Thanks for the tips

Thanks for the feedback
OMG. This answered so many of my questions ive had for a very long time. thank you a lot !
Thank you for your comment, this makes me happy
So very cooool!!! Thank for sharing!!
Thank you!!
I just don't understand why you would create an entire separate track just for the looper when you can just put the looper on the same track as the instrument? I suppose the point of this is to loop more than one instrument at a time?
Good question. For me, I like to keep the input track separate from the looper track. It gives you greater flexibility. For example - if you wanted to change the volume of the looper - it’s easier as a separate track than using the level k ie inside. Or applying different effects. But as you say, using 1 track works as well
@@olivergearing thanks! I appreciate the response!
Thank you for this tutorial! Really great tips to make this workflow smooth. Question about the FCB1010 - I've heard mixed reviews saying that the pedal is very difficult to program... for this use in Ableton, did it require extra software or programming of the pedal itself? Or does ableton automatically read the midi notes and CC's and you just map those within abletons settings? Thanks!
You definitely need to program the pedal itself. At first it seems a bit unintuitive - but once you’ve got your head around it it becomes easy. The problem for me, when I bought the pedal, was that I didn’t understand MIDI data well enough. To be honest, that issue would have made any MIDI pedal difficult to use! Now I y seat and MIDI, and have invested time in learning how to program the pedal, I think it’s one of my favourite bits of gear
@@olivergearing Ok, that makes sense. Thank you for the reply! I appreciate it.
Thanks a lot for letting me known there is no looper plugin in Ableton live lite that comes free with some surface controler.
Anytime mate
Play it the right way
Yeah it’s a bit off
@@olivergearing hey man its alright your having fun and thats all that matters id like to see more of it
So brilliant! Starting from the beginning and gonna do some looping. I had a stroke and myloma a couple years ago but you’re helped me get back into Ableton looping again!
Thank you! Great to hear that you’re looping!
This is a solid and well-designed tutorial. Well explained.
Thank you!
I'm trying to map the FCB buttons but every button I press shows as PitchBend in the MIDI Mappings.
You might need to programme the FCB buttons to output MIDI notes. There are some really helpful guides on UA-cam, or you can get a software tool which helps you map
You are the only person explains this dramatically easy where I just exactly needed. Cheers mate!
Thank you for saying that! Good luck with the looper!
hi, thank you! i tried with a sustain pedal attached to a modx keyboard, but it does not work properly: 1) tha bpm of the project jump up to 999, 2)as the midi command of a damper pedal is from 0 to 127, and not an ON-OFF, there come a mess of un wanted things in the looper... much better if i assign a note to the virtual button, but works well with the hand, while i want to do it by foot!!! I cannot put the keyboard on the floor!!!! SOLUTIONS?????
There are always solutions my friend!! I use BOME midi translator a lot - this could convert the signal from pedal to (say) a keyboard press, or a MIDI note. I’ve got an offer code in one of my other videos (my secret weapon) - or you can try the demo version to see if it works
The most beautiful and good tutorial for this. I will try absolutely tomorrow!!!
Thank you! I hope it works out for you!
@ finally done! I am a beginner of this, now I have to learn how to use a pedal and how to save the project 🤪🤪🤪🎹🎹🎹
It's a really good song. They don't become standards without being intelligently constructed. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the comment - I agree wholeheartedly with you!!
I setup everything. But when I start looping. The sound starts to crash.
Oh no - I’m sorry to hear that. There are so many reasons why this can happen - I would advice updating everything to the latest version if you can - but this sucks!!
Damn! Just saw that this track got added to 'Rockin Hard or Hardly Rockin? | New Rock 2024' with over 42.8K Followers on Spotify!
That’s great news! Thanks for sharing!
Oliver the tutorial is amazing! I have watched it three times in a row already 😅. I have a 8 switch midi pedalboard and I have to adapt it to to my setup but I guess I can make it somehow. Just a quick question about the "performance track" : how do you create that one? Is the "reverb" track from Ableton? Because when I set the input and loop tracks to 100 send, every track has basically 100% reverb....what am I doing wrong? Thanks a lot!!
Thanks! The performance track is a send track - called a ‘return track’. I like to use these as a place to send all of the outputs of my input tracks. This means that on each of the looper and input tracks, they have the send level at 100% - but they have have their output as ‘sends only’. I find this gives me the maximum control - you can treat the performance track like an ableton track - add effects to it - and it keeps the Main output clean. Hope this helps - if not - comment back and we can get into the specifics!
So many talkings...bored
Sorry if it wasn’t for you ! Thanks for watching - you can find the chords written out in the description of the video if that helps?
Thank you! Great info!
Appreciate that! Thanks and enjoy looping!
ok so I’m wondering how to record all of this? say you’re doing a whole looping performance. How does it get captured? Looper doesn’t seem to record ?
It might be the monitoring settings for the channels. What I do is have an input channel - where I route my mic, or guitar into. This one I set as "In" in the monitoring settings. Then I route this to a second channel - with the looper installed on - then this is able to record the first channel
I just have an interface with 2 inputs. Is it possible to have the Main Mic and the Second Mic together or do I need an interface with at least 4 inputs? Thank you for your video!
You can definitely use this with one mic if that is your set up. Play around with the settings as you want to make sure you only record the microphone in the channels when you want it to!
