Thanks again for watching, Although the performance is less spectacular than I would hope, I think there's atleast one or two good exchanges with each of my opponents. This was easily one of the most laid back competitive environment I'd been in while the fencing still maintained a high caliber Link to Ian and I's Book: www.lulu.com/shop/philippo-vadi-and-connor-kemp-cowell-and-ian-davis/wieldi...

music is 2 low.
Of all the songs in the world he chose this one 😅
Love your video, man! I bought your ebook and plan to get the physical copy for Christmas. Your videos have helped me a lot! The only French source about Vadi I’ve found is an old book from 2013, Vadi, l’art de combattre du spadassin. It’s generally good, but they got some stances wrong-for example, they interpret Posta Vera Fenestra like a "vom Tag." I’m part of a Lichtenauer club, and I’m the only one fencing Italian style. Do you have any tips for fighting against German fencers? 😄
Glad to hear you're liking it friend! The best thing you can do against RDL fencers is, well, fence them as much as you can! Your interaction within the system and their's is unique to each fencer with some general features that everyone within a specific approach agrees upon. So the best advice, more reps! Fence these folks as much as you can, the only real thing I would say is be careful of getting too too close, twerhau is very hard to deal with when they're spammed without really shoving the person's hands quite assertively. Stay safe, train well, have fun ⚔️
Why don t you redo this series in better production now?? Great work anyway, grazie
@Bermuda-e7f I certainly would like to! I'd like to finish off the series then come back to the first couple of parts, but given my recent move internationally, time is tight.
Thanks for the video. Pleasure to watch you fence
BEHIND THE HEAD WTF that was awesome
9:40 the press in, nice.
Nice work Connor!
Beautiful work
Loved the full vid too. Started to dig into Vadi in a "serious" way thanks your book and channel.
You do amazing until you attack without constraining your opponent or controllingthe middle line, then your rate of doubling goes up.
0:25 noice
00:23 is 🔥🔥
I concur; that was a thrust of absolute beauty :D
Looking great brother!
Nice thrusts !
Looking at the Vadi quote @5:21 that looks to me like it could be interpreted as multiple blows to one side via discordant + concordant, followed by a blow to the other side as appropriate... *squeal of excitement*
(mega watt lightbulb does off) So key difference is that the Mezzo tempo rotates behind their blade, while to rotare rotates in front of their blade... Also what you call a discordant action, I would call reverse hip where the direction of blow and direction of hip rotation are opposite. Using this for rotare / mezzo tempo is new for me, where I have found utility is to make multiple attacks on the same side by switching between Discordant/Concordant (or reverse/regular hip) attacks. This works well with both Madritto and Riverso (forehand and backhand). Anyway, I am loving this content (gone through it multiple times, taking notes etc) and I have ordered your book. Its amazing how well rotare and stramazone work with even minimal practice.
What's a Remise? I miss a second, third etc time?
@@jasonbaldwin273 A remise is when your first attack fails, and you immediately attack again. It's also called a renewal by a fair amount of folks
I missed something: "Posta di falcone is one of only 2 guards that doesn't have a (????).... Parry...? Pair...? Pear...? I assume pair, presumably meaning its only done on one side...?
@jasonbaldwin2171 You got it my guy, Posta Falcone is one of only two guards that doesn't have a pair, meaning it's only done on the dominant side
Nice fencing !
You’re holding the sword wrong. Right hand on top, left hand on bottom. Come on, you’re not a witch, are you? Good video, thanks for sharing some solid technique.
That move is the equivalent of don't even fucking try it
Really beautiful sparring. What mask overlay is the fencer in black wearing? It looks a great deal like the wukusi.
@MaudlinAntimony That would be the supfen plastic overlay, it is basically a copy of the wukusi, I'd reccomend it if you wanna keep your current mask, if you need a new one grab the wukusi
Where did you get the sheen/knee/leg guards?
@417hemaspringfieldmo they're fox motocross knees + shins, I bought them on amazon years back. Unfortunately, they aren't made anymore as far as I know.
@@Sinestrahema Yeah I got a pair lol....and yes I haven t been able to find them anywhere. I purchased mine back in Puerto Rico on a hobby shop.
this video/the fencing in it gets better the more times i watch it. It's up there with the martin fabian vs dustin reagan sparring footage imo
Amazing fencing! What feders are you using?
I am using a Sigi standard Maciej's feder is some type of Aureus, not sure which model
Thanks!
I really don't like fighting a left-handed fencer, feels like everything's messed up. I guess it takes more concentration and understanding of the sword to be truly effective.
Two of my favourite hema fencers fighting each other, is this a fan fiction?😭😭😭
1:26 transitioning through a kind of posta falcone on your stanco side to deliver that cut is very tricksy and cool i've been getting into Olympic saber; the way your opponent withdrew his sword from your cut and tapped you with the afterblow kind of gives me an appreciation for modern fencing's priority rules
My HEMA Hero.
