    The summer is the worst time of the year to plant trees. The fall is the best time of the year to plant trees. Because then the trees go dormant and they store all their sugars in their roots, and then the roots get time to get established for the next year with plenty of sugars stored in the roots for the new growth right at the moment when they need those sugars the most. The sugars also help to protect the trees against pests and diseases because pest insects do not like sugar rich plants and trees. It is also recommended to plant some peas next to the trees. Those are nitrogen fixating plants and the nitrogen will enrich the soil and it will compliment the growth from the trees. All together it would be better to plant some pioneer tree species before you try to plant productive tree species. Because you are dealing with degraded land that lacks micro organisms and biodiversity. Plants and trees need micro organisms for their nutrients. It is a symbiotic relation. The micro organisms convert nitrogen and bio mass into plant available nutrients, and the micro organisms get sugars from the plants and the trees. The pioneer species are non productive but far more hardy tree species that help to make the land more fertile and to create more bio mass. And that helps to grow the population and bio diversity of the micro organisms. Which in turn will help the succession rate from the productive species. Productive tree species are more delicate, and they need the right soil conditions with plenty micro organisms. Stefan Sobkowiak is a professional fruit grower and he has a great youtube channel packed with information about orchards based on the principles of permaculture. 👍

    It will grow back. Ground sterilized keeps all vegetation from growing. Spray it on and you'll get 1-2 years of very limited if any growth of anything. I have been using it for decades and can attest to it. Have fun.

    It is a wonderful layout. I have only one suggestion because I know a thing or two about ponds. I would strongly suggest you to make or at least to reserve some room for a natural bog filtration system that can hold many aquatic or swamp plants. That will keep the pond clean and healthy. A bog filtration system is a natural filtration system that is basically a shallow area, or a little creek, that is separated from the pond, with lots of rocks as a habitat for the micro organisms where you can grow many water loving plants. But to make a bog filtration system work properly you will need an area that is about the 2/3 of the surface area from the size of the pond. It is more work to build, but in the long term it will be less work to maintain your pond and to keep everything healthy, and it will prevent a lot of issues that you would have with a regular pond that doesn't have a natural bog filter. And a system with a bog filter can be left unattended for longer periods of time. It is much more self sustainable. -The micro organisms are the most important factor from the pond. If they are healthy and when they have a large enough habitat with lots of surface area to live, then everything else will grow good and healthy too. -UV filters are bad and not needed at all, and they use a lot of power. -The larger that you can make the whole pond system the better it is. A large body of water has a better buffer against any possible negative factors, such as pollution and severe weather conditions and PH fluctuations. -Create shelves inside the pond so that you have different water levels in the pond. Different plant species need their own specific depth of water to be able to grow, such as water Lilly's. And those plants will give the pond the natural look that people love so much. -make sure to test the water regularly for water hardness levels, PH level, and all the other important water quality parameters. I would also recommend to learn more about ponds before you even think about putting fish in it. Because it is not as straight forward as you might think that it is. Not all water is the same. There is some chemistry involved that you need to be aware of, otherwise you will run into a lot of failures. It might sound intimidating, but it is not as intimidating as it sounds. But as with everything, you just need to know a few basic things. If you are really into ponds, and interested in growing food with your pond, you could even think about incorporating aquaponics growbeds. That is what I did. But that is the next level for pond systems. If you ever have any pond related questions or issues that need to be answered or solved, feel free to ask me about it. I would be glad to help you out if I can.

    I love the gardening stuff. And it is always nice to have things organized and usable and presentable.Hopefully the flowers are going to do well. But I would recommend to put some hay on top of the soil. It keeps some of the heat away. Seeds might germinate, but seedlings don't like the heat. The same thing goes for the trees. If you put a thick layer of mulch around the trees in a 10 ft diameter it is going to help the trees a lot. There is a whole group of desert and dry land people on UA-cam who are doing a similar thing as you guys. Heronthere is one in Texas, Timeline ranch is super impressive and he is also located in Texas in the Chihuahuan Desert. Desert gardens homestead in Arizona, and also Our Rocky Dream on the elephant farm in Arizona. And more folks that I have not mentioned. I want to invite you guys to join the community, and perhaps that if you leave a comment on their channels, and share your experiences about what you folks are doing and what your ambitions are, more people might visit your channel as well. Because I know for a fact that the people who are watching those and other channels are interested in these type of projects. That is if you were not already familiar with those channels. Anyway, good progress and great tips 👍

Roughly about 679 trillion miles away, or close to it, I think, but I am not completely sure, it could be less, but if you had to walk that distance it is still pretty far away. I know next to nothing about building a shed and making it durable and water proof, and what the best way to do it is. I am sure that professional contractors would have something to say about it. But at the end of the day all that matters is what you think yourself. And if the materials were cheap we would all build the perfect castles with the perfect materials and tools from our dreams. And it is just a shed to cover some water tanks, so how luxurious do you want to make it, and how much money do you want to put into it, right? And on top of that, at a later stage you might find some cheap or free reclaimed wood and do a second layer of siding on top of the trim. I enjoy your videos. You are making good memories together, that is precious. And you are having fun while doing it. And in real life it never goes 100% perfect. Only TV shows make it look as they do everything perfect. I was watching this other YT channel from a guy who completely restored a wooden sail boat. Everything to the last detail was perfect and from a very high quality. The man who was building the boat had surrounded himself with a team of expert boat builders, and he was on top of the situation during the entire build. The boat gets launched, they do a test with the engine, because besides sails it also has a completely hybrid drive train, and it won't get to the specified RPM, which is a big problem. Now it turns out that due to some freak communication error the gearbox that they got from their engine supplier does not have the correct gear ratio in relation to the size from their propeller, and that is not good for the engine and the gearbox. A new propeller is extremely expensive, but the quickest fix. And the other option is to take the entire gearbox out from the boat that was just finished building. To make a long story short. Sh#t happens, right? I also like the traditional red barn color. I wonder why the oldtimers painted their barns red? Was it just the cheapest paint? Or did it have an extra function or cultural history?

    • @CastleFarmsHomestead
      @CastleFarmsHomestead Місяць тому

    We love watching your videos! You and Brady are "beasts" lifting all that heavy lumber. There is some very nice lumber and so happy for you to have this great find! Best of luck to you both! I hope your shoulder heals quickly and Brady gets over his itchy skin. It could be from the wood.

      Brady's rash got better although he got it again out at the Ranch the other day. It's gone again.