I think that the beauty in what she's doing is that she actually had to play these herself. I'm not concerned if she uses some pre-recorded tracks for various reasons. I would think the same of many things. Though, I feel baited like an Astrum video here. 😆
Sorry about the baiting, it’s not something I’ve done much of before! Thanks for your excellent comment
Well done class setup thank you. Just wondering if you know how to stop the double press with my midi controller it’s driving me nuts 😂😂. My midi foot pedal set for cc for transport and need to press 3 times to stop and reset transport. Thank you 🙏
Thanks! Sounds like a classic MIDI foot switch problem. These things always seem to send more messages than you want them to. I have 3 potential suggestions: 1) buy BOME and use it as a filter - use the pedal to trigger then send exactly what you want through to your Ableton session. 2) check what exact messages the pedal is sending to Ableton - there might be more than one message. 3) check the settings in Ableton - make sure the the pedal is only set as ‘remote’ - maybe switch off ‘track’ and ‘sync’. If none of these work - sorry! It’s a bloody minefield!
Thought you were going to say: "This technique relies on really good video editing software." lol
Lol!!
In ableton lite 12...no looper :( which is the minimum version that embeds the looper?
Hey. Lite is a free version that comes with hardware, whereas intro is a paid version. I think that intro currently has looper…
thx boss is you not the pedal
Cheers mate!
it's great Oliver!
Thanks!
What a fantastic video. I’ve been scouring UA-cam for something like this but this was just perfect!! Thanks Olly! May you get that dream pedal someday!
Thank you! One day!!!
I am just starting to build my first live looping song and this video is gold. Helped me so much - thank you for putting out that information.
Thanks for the feedback! Good luck in your looping journey!
@@olivergearing Thank you!
@@olivergearing actually I have a question: maybe you already have a video on this. How do you handle record arming automation in ableton when doing live looping? For me i play multiple sounds with one keyboard for example and i don't want multiple tracks armed since I then hear the monitoring then from multiple instruments. I have started by midi mapping the record arm and triggering this from the midi trigger track - is this the best way?
@ good question. My technique was to have 1 track with an instrument chain - multiple instruments on it. I can change from (say) piano to organ using midi mapped ‘chain selector’. This way I left the channel on monitoring “in”, which meant I the keyboard was always triggering a sound, but I could select which sound using MIDI CC. Does that make sense?
@@olivergearing this is a great way to do this. Thank you for taking the time for writing that tip. Have a great day!
nailed it bro !'
Thanks for the comment!
Hello, I'm using MIDI instruments that each come with their own editor, but I'm unable to open the editor and use the instrument in Ableton Live simultaneously on Windows. This limitation is really impacting my workflow. Would Bome MIDI Translator Pro allow me to resolve this issue by letting both the editor and Ableton Live access the MIDI device at the same time? If so, could you guide me on how to set it up? Thank you very much for your help!
Hey, thanks for the comment. To be honest, I don’t know! The good news is you can try a free trial of BOME (I think) which should allow you to test this. My gut instinct is that it probably won’t work - I think the Ableton GUI stuff doesn’t get impacted by BOME but why not give it a try!!
nah it's called the Multi Purpose Transport Button
Such a great name LOL… I can’t get the words out!!
You lost me at 'Midi track" when recording live instruments

Nice concise video. One thing, windows does have a free virtual MIDI repeater/messager, it's called LoopMIDI
Nice one, thanks for sharing. I hope this helps viewers who are using Windows!
This is great! Thank you 😁 Could someone suggest the cheapest pedal I could get to use for this please?
I use the FCB 1010, which isn’t super expensive, but there are cheap options on most music sites like Thomann or Amazon
@@olivergearing Thanks for the response! Much appreciated 👍🏻
Thanks so much for the vid! I couldn't figure how to control the volume of the looper separate to the input. I might start using Ableton loopers instead of my RC-500 for live performances - still got to test it out for a whole band :)
Good luck! Looping with bands is fun but super challenging!! You got this
You were the only person who explained it properly and showed how to use computer keyboard to get this done! Thanks for that!
Thanks for the feedback!
extremely helpful, thank you so much!
Really glad it helped you!
what's that IAC stuff for?...I can just route my midi directly to the track with the looper, no??
It’s moved on a bit with Ableton 12, however the MIDI triggers don’t work from a MIDI track in the previous version.
yeah I already understood the concept watching a few more vids on this…thx!
Why doesn't it start recording once I press the pedal? I waits for 2 seconds or so and starts recording then. And it stops immediately when I press the pedal. NVM I figured it out. It's "quantization" set to Global. I turned it off and it's recording right away now.
Nice one. Playing around with all the settings is the way I work it out - it is surprising how many of the settings need tweaking to work ‘just right…!’
Cool video. To be clear and so that I understand, whenever a looper is recording they're all recording (i.e. adding layers) and all but one track is essentially layering "nothing"? I think I missed the point of the master looper track. Could you explain?
That is exactly it. It means you can control all loopers as though they are one. It was necessary so the 4 loopers with audio were completely independent, but controlled in the same way.
You can also do this in Reason without extra software - plus its a much more superior daw than ableton. the mapping can be done with two clicks of the mouse and one key push to map. Looping is also in the software...
Great! Hopefully this comment is helpful to the Reason users out there. I can’t agree that it is superior though!
Maan this channel is sooo good. So grateful for all the informations, Oliver!
That’s really great to hear! Thank you!
