How to make Cinematic Music: Developing Hybrid Composition Workflows
In this video we'll explore a hybrid composition project I'm working on to help you identify parts of my workflow you can use in your own projects. This project is pretty big, so there won't be time in this video to do any real composing; Instead, hopefully you'll find useful ideas and demystify some of the process of working with large projects in Reaper or your DAW of choice.

    Hey man, how do you bring up the piano roll in Reaper? I was told before that I could only have one if I import a midi track to the virtual instrument

    • @f_c_r_
      @f_c_r_ 15 днів тому

      Reaper won't open midi editor unless you have midi on the track as far as I know. So if you're starting from scratch you want to make a midi item (Ctrl/cmd+click and drag on a track). I like to disable "loop item source" so I can adjust the length of the item later.

    • @f_c_r_

      If you're recording with a controller, you have to set the input to the correct MIDI input (if you only have one device you can use the one that says "all channels"). If you're inputting notes from the computer hold ctrl (cmd on mac) and click and drag in the track to create a MIDI region. You can then double click on it to add notes in the piano roll view. Hope that helps!

    I'm from Tunisia north Africa and i'm new to this this genre and as someone in the recent years start mostly listening to instrumental chill ambient music i stumbled upon an album calls "Mountain Realm - Grayshadow Ruins" and the first piece is it called "Temple Halls" reminded me of old RPG, CRPG OST music ,And it became my favorite piece of the album, probably in the whole genre to be honest to this day ,and the art cover of the album it's just 10/10 . and that led me to seek and search more of this genre like an adventurer exploring a dungeon seeking the rare and potentially legendary items hidden deep forgotten and sealed away for it to be only claimed by the worthy.

    I hate this so much. Whittling it down to a step by step with a 'formula', sucking the soul and creative freedom out of it. Nothing genuine here. Just creating a product. Instant dislike

    • @f_c_r_
      @f_c_r_ 4 місяці тому

      Appreciate the feedback (and surprised I haven't had more people saying things like this, since I probably would have thought something similar when I was a teenager). Like it or not, there are step by step formulas to writing, recording, and releasing music. This is an example of that, not something I'm forcing on anyone. I personally learn best from watch and learn videos like this, but I just change all the components so I end up learning the skill (recording with software) without copying the product (the music someone else filmed themselves recording). My other viewers might disagree with me but I hope you have a great day and channel some of that hate into something creative.

      It shows an example of how to approach the process of doing "dungeon synth",start to finish, and judging by lots of comments aiming at that topic,there is demand for this. Visual learners and the "help,i can't even try and fail without someone holding my hand" type of people can utilize it to take it from there and do their own The genre is going downhill since reddit found it anyway

  • @aurimuxxaz
    @aurimuxxaz 4 місяці тому

    Hey, i'm gonna use this video as a main guide to make the first track, as this is by far most comprehensive tutorial on youtube on this genre, so Im gonna rebuy midi keyboard as I had 88 keys before, but its just too big for me. For dungeon synth, is 49 keys fine or should i opt for 61 keys?

    • @f_c_r_
      @f_c_r_ 4 місяці тому

      Any digital keyboard will let you change octave, so you don't really need more than you use at one time. So, get 88 keys if you're a piano player and plan to play many parts at once, but you'll be fine (and likely better off) with fewer if you plan to play part by part one or two notes at a time. I personally have 73 keys, but got started and worked for years on a controller with 25 keys.

    If I may ask you, how many BPM did you choose to set in reaper to record that?

    • @f_c_r_
      @f_c_r_ 4 місяці тому

      The project is set to 140bpm. I'm deciding tempo in this type of track based on the vibe of the blast beats; Some songs benefit from slower "scissor beat" style blasts and some want faster ones for really extreme drum roll type sounds. Most tempos should be fine plus or minus 3-5bpm to maintain the same vibe, so you can more closely match what you're going for with other instruments that might sound too slow or fast.
