I'm 56 yrs old and I love this "old school' footage anytime I can get it (NFL Films anyone?). I never heard of Hoyle Granger, 'sounding' like a B minus version of the great Earl Campell (if for some reason you haven't watch Campell's 'great runs' video ... best RB I ever saw...) who took too much of a beating averaging over 250 carries for 5 NFL seasons with the Oilers (Granger an Oiler too). Granger averaged about 210 carries a season for 3 years and he was , basically, done. Makes Campell's accomplishments that much more impressive. Earl played on unforgiving astroturf in Houston, too. Great video by SportsStatsNGab

I'm a Tom Landry-era Dallas Cowboys fan, since 1963. Paul Warfield without question was a great receiver. But IMO, Raymond Berry, Don Maynard, Lance Alworth, Steve Largent, and Jerry Rice are the greatest receivers in modern ('50s thru '90s) pro football history.🏈

Most of what you call "cheap shots" were permissible under the rules of the time. The game in the 1960s was much more violent. Clothes-lining, leg-whipping and horse collar tackles were all legal. Referees didn't throw the hankie nearly as much as they do today.

The 2008 Lions at 0-16 have the Oilers beat. Houston did lose three of their games by less than a TD that season. I think the 73 team was a bit worse statistically than '72, but they went 7-7 in '74 and '10-4 (not making the playoffs) in '75.

I was at the Rams 35-23 beat down of Don Coryell s ST Louis Cardinals in 1975. The Rams were all set to fly to Minnesota for the NFC Championship game when Roger Staubach threw a “Hail Mary to Drew Pearson who pushed off on DB Nate Wright Incredibly the referee called a penalty on Wright. Drew caught the pass and Dallas came to Los Angeles one week later and destroyed the Rams. We drove up from San Diego for the Cowboys VS Rams and wished we hadn’t!!! It was over before it started. I haven’t watched your “Gamebreakers of the 1970 s yet. I hope Harold Jackson is on your video. I’m not sure if Harold is in the Hall of Fame but this is just a guess he has more career Receptions and TDs than Lynn Swannand Cliff Branch and many other receivers who are in The HOF. Tom Fears had many former Rams appear in the 1979 film North Dallas Forty with Nick Nolte and Mac Davis. Fears was fired by the Rams ( I’m not sure if he worked for a NFL team ever again??? ) Many players who appeared in NDF were blacklisted by the NFL. Tommy Reamon and others But Danny Bunz who played Douglass did sign with the 4 9Ers and was instrumental in their 1982 Super Bowl win over the Bengals making 3 goal line tackles. The movie didn’t hurt the football careers of Louie Kelcher and Don Macek or John Matuszak.

Even though both my parents were quite racist, I never bought into it. Even when I was very young, the terrible things they'd say just made no sense to me. I always thought _everybody has a color, who cares?_ It's a shame, though, that Harris and the other early black QBs had to face all the B.S. they did. Literally _shame,_ on those who thought of or treated them badly.

@@6400az Carroll would go for a swim every morning at the same time. In his life he established routines which had served him well. He had devised a scheme of scalping tickets. Owners and teams would get an allotment of tickets. Rosenbloom was using the mob to scalp them. He apparently stiffed the mob on the proceeds of 1000 tickets for a Super Bowl. This amounted to a total of $1 million that he owed the mob. Davis stated he was always trying to get tickets and told the raiders owner at a previous SB that he had a guy who would make them a fortune. Davis denied and sold them to fans at gate price. So back to the 1000 tickets he had scalped and stiffed the mob. Folks on the beach seen a man yelling for help and reported seeing black objects popping out of the water grabbing him. They reported that two guys in wetsuits and air tanks dragged his body up to shore and said he was dead. One of the watchers was going to try CPR and the guys in the wet suit said to leave him alone he was dead in a threatening way. They then took off the tanks an and walked off down the beach. Rosenbloom’s son said it was foul play. Also the Rams went to his wife a dancer who ended up with the team while the children got very little. Several witnesses at the time but the cops seemed disinterested.

Very good topic. I think coaches had a very short leash in those days with the black QB. Any mistakes or poor interceptions were magnified by the fans and media. Harris was a big strong guy with a cannon. Doug Williams was in the same mold, but with Tampa spending a Number 1 pick on him, he had more latitude to make errors and still play. Harris also had some injury issues at inopportune times. He certainly was a groundbreaker and being on an outstanding team in a huge market paved the way for others. Excellent video Mark!

I still can't believe they traded him to the Chargers for Joe Namath. I wonder if he were still able to play in 1979 in the Super Bowl against the Steelers, Iwonder if the Rams would have played better.😮

Namath signed with the Rams after being waived by the Jets when a trade couldn't be worked out.

Without consistency at QB it's hard for any team to succeed. It was fortunate the Rams had an outstanding Defense and powerful Run game. But the lack of commitment to one signal caller might have been a factor in why the Cowboys and Vikings took turns knocking them from the post-season. I remember watching the Rams and Chargers in preseason games. Their colors were so similar it looked like a scrimmage. And how was Hadl player of the year in '73. Considering OJ Simpson should have been the run-away choice.

I think The Sporting News placed alot of weight on the Rams winning their division, whereas the Bills failed to make the playoffs.

They thought they had a deal for Archie Mannung, but it fell through, so they acted desperately with that Hadl trade.
