Much loved! I tried to chase the Charlotte Mason style for several years. It also seemed never ended trying to keep up with the way. At the beginning of this school year, I realized I had to give it up. I was turning to the CM style almost as an idol. And I also realized I needed to let it go to focus on God’s Word with my teaching. Another reason was that my oldest also loves the textbook style. Ha! He struggles with dysgraphia and so dictation has been impossible. And he needs more of a phonic approach and other resources to help him. After finally letting it go, it was liberating! But hard to do so at first. But I’m enjoying all of homeschooling with all of my children much better. We still use many CM ways, but also use many other ways too, as you said. Thanks so much for making this video!

Great video. I think these homeschooling parents' criticism is because homeschooling is frightening (I say this as a homeschooling mom)---you're constantly second-guessing yourself: am I doing the right thing by homeschooling my kids, have I chosen the right method of homeschooling, etc.?---and I think some homeschooling parents project that insecurity onto other homeschooling families. (And just as I'm writing this comment, I hear you're saying this exact same thing.)

Do you have any thoughts on this curriculum after a few years of using it? How long did you guys continue? My daughter is a kinesthetic learner. She has done well with First Language Lessons, but I'm trying to decide if we should continue with Level 4 on that or if I should see if there is another curriculum that would work better for her. She does enjoy diagramming sentences.

I seriously could not relate more to this ! My style of homeschool was textbook free , workbook free ,living books, and child led .However my kids hated it , and I always thought I just must be doing it wrong and would switch it up and try to make it more exciting, nothing worked .Turns out they just wanted the facts without all the fluff . They LOVE and I do mean Love textbooks and workbooks! go figure 😂

The school bureaucracy is the biggest obstacle. I am about to attempt placing my son in grade 9 skipping grades 7 and 8, but I have a very little hope. With him we are already studying math for the high school (grades 11-12) and he does not have any problems whatsoever. I definitely see a potential. However, when I contact the high school authorities, they will tell me that according to their policies, they will be able to place my son in their school only if sir James Madison personally approves this placement. With a big friendly smile they will tell me that they sincerely want to help and they recommend me contacting his secretary about an appointment. It is frustrating when ridiculous rules and policies totally override a commonsense.

This is very helpful. Getting the well trained mind was my first step into homeschooling too. I started reading, and I started getting some of the resources. But I didn’t get very far into the book when I hit the history section, and I felt that lack your talking about in regards to biblical worldview. I didn’t know what kind of homeschooling I wanted to do, but I felt like this was not the person I wanted to model behind, because she didn’t prioritize highly enough what I wanted to. If YOUR homeschool doesn’t prioritize YOUR priorities, then why are you even homeschooling? Right?!? I love that you are adding more apologetics and adding more solidly Christian materials over ambiguous. Discipling our children as parents is our God- given responsibility, and no one can do it for us!!

This is interesting. My son will be 5 in October and even though he'll be in kindergarten he'll be doing 1st grade level work. It never occurred to me that he might skip a middle school. I think he might need a year to work on "himself" as he hits puberty though to be honest. ... and I don't really know how to use a planner effectively so I guess I'm gonna have to figure that out. I just kind of assumed 2 hours of homework for every hour in class and it worked out. There was not much time for anything else though.

I joined one this year. It was only once a month. My sons loved it but my daughter did not. She would say hi to the girls and they would ignore her and she felt left out. I told her thats what public school is like you have different cliques. We quit going and don’t plan on going back. We can just get together with people who like and enjoy getting together with us once in awhile;)
