Surfing Nipple Rock Jersey in Surfskis
No wind today but a bit of swell so took the ski out to a reef in St Ouens bay. Was quite a tricky take off and the ride was seriously bumpy but a whole lot of fun, my longest ride was 192 metres hitting 15 mph

30knts of wind Sunday 29/09/24

Had to come home from France early as the ferry had to sail before wind got too strong so managed to get in a cheeky Downwind, as always the video doesn't show how much fun paddling with 30 knts of wind behind you really is.

Noirmont is a Tide Race that with the right conditions provides loads of fun on a surfski / Ocean Ski. Longer Vid than normal but it was so much fun
Jim from Yorkshire does Surfski for the first time ever

Jim asked if I'd take him out, so I did. It might have been a bit more than he was expecting and as always the camera flattens it out. tide and wind were against us on the paddle out and the wind was 25knt with stronger gusts. We might catch more bumps next time if Jim puts his paddles in the water a bit more

Short DW on the Epic Surf Skis, our coastline is very rocky so we have to get the tides right to ensure there is enough water over the rocks.

David has never kayaked before so I took him out in an Epic V8 double. it's the first time I've had a swim from this boat. As always the camera flattens the bumps and doesn't show the wind strength we were paddling against.

Robin has only ever paddled a SOTP before so this was totally new and very narrow for him. It shows what a great boat the Epic V8 double is for introducing people to the fun of a surf ski. It was a small tide with about 15 mph of wind against tide which helped to push up some small bumps to play on

Heck yeah, Tim. Great conditions, great runs, what a blast! Nice video music too
Nice Tim, La Bajeta - I'm jealous, but better you guys than letting those waves go without anyone surfing them...
bloke at the back looks like he is making bloke in front do all the work! looks like that jim bergerac from jersey
He tried to tell me he was working hard, he was certainly red in the face and puffing a lot at the end.
Hi Tim! I recently bought the board and I have found that in rough water it is not very stable, but it holds very well in flat water, it is very fast. What feeling did you have when you tried it? Thanks for the video demonstration, greetings.
It isn’t as stable as a hard board but I didn’t find it too bad.
I love the paddle facing the wrong direction lol
Wow. This remins me - did a short sprint during a training with a younger bloke in a very fast ski lately - he had 2 boat lengths on me 100m shy of the finish but tipped over. He was back in the ski so fast that I still had a hard time winning the race. Would have loved to see his remount on video too.
Dang, I was expecting a tandem Eskimo roll…
David (formally known as Dave) is awesome!
With my Maliko 14x 26 x 7½ I surfed 22,5 kph on a small wave in downwind. In two weeks I first reached 10 ,then 11 and finally 12 knots . 12,14 knots exactly. Now I want 13 knots.
It might be an older design but its still a great board
I think Naish found the best compromise on this Maliko 14x26 2023 . The new 2024 model has more rocker and a little more volume at the bow. I would like to demo the Maliko 14x23 .
Hi Tim, first of all, thank you for sharing your videos. Can compare the performance of the Epic V8 Double from the Carbonology Boost Double? Which of the two do you prefer to paddle? Thanks
Hi. Thanks for viewing. The V8 is definitely the more stable boat however you can feel that extra stability when trying to get speed on flat water. There again it was built for the bumps and is certainly the boat I take total novices out in. In the lumpy stuff the boat is great and inspires a lot of confidence, we paddle in a lot of confused water. The Boost is also very stable but feels more tippy with good secondary stability. it glides much better on flat water as you would expect with a narrower longer boat. on the confused water we get it can be a bit of a handful due to the length and waves coming from more than one direction acting on the rear when the front is down a bump.
Thank you for sharing your opinion. Stay safe on the water @@fraggle48