Truly one of the GOATS
Holy shit I just realized your explanations line up with the beat of the background music
Hey guys, great video. Watching your sparing footage though I can't help but notice that a lot of times after you enter a grappling action you end end up standing, I think, a little too tall. Don't get me wrong, I think all of the stuff happening at the arms is solid and I'm definitely stealing those games but for my money when you have made up your mind to commit to a grappling action you need to lower your level by about 6 inches or if you are taller, to the level of the opponent's waist to just below that height. The reason being if you encounter someone who is also proficient at wrestling and is prepared to fight you on those terms standing that tall is going to make it very easy to get thrown. Sinking your weight lower in your stance (ideally having your hip height be lower than your opponents) is going to be an almost all purpose defense to counter-wrestling given the relatively short duration of most longsword exchanges. Granted there are some exceptions like if you are chasing someone who is retreating but generally I would say it's true that you can and should lower your stance more than I am seeing when committing to a grapple. Oh, and just so you I'm not talking out my ass I wrestled competitively for the better part of a decade, still coach the sport at the school level, still grapple when I'm not HEMAing, have instructed RIngen at my club and I'm also rated in the top 200 for longsword.
Hey there, thanks for watching. A couple of things: 1. This mini series is focused specifically on wrestling at the sword, throws will be talked about a little bit, but they're very much not the focus. 2. In counter wrestling at the sword, it's often a race to the top as the hands being higher leads to more options for the person with the hands above. 3. Games are designed to make the action that is being focused on the most likely to occur in the enviroment of the game's rules, not to simulate the whole variety of things that can happen in free sparring or competition. Throws aren't part of the games we played, Simple as. Again, thanks for watching.
return of the king <3

looking forward to more videos in this series!
wake up babe new hipster longsword video just dropped
You're so awesome, thanks for keeping my interest in swordplay for all these years. This info is also fantastic for writing accurate sword fights, showing how fast a fight can end, and would be great references for drawing fights too :0
Noice vid, as always :). Thoughts on ya right hand five fingered glove for longsword? superior fencing right?
1. For transparency I was sent a pair to review which I have finally gotten enough fencing time in to put in my clear perspective on. 2. They were sent with an overlay which is a great idea but needs to be bulked down in a couple of places to make them really good, the base glove is solid, the add on has to be slimmed for them to be feasible 3. I always have fenced with a 5 finger glove in the off hand, these are very good for that, and for fencing with 1 handed sword, they're my main recommendation for sidesword
@@Sinestrahema ok cool might have to check em out , cheers
Great video but the narration is very difficult to hear over the music lyrics at points
Thanks for the shout and for watching! ive just recently moved internationally so my set up is no where near as eatablished as it was in the states. I did my best to get it tuned up but not well enough it seems, this will be corrected in upcoming videos.
@@Sinestrahema I will absolutely be using some of these games. They're really good
your sword was bent! it's really noticeable in your match against Will Goodman
Yep I'm aware. A friend of mine jumped on my point while I was mid thrust and put a set in it a few months prior to this event, didnt change anything, sword still swords. I've seen gotten a new one, but a set ain't a bad thing.
Good work
Great job! I’m team andrew
Amazing fencing as always. As a lefty and vadi nerd you represent an ideal to aim for!
Congrats for your performance. Thanks to share. Great vídeo. Greatings from Brazil.
I have a question i wantto join your club and I wanted to know if you do coaching? And do you guys sword and buckler
Hey there! I will no longer be teaching at Philly Common Fencers guild as I am moving out of country, the club is in very good hands, i am not teaching formally anywhere yet, but i do not intend to stop teaching or making videos, just have to get settled first. At PCFG they teach longsword and sidesword, and I left the groundwork for the club to move on from sword alone to S&B, folks play snb regularly during the sidesword blocks already. Here's a link to the hema club finder to find folks near you and the club if you so wish to go to PCFG www.hemaalliance.com/club-finders
@@Sinestrahema awesome thank you so much I also wanted to ask since I just ordered a feder does the club loan gear during sessions?
@scpfoundation4717 Yes! there is club gear, I would reccomend following the link or heading to the links on my profile to get to the PCFG FB page.
12:44 lol *wiggle wiggle*
So many questions 1. Did you get a new jacket/gear? Where's the green? 2. No commentary on this one? 3. Why so much Donna and fendente? 4. Where's your iconic Vadi pose? 😂
1. Old Jacket that i finally found the right person to do necessary repairs and upgrades. The doublet was a stopgap and purpose built for my harness, which I had to sell for my move, unfortunately. But I will be getting a new harness done when I'm settled 2. I am very busy getting the last bits of my move squared away, I'm 12 days out from my one way flight and I don't have a lot of time to edit or voiceover as much as I would like to 3. The environment dictates the choices of guard, lots of newer fencers that clam up when they see something new and scary like fenestra/ frontal. The rota was getting used way to much, enough that it was a detriment to my performance, still gonna be there, but I intentionally made a return to form so to speak. 4. If you're talking about me bending the sword while I'm waiting for a match to start it was there, I just wanted these videos to be highspeed, low drag, get something out for folks. Let the fencing speak for itself.
I appreciated you checking on me around 6:45, btw (I was fine). :)
