this is so valuable dude!
Love this Oli - Well done for being what every teacher should be to a young mind........... Awesome, and he's a lovely musician! Shit bass though ;) That's a very english joke
Thanks! He is such a great artist!
That's so cool
Thank you!
George ezras voice is like marmite. You either love it or hate it
That may be true - but when the ‘like’ columns is millions of people, I’d take that!
Wally😂
I hope you’re talking about me, not George
OMG finally! I watched other videos that were so complicated and I KNEW there was an easier way… LOVE THIS! THANK YOUUUU❤🎉❤
I’m so glad I was able to help! Happy looping and I hope you have a lot of fun!!
Hey mate! I completley forgotten abou the looper in Ableton, been using clips in session view for far too long. Been thinking alot about my live set up for a while and whether to stick with hardware (rc600) or go software based. Just so much flexibilty with Ableton plus with a midi keyboard and all the plug ins I could use drums n EZ bass. ooooh the dilemma! Great video man, super handy and you explain things really well.
I still need a one mic solution though. Gotta be a way!
Hey mate! Thanks for the comment! There is a way if you have a volume pedal - you can clip between having the vocals feeding the looper, or not… I’ve definitely done this before but can’t remember the exact steps!
@@olivergearingActually I have an A/B box that would do a great job. I’ve thought about taking an APC40 out with me as well and go clip based. So many options for my tiny brain.
Fun to watch and easy to learn, I will be back for more. Thanks!
Thanks so much!
excellent video thanks for sharing!
Thank you! I’m glad you liked it!
@ kay I ask - weee you already familiar with hexadecimal midi messages or apple script or did you have to learn in order to achieve the shortcuts presented in the video?
@ had to learn it. I had heard of them, but never used them. A bit of trial and error plus many google searches!
Cool, thanks!
This is very useful, I'm currently mixing a MIDI song so these tips are just what I need. You didn't mention what reverb you added though, there are so many options so some guidance there would be great.
Thanks. It really depends on your project. I added Hall reverb at about 30% wet, but if it were mixing it into a track, I would use send buses. Room reverb and hall reverb. Room to make it gel and sit with the other instruments, and then hall to give it a grander vibe. As you say - so many options, but trust your ears - if it sounds good - it is good!
sweet thank you
Anytime! I hope it helped!
Right! Even if she was using some pre recorded sounds….who cares!? She’s an artist. She’s got it going on. I’ve been a huge die hard Todd Rundgren fan since the early 70s. He pioneered using pre recorded backing tracks for the first half of his live shows. (Reel to reel on the stage. )2nd half would be with his band Utopia. Totally smoking hot. Even later in the 80s he did a solo tour which featured a “cart machine”….it was awesome. Todd continues to innovate to this day. I would bet that Elise know who he is both fir his song crafting and his use of tech. Haza!
I’ve heard of this guy, I need to go and remind myself of his stuff! Thanks for the reminder!
Awesome video. I just subscribed today. My question is this…. In order to use the hands free technique it seems that you would have to completely nail down your song playing live and then go back to Abelton and mark those exact ques for record and play etc.? I really enjoy what your doing and how your doing it; breaking things down. I’ve been amazed at loopers first years and had seen her videos…..I think I just thought that she was a smooth pedal operator…. Cheers!
Thank you! Yes, you need to have a full arrangement worked out, with the exact moments the loopers start and stop, so it’s quite an effort to create each song, but once they’re created, you’ve got an asset!
Amen! Excellent words.
Thank you
Hi Oliver, Is this an update, or a re-upload of your former tutorial on this theme?
Apologies, I got a copyright strike due to music on it - so it is an upload of a prior tutorial
Super, I use your setup for more than a year now 💫🎸✨✨only difference is that I use a Softstep3 midi controller 😊
Would it not be better to use a foot controller to trigger obs?
Using a foot controller (or any button) is definitely a good method - however if you want things to move automatically in time with the music, this can help
I honestly don't see the benefit of this for my own purposes. But good on ya for those that can make use of it.
Thank you! There are so many great techniques and options out there. I appreciate your comments!
Great voice, Oliver, greetings
Greeting! Thanks for your kind words!
What do you think of the Ditto Plus and Sheeran Plus?
A friend has the ditto plus, he loves it. The pedals are really well made and just work. I need to get my hands on a Sheeran one though!