Outstanding, where was this filmed, Australia? Brilliant music as well!
Filmed in Jersey, Channel Islands.
Epic
This is awesome!
Awesome
You're mad! 😁
Very possibly
I checked the credits and got your location! The Isle of Jersey. I imagine that there are some wicked tidal currents there! Does Gonepaddling rent surfskis? I wanted to check their website but my computer insisted that I don't. Renting of surfskis seems to be fairly rare.
Hi Joel If you were coming over here I am sure GonePaddling would sort you out. Their webpage is out of date but you can get them on Facebook
Awesome remount
Nice remount! 😶🌫
U guys flipped him😂😂😂
Yup 🤣
Awesome. Look at the smile on her face😎
This is not sea miles? When you are on the sea you must speak in knots like sailors,,,terrestral speed means nothing for me. 11 mph is 17,699 kph or 9,55 knots. Great speed. On my inflatable Starboard Tikhine Wave here in Thailand 16,8 kph = 9,07 knots
Having just purchased a stellar Falcon in the alpha layup...videos like this make me cringe LOL . looks like you made it in unscathed.
we all made it with no scrapes, a few of our DW runs involve sketchy exits as its a very rocky coastline here. Enjoy your new boat
Hi Tim. I want to get into surf ski and would appreciate your advice as to how to choose between rotomould v5 or v7 as they are the same price. Any help appreciated
If you can try them both then do. If you just want to potter about the V5 might be ok as wide and very stable,if you want to go any distance and get any speed then the 7, the 5 is a bit of a barge. If you can afford an 8 or something similar width in composite then go for that as so much lighter and quicker than a roto molded boat
Salió bueno?
Hi Tim I saw this video when you made it and have just discovered your other videos on the V9 - good to see as there doesn't seem to be much info from users on this ski. (I'm looking to buy a ski, have paddled a V8 on small waves, a V8 Pro and V10 sport on flat water and a V7 on a proper downwind run in Fuerteventura - the latter seemed very sluggish. I have many years sea kayaking and with rudders) I guess you'd recommend the V9 ? I would use it to train on flat water and have fun in the sea - no competition aspirations)
Hi Jules. I love my V9. If you aren't looking to compete to be honest the V8 is a great boat and so stable in all conditions, there are times that I wish I was in a V8 when conditions get a bit confused. The guys here in V8s are generally as fast as me (I'm not a very fast paddler) the V9 does perform well when the DW conditions are good and is more agile on the bumps. I had an 8 pro and find the 9 more stable. its a hard choice but remember you won't be going quickly if you are wasting strokes on keeping yourself upright.
Wow, such great fun. You didn't lose your cool and the waves rewarded you :) The V8 did its job too👌
The V8 Is such a stable boat when it does go a bit wrong and so good for taking novices in some bigger stuff. For me it’s about having fun and I’m not worried about going fast 😁
@@fraggle48 I mostly agree with you, though going fast is fun on its own, and, more importantly, you can catch more waves. I'm on a Carbonology Boost myself, so not that far off, and easier to get here in Gran Canaria.
Tim, Noirmont is a tidal race, right? Are these waves wind driven against the tidal direction? We have a powerful local tide race that we paddle when the wind is blowing against the ebb tide here that tends to start out with a lot of big, steep crossing waves then eventually changes to smooth rollers toward the end of our race - similar to the ones in your video - great waves and lots of fun in your video!
Hi Paul, yes it’s a tidal race and works best with a bit of wind against tide. It can work with no wind as well depending how big a tide it is. Sounds like it’s pretty similar to yours in wave formation
Muy bueno
Epic is clearly top of line boats. However too much FUD on tippy. They cost so much a working man can’t say: I’ll start w the V7 then upgrade. Too expensive to do that! Any input?
Yes they are expensive. Unless you want to race flat water then a V8 is a boat that does pretty much everything pretty well, so no need to upgrade. If you have good balance then a V9 does it all but better than the V9, I am happy with with mine and have no aspirations to be a fast racer, just enjoy paddling on bumps
𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐦 😩
Tim, can you give a bit more explanation? Kirton's website says nothing about shape differences. Is it differences in the finish and fittings or an actual difference in hull shape?
The tail is a different shape and the rudder is a little further forward
@@fraggle48 and this is comparing the same generation of V8s?
