    Movies show the hero shooting hundreds of shots at the baddies with their six-gun. Of course this is completely false- It would be no more than a dozen shots out of a six-gun before reloading. 🤔

    Cowyboys didn´t wear pistols as seen in the Hollywood movies, they were cumbersom and could get in the way when working. If they did have any gun it was kept in their bedroll and taken out for when needed for hunting. Some cowboys did have small pocket pistols that they kept in their chap pocket but this was not a common practice.

    well, the only really bad thing in tombstone is the price for gas if you didn't fill up in, say,. Tucson on your way to Douglas or wherever . and yes, you can watch a reenactment of the shootout like 2-4 times a day, depending on weather and day of the week. tourist -y stuff like that. couple of nice restaurants, too.

ONLY criminals still carried, hidden, not on the hip. thank you for an excellent presentation. let me know, please, if you build/ write any other videos.

    “Cowboys are an American invention”. And then you go on to say that they came from South America , which makes them undeniably an American invention. You do know that the United States is NOT all of America?

    7 myths? Try about 7,777, Virtually everything everyone thinks they know about it is a "myth", and that's putting it charitably. Everything in movies is bollocks, from the depictions of town-layouts to gunbelts (no idiot kept his bullets in exterior belt-loops, because those didn't exist). Most photos are heavily doctored, most news articles were outragious hoaxes, and most promoted famous people outright frauds (including such luminaries and Danial Boone and Wild Bill Hickock). Read your mileswmathis updates daily.

    The large mirror behind the bar was in place so patrons could see behind them to aboid being shot in the back. There were no stools to sit on at the bar ad it would be difficult to draw a pistol when seated.

    I would add, that although the west could be a violent place, the old South of the 1800's was probably more violent than the west. Certainly there was much more extrajudicial violence, lynchings, murders, etc., in the South.

    Two things make the rest less believable. One you stated the "Recorded" deaths on the Oregon Trail was between 10,000 and 30,000. How can the number but like if they are "recorded". Two you make the claim that there were 8 bank robberies cover 15 states. So did most of these BANK ROBBERIES only involve 1/2 of a bank. Good try but not spot on with everything.

    Butaccidents and disease dint make for good movies so 90% of Hollywood movies are about Indian fighting. In most of those the Indian was the bad guy when all they were doing was defending THEIR land. But Hollywood seldom shows this because most people don't want to know about that

    The term "cowboy" itself underwent changes over time. In Revolutionary times, boys handled the cows that belonged to to the Army. Obviously, without refrigeration, the cows needed to be kept alive until eaten. Then, in the Western Expansion, derilicts and roustabouts who were looked down upon were called cowboys as an insult, the implication being that they were good for nothing other than the work being done by boys. Gradually, the term was used for anyone who worked cattle.

Would be nice to see this info in the video's notes, or even within the video. Without knowing the sources/references how do we determine accuracy?

    Brushy Bill was no more Billy the Kid than I am. That old, demented, dishonest huckster was 70 in 1950, not 91. His own family discredits Brushy Bill as a "teller of tall tales" and it is disgusting that people try to give the laurels earned by the real Billy the Kid to that fraud Brushy Bill who was unworthy of shining Billy's boots.

    The American cowboy myth was so well established by 1904 that at a county fair you could be outfitted as a cowboy for pictures, the whole thing big hat, nun, holster, sheepskin chaps neckerchief and all. It would be similar to dressing as batman for a fun pickture today for kids. The popularization of the traditional idea of cowboys was somewhat like the comic books of today. I have a picture of a grandfather from 1904 taken at a fair in the getup. He ran a livery stable in Calgary. So when you see the fake cowboys of today reliving what they claim is history, understand it is comic book history.

    Elmer Keith wrote in "Hell I Was There" how someone tried robbing the bank in his Montana town. The townsfolk turned out to help the sheriff take down the would be robbers. They did not get far. Citizens had an interest in protecting the bank since that was where their many was held and there was no FDIC to protect them against loss.

    • @davidroman1654
      @davidroman1654 18 днів тому

      The FDIC does not prevent a loss from a bank robbery. Most, if not ALL banks have insurance policies that would cover loss from theft as well as many other actions. FDIC only protects the deposits held by the bank if the bank fails.

      The James Gang was almost obliterated by the townspeople of Northfield, Minnesota when they attempted to rob the bank there. A bunch of hard men, wearing dusters, heavily armed, riding really good horses, they stuck out like sore thumbs riding into town and immediately raised suspicions.

    Okay, this is bullshit. No, cowboys didnt wear bowlers- except when they got a pro Photographer to do a pic. Yes, the classic Stetson didnt come along until later in the perdio, but if you look at period photos of cowboys or texas rangers etc our working they wore wide brim felt hats- sometimes called 'wideawake" hates. This myth comes from one writer who did find that the classic Steson was a late development, and saw photos of the Wild Bunch etc wearing bowlers. Teddy Roosevelt when he was out in the west wrote that someone had a bowler hat and everyone made fun of him, and ridiculed him, knocked it off his head, etc. Mark Twain writes about his "wideawake" hat- not a bowler. The James Gang alone robbed over 20 banks- so one gang, more than twice the ridiculous 8 quoted here. (Wideawake hat- because the felt had no "nap" get it?)
