prospect.

    • @andrewkingdom
      @andrewkingdom 7 місяців тому

      Yes there’s a few tops in that area some are ok others including that one are accessible from a forestry road and are slightly dull but a quiet area with good views of Arran Fawddwy connected all together in a circular walk it’s not a bad route but don’t get lost in the forest like me lol 😂

      Thanks for your comment. Yes, its been a very soggy year so far. I'm hoping for a nice spell of settled weather soon. It seems like ages since we had a run of good mountain forecasts. I enjoyed this one as it was a nice and quiet despite being Easter weekend when the more popular hills would have been jam packed.