@@paulreavley5900 yes as far as i am aware. if you give me an email or FB i will get you some pictures
Epic downwind running. Very jealous!
Can we somehow build an affordable lightweight Ski that's totally resistant to rock damage?
Not sure why you would take a surf ski into that situation? As Paul says, it’s plastic kayak territory.
You think I intentionally parked on a rock? Did you read my reply to Paul? As the majority of our coastline is rock with outlaying reefs these things happen sometimes
@@fraggle48 I think that you might have missed my point. Surf skis are designed to be stiff and inflexible for better wave riding and hence not effective against impact - e.g. rocks. I would therefore never take my surf ski anywhere near rocks, no matter what the conditions. If the conditions are such that it necessitates getting so close to rocks, then better to bale out and go home or fight it out in the open water.
@@SeaShanty2016 I'm glad you have the luxury of not having to paddle near rocks when you do a down wind, unfortunately we don't here. Thank you for enlightening me on the design and vulnerabilities of surf skis, I'll bear that in mind next time I'm paddling near rocks.
@@fraggle48 To assume that I don’t have to contend with the same dangers like rocks etc simply because of my comments is somewhat naive. I grew up on the west coast of South Africa and if you have ever been near Cape Point, Millers run, Saldanha bay etc you would have noted that we do actually have rocks, high winds and heavy seas. One of the basics we learnt was stay the hell away from rocks under all circumstances, especially when there are heavy seas. If you miss your small beach or calm exit point tough luck, go on until you find another spot. If you don’t have any safe exit points along the route, then why the Dickens are you using a surf ski. The point is that surf skis cannot be bailed out like kayaks and also do not have buoyancy compartments like kayaks. If you hole your ski or send your rudder through the hull you are in really deep trouble in that situation - Your only option is to leave the ski and try to clamber up the rocks? I have tried towing someone with my ski and it is not practical for more than a few metres in heavy seas. Also trying to paddle a long ski without a rudder in rough water is almost impossible.
Nearly went from bad to worse
the glare made it invisible, my assassin would probably take water in after an impact
I was lucky, when I cleared it I jumped in the check the hull as I was expecting some severe damage. Very relieved. The bailer was scraped up quite a bit
That was a sea monster!
Good to know that the damage wasn't too bad. Looks like you were venturing into plastic boat territory there, Tim. There are some pretty significant tide swings in Jersey, right? We have a local lake where the water level changes somewhat seasonally and it has some slightly submerged posts that are notorious for bending rudders back, impaling the backs of our surfskis.
Yeah some pretty big tides, there was a big swell running and we had tucked in for some shelter as DW hadn’t gone as planned
Tim - looks like rockin conditions to me... Do you carry a radio primarily to communicate in the group or is there rescue service readily available around Jersey?
Hi Paul We carry them for both reasons. We are fortunate to have the RNLI here who provide an excellent service if it is needed.
Even legs out wouldn’t have helped here.
Awesome!
Try and counter the huli by placing your paddle on the right side of the OC1 by pressing down on top of the water with the front blade of the paddle.
No neck
I am interested in learning how to paddle a surf ski. I do want a stable craft and I was wondering how the epic V8 would be for someone has never paddled. I do want to start at the bottom of skis but the ski I buy that will be it for along while. My plan is start in the ocean in Fort Lauderdale and learn paddling just past the breaking waves. I can except failing ...but I dont want a ski I can never get the hang of. I guess the bottom line is to be able to be in the rollers like you are in this video
Starting out having never paddled, the first thing I would suggest is some lessons to get the basic strokes, especially support strokes and also learning how to get back in. The V8 is a great starter boat and we have several people here who weren't paddlers but are progressing using the V8. There are of course other stable boats out there from other brands
Try several kayaks and stable boats first, V7 and lower
Haha... i had my first surf this week, I had the same expression on my face. Such an awesome feeling!
Nice! Beautiful water.
So cool! A really nice ride!