Wow! Thanks for the video and showing how to do various signal routing and things which we only need to know God bless. I look forward to checking out more more of your videos. Thank you so much!
Thank you! I really appreciate you stopping by, and please let me know if there are areas of videos that I could cover!
Can you make a video on how to replicate electric Guitar tunes on ableton?
Great idea! This hopefully would be useful for anyone looking to choose between Ableton Vs Logic etc!!
when any Artist gets 3 mill views on videos and has as much obvious support that she does 🙄 that in and of itself comes with that percentage within the greater amount that are going to be negative, that, then just looks big or unfair because of the high amount of subscribers. nout to do with misogyny
Very fair comment. Its hard to be so ‘broad brush’ in reasoning why people do things, and I was probably a little aggressive in my conclusion
This gives me early Marianas Trench vibes. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much! That’s a band I hadn’t heard of before! Just spent an enjoyable 30 minutes listening to their top tracks!
there is a little count in after pressing the rec button. How can i get rid of it? messing up my records all the time.
This will be the ‘global quantise’ setting - this defines how quickly it responds. I normally set it to 1 bar, meaning it starts recording (or stops) at the beginning of the next bar. You can use ‘none’ which means it reacts instantly
Will this work with Ableton Intro or do I need a more expensive version?
Should do, although I’ve never tested it myself (I have the full version). Not that if you have the ‘lite’ version you sometimes get with hardware (this is different to ‘intro’) this version doesn’t have the Looper, so won’t do it
Nu metal 😊
Amazing thanks! I never thought of that one!!
Amazing, thank you
Thank you, hope it was useful!
Great video… really useful. Thanks for sharing… I was wondering if there’s a way (of course there’s a way but I didn’t find it out) to set a button in my launch pad to momentarily shift all the pads to different midi channel (from Ch1 to Ch2). When releasing that button all the pads should go back to the original channel. Can you help? Thanks a lot.
Challenge accepted! I think you “note on” as the trigger for a MIDI translation from 1 to 2, then “note off” to end it is probably the way. You could use note on to trigger a translator to be active (with the MIDI code from my video) then note off to inactivate the translator. How does that sound?
@ thank you so much for your answer.. I’ll try this out and will let you know!
I found the solution mixing different techniques! Your instructions were the starting point so really really thank you! I used some rules to do it. First I wrote a global variable “g0=0” to define g0 as midi channel 1. Then I created a translator setting up a button in my launchpad as incoming message. The rule written to increment the channel by 1 was “g0=g0+1” with the condition “if g0>1 then g0=0” creating a loop (ch1 > ch2 > ch1 …). The button is a toggle but it’s ok! Last step was setting up the Note On and Note Off with couple of extra translators (incoming Ch=0 pp qq / Outcoming Ch=g0 pp qq). It works!
@ wow that is brilliant! I’ve not got my head round variables yet!
Thanks Oliver.. I only do simple live looping with a lot of tap dancing (on a voicelive3), I love ET and saw her play in Montreal - 'how' she does it was a mystery until you explained it 😊 - rock on brother! Thanks again ❤
Thank you so much for the comment! I hope your looping and tapping grows from strength to strength!
sounds fucking shite hahahhahahhahah
Cracking Tune Oli! I was bopping along immediately
Thank you Syke! I hope you are well?
@@olivergearingvery well sir. Great to see you're still putting out music. Haven't missed a beat. Great track.
Plz help, I cannot get the IAC MIDI channel to trigger the Looper. I can program C1 to start the looper recording, but if the song is playing / I hit space bar it doesn't register that midi note to start the looper. I've copied all the settings you've created and it's just not working for me. On a 2021 MacBook Pro M2 / Ableton 12 - Any help would be much appreciated. It all makes sense and would work great if I could just get this to work.
So sorry to hear that! Can you help me understand how you’re using the space bar? Are you using this to trigger a note? You need a separate MIDI track to play the notes (on channel 1), that trigger the MIDI that starts the looper…
OHHHHHH. Okay, I get it now, thanks!
Great!
This is brilliant…thanks for the breakdown. Wonder if it might be possible to rig this type of setup with Loopy Pro. Not that I could ever sounds as good! 😂
Thank you very much! I’m afraid I don’t know much about loopy pro - definitely 1 for me to look into!
@@olivergearing It's incrediby flexible and enlessly configurable. Anything can trigger a loop, so I wouldn't doubt it could be done. Version 2.0 dripping soon with even more features.
