"To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow."
Join me and my garden friends as we tackle the never-ending challenges involved in growing a sustainable and beautiful outdoor habitat in Central Florida. After 30 years of growing vegetables, fruit, and flowers, I'm still gardening by trial and error, and I have the special challenges that come with sharing our home with some very eager 4-legged helpers who have their own agenda for my garden.

Why did my Sweet Potatoes split?
Too much water in the last few weeks before you harvest your sweet potatoes can cause the skin to slit. It’s not very pretty, but as long as the potato is firm it should still be edible.

Tomato leaf curl or Little Leaf Syndrome? Why are my new tomato leaves stunted?
Переглядів 54Місяць тому
There is something wrong with the new leaves on my San Marzano tomatoes. They’re not opening, remaining tightly curled on the tips of new growth. The plant has also stopped growing☹️ My top two guesses are Tomato Leaf Curl and Little Leaf Syndrome, and neither of them are good news. My best option is to dispose of the infected plant and start over with fresh soil.
Can I save a fallen Plumeria?
Переглядів 512 місяці тому
One of our large plumeria fell during Hurricane Milton. Using a 2x4, rope, a ratchet strap and bubble wrap, we were able to stand it up without any damage to the roots or trunk.
DIY Tomato Cages from bamboo and wire
Переглядів 472 місяці тому
There are several ways to trellis your tomato plants, but for our individual pots, nothing beats a tomato cage. One affordable option is to make tomato cages from bamboo stalks and wire for potted plants. We also use them for tomatillos, eggplants, and peppers.
Can you save papayas after the tree falls?
Переглядів 2072 місяці тому
Normally our papaya trees can withstand strong winds, but the ground was just too saturated for them to stay put when Hurricane Helene blew past Tampa Bay. I’m going to pull off the papayas, sit them on the counter, and hopefully watch them slowly ripen. Green papayas are edible, but they’re more like a vegetable than a fruit, and we count on using the sweet orange papayas in smoothies througho...
Bean Leafroller Caterpillars are a late summer visitor
Переглядів 523 місяці тому
Here in Central Florida, the Long-tailed Skipper butterfly visits beans and legumes in late summer to lay its eggs. The little green caterpillars that emerge from its eggs have a distinctive black head. They are easily spotted on the leaves, as they cut wedges along the edges of the leaves to fold over their tiny bodies.
Plumeria Rust in the Florida summer garden.
Переглядів 2673 місяці тому
Here in Florida, our hot, humid, and rainy weather make conditions ripe for Plumeria rust in the late summer. It turns the leaves yellow and brown, making a mess when they fall, and causes heartache in those of us who love and tend to our Plumeria like cherished friends. Ultimately it does not harm the plumeria, they still bloom, and new rust-free leaves will continue to emerge until the first ...
Sugar kettle garden fountain
Переглядів 733 місяці тому
An original cane kettle is hard to find, and I’m so excited to be able to enjoy this one in our yard. It still needs a little work, but the solar fountain I bought online is giving me the effect I want. I clean the filter once a week, it’s not difficult to do, and it even has a battery backup so the fountain works with some cloud cover. Eventually I hope to add some plants (I might buy a few fa...
How invasive is Creeping Oxeye in Florida?
Переглядів 613 місяці тому
Creeping Oxeye is on the invasive species list here in Florida, and for good reason. It spreads rapidly through runners and will climb fences to get out of your yard if you don’t keep it contained.
Devil’s Trumpet
Переглядів 3824 місяці тому
Devil’s Trumpet, also called Datura, makes large, beautiful flowers with relatively little care. Devil’s Trumpet is a prolific bloomer when grown in full sun. Each flower leaves behind a unique seed pod that contains dozens of seeds which are easy to sprout and make this a great plant for sharing. It’s a perennial in zones 9-11. Just be careful, all parts of the plant are toxic, so it’s best to...

How do you grow pineapples?
Переглядів 995 місяців тому
Don’t throw away the top of your pineapple! With a little effort and patience you can add this unique fruit to your garden. It’s going to take about 3 years to get harvest your pineapple, so if you live in an area prone to frost you’ll want to protect it during the winter. I find that planting them in plastic pots makes it easy to relocate them as necessary.