@@professordeb I’m intrigued! I’ll check it out
@@olivergearing Fair warning, there is a steep learning curve for this! But well worth it, and there are many great tutorials out there. Also, iPad only right now. Mac version coming in the near future.
@ cheers
Cubase user… I’m interested in abelton for song writing especially seeing videos where ppl casually walk around the room creating loops on different instruments.
They look very cool! I’m definitely less casual than them!
Good advice… I’m still struggling with some of these and other rules. 2 3 months per song ugh.
Thank you!
I'm having issues when trying to add a 2nd looper. I have the first looper is setup like a stomp pedal looper where it sets the tempo based on the loop just and that works fine. Now I want to add a second looper and I want it to start recording when the loop come back around and stop when I tell it to stop. This doesnt seem possible? It doesnt start recording when the loop comes around, it just starts when you hit the button and It mangles the audio to match the tempo. Is it not possible?
This sounds like the sorts of problems I had when I first tried to set these up. The ‘tempo control’ setting needs to be ‘follow song tempo’ and the ‘song control’ needs to be ‘none’. Quantisation should be 1 bar - which then means the looper starts and stops everything on the first beat of the next bar. Try those settings, see if it works?
@@olivergearing Thanks for the reply. I actually did get it working. I needed to set the fist looper (or master looper) to Quantization = none, Song control = Start & Stop song and Tempo control Set & Follow song tempo. Now that I have this working, I'd like to be able to use it in a live improv setting where I am often switching instruments but also switching which instrument starts the initial loop without a bunch of hassle, changing all the settings around and just using a single midi foot controller button press. Hopefully Im not dreaming :)
@ definitely possible mate! If you put a looper on a return or send track, then use the record arm coupled with auto monitoring on your instrument tracks, this might work
@ Sounds an awesome set up. Let me know if you get it flowing!
This comment is for those who are trying to use a sustain pedal 1. connect your keyboard 2.go the ableton settings 3.go to the " Link , Tempo and midi 4.turn on remote boxess (if that didn't work or wasn't there ) click the control surface, input and output and set it to your midi controller the video I learned from : ua-cam.com/video/iAaxuEl_X8Y/v-deo.html
Thanks for the tips
Dumb
Thanks for the feedback
OMG. This answered so many of my questions ive had for a very long time. thank you a lot !
Thank you for your comment, this makes me happy
So very cooool!!! Thank for sharing!!
Thank you!!
I just don't understand why you would create an entire separate track just for the looper when you can just put the looper on the same track as the instrument? I suppose the point of this is to loop more than one instrument at a time?
Good question. For me, I like to keep the input track separate from the looper track. It gives you greater flexibility. For example - if you wanted to change the volume of the looper - it’s easier as a separate track than using the level k ie inside. Or applying different effects. But as you say, using 1 track works as well
@@olivergearing thanks! I appreciate the response!
Play it the right way
Yeah it’s a bit off
@@olivergearing hey man its alright your having fun and thats all that matters id like to see more of it
So brilliant! Starting from the beginning and gonna do some looping. I had a stroke and myloma a couple years ago but you’re helped me get back into Ableton looping again!
Thank you! Great to hear that you’re looping!
You are the only person explains this dramatically easy where I just exactly needed. Cheers mate!
Thank you for saying that! Good luck with the looper!
hi, thank you! i tried with a sustain pedal attached to a modx keyboard, but it does not work properly: 1) tha bpm of the project jump up to 999, 2)as the midi command of a damper pedal is from 0 to 127, and not an ON-OFF, there come a mess of un wanted things in the looper... much better if i assign a note to the virtual button, but works well with the hand, while i want to do it by foot!!! I cannot put the keyboard on the floor!!!! SOLUTIONS?????
There are always solutions my friend!! I use BOME midi translator a lot - this could convert the signal from pedal to (say) a keyboard press, or a MIDI note. I’ve got an offer code in one of my other videos (my secret weapon) - or you can try the demo version to see if it works
The most beautiful and good tutorial for this. I will try absolutely tomorrow!!!
Thank you! I hope it works out for you!
@ finally done! I am a beginner of this, now I have to learn how to use a pedal and how to save the project 🤪🤪🤪🎹🎹🎹
It's a really good song. They don't become standards without being intelligently constructed. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the comment - I agree wholeheartedly with you!!
