What program do you use to log with a Mac?
@@Sercall78 I use RumLog. It’s free and has everything you need for everyday logging as well as contesting. I highly recommend it.
@@W0ABE I use runlog but I don't know how to configure to skcc.
@@Sercall78 for SKCC specifically I use the scripts below. I end up loading contacts back to SKCC logger to track status - gist.github.com/swalberg/6ba5b89924f6a6a40f713e4b260ae731#file-get_skcc

@@Sercall78 yea, at the end of the day you don't gain much using RunLog. I would recommend downloading SKCC Logger from the SKCCLogger User Group on groups.io to save yourself some headache. I believe you have to request access to join the group.

Nice. I better relearn my Morse code. And get a radio licence. Vais when the wold is gonna go to shits. This is Gina be the only way to communicate long distance
Man, I don't know how you do that! I can't change speed that easily and not make a complete mess of my sending (granted, my sending is usually a mess anyway lol). Great job.
It was a fun challenge. I drop plenty of dahs at 17-19 WPM. Next one will be 25->17. I’m guessing descending speed will be much harder.
Tnx for Q at 2:14 ;-)
That was fantastic. Went from calm to challenging to copy.
You had a good run What’s the key you’re using ??
Im using the Cw Morse camel back key.
@@W0ABE nice. Looks _comfy_ I finally got a “real” J38 and have been loving it. I had a cheap Japanese one. Even though it had the ball bearings, it wasn’t as nice as the old USA made thing. I’ll keep an ear out for you. I’ve only got 40 and 20 at the moment, but I guess I can see what it can tune. 73 DE VK2NAP dit dit
@MidlifeRenaissanceMan I’ve been on the lookout for a nice J38. I’m planning to get back to SKCC activities. Hope to catch you on the air! 73 de WØABE
@@W0ABE so many nice keys out there, but it’s harder to find one that’s reasonably priced and taking into account the cost of shipping to the antipodes, it’s insane. I picked up an old PMG post office key from before WWII and though it was $20. It set me back another $22 in shipping fees. Now he did list it as pick up only, so standard I threw another $20 to cover his half an hour or so stuffing around at the post office. $65 got me a chunk of brass on an old chunk of not very special timber. That said, it belonged to his old man who was a ham. He has no interest in it and the spring and spring adjustment screw is missing. I’ll get it going and get a new board made for it. Give it some love. It will see the airwaves again
Love how your field radio is a full size rig. Everyone else has Mountain Toppers, QCX Mini and 891s and you're like "Do you even lift bro?"
I still regularly use my FT-891 but the 710 is so fun to operate. I’m in for the pileups so no shame in a nice big rig!

TNX! Looking fwd to another QSO!
Beautiful Country. I spent 18 or so years on the West slope of CO in the Delta county/Mesa County area. I miss the high country. I spent some time living on the side of a mtn working fence line and playing radio at the end of the day, while listening to Elk and coyotes at night and being visited by a flock of Turkey in the morning, and a big ole porcupine under my camp trailer stratching his back on the undercarrige of my camp trailer. Camp Robbers and humming birds paid regular visits. Thanks for sharing- kc2bkm
Sounds like the ideal setup! It is nice out wet. Thanks is for watching. Hope to catch you on the air! 73 de WØABE

How do you have your paddies set up? I have to hit mine hard to make contact. I have the same set of paddies.
I have the screw in the back theft side backed pretty much all the way out. I turn the 2 screws that control sensitivity all the way in until I they make contact and then back them out 1/4 turn or so. You might check the 2 nuts that connect the paddles to the base? I’ve been very happy with the paddles. I wouldn’t say the same if I had to bat them around to send.
I just noticed that my key is not the same. I only have two screws to adjust. I do not have the second one on the left side. Maybe it is time to upgrade. Thanks@@W0ABE
@denniskimrey4129 Upgrading never hurts :) GL!
Holy smoke, a massive pile up the entire activation ! You sure you’re not at a highly remote DX location 😅! Thanks for posting.

Great pileup action. Enjoy watching your videos om. Are you into CW Contesting? 73 es HNY de N4AAJ

@W0ABE same here. You're kicking butt. I have a group of contesting friends who have helped me participate in a few of the major contests and I'm hooked! I'm working to improve speed and accuracy to get to where I want to be. Couple of the guys have been contesting since they were born. They make it look easy! Great videos for practice. FWIW, if a viewer needs to QRS they can slow the playback speed in the UA-cam settings.

Great to see and hear the other end of the QSO...you always do a fb job of handling the pileups. What are your thoughts on the FT-710? K9ABR
Thank you! It’s always great to get you in the log. So far I like the 710. Its the POTA equivalent to glamping. Fewer menus and more buttons make operating much easier. I need to spend some more time with it but so far no regrets. Thanks for watching!

Where did you find the piece of metal on your clip board?
At the hardware store. It’s a tie plate attached with some heavy duty mounting tape. Works great!
Is that a DX 10? How do you like it? I'm looking to buy. Some say the relay is a bit noisy. I don't hear it in your video.

Any logging advice? Congratulations on the centurion award!
Thanks! SKCC is fun 🤩. I don’t think I have a lot to add as far as logging goes. For general logging I have only used RUMLogNG. It’s Mac only, free, and does everything you need. I don’t have any experience with any of the windows logging software. I know there are a ton of options. SKCC logger is great. At the end of the day all my contacts end up in RumLog.
What's that
What keyer are you using? As a beginner CW, is it best to learn single characters at first before learning 3 in a row such as REA? Like/subscribe/Bell
No keyer. Im just using a straight key and the FT-DX10 and not transmitting. Everyone learns different so find what works for you. I found it effective to learn 3 letters at a time. This is what the Long Island CW Club does with the carousel class. You learn three and add three more.
@@W0ABE Sorry, I meant what is the make of your straight key
CW Morse camel back key. cwmorse.us/collections/camel-back-keys
Does LICW have you learn all the characters first before learning how to practice sending or they have you do both at the same time? I think I read somewhere that LICW doesn't require a straight key in the beginning.
I don’t believe they require a straight key. The classes I attended to learn the character do not require you to send. It is helpful to send as you learn.
Great stuff! DE W4EMB. I saw 3 other LICW guys in there. W8SOO, WZ5MM, and K7DUG.
Thank you! Always great to get LICW folks!
I got my cw key in. Still haven’t found an elmer though.
Awesome on the key! Were you able to get wired up and working?
@@W0ABE no. There is three wires. Tip, ring and sleeve.. I think I use the tip and the sleeve. I don’t know how to make it work with my radio. Still haven’t hooked up the mic because I’m worried something is set up wrong and I will mess up the radio. I did see your call sign on the pota web page and tuned in for a while.
You are correct in tip and sleeve. I believe you can attach ring to the base of the key or just let it float in space. I would always be wary of advice I got from someone on the internet 😀. I would throw the question out to LICW groups.io. Those folks could probably provide a solid answer.
Being wary of internet advice would be the reason my mic hasn’t been hooked up. I will keep learning cw and studying for extra and hopefully someone locally will get back to me about an Elmer.

I could hear most of it on my radio. Hopefully one day I will be able to understand it.
You will. I remember that feeling. You seem well on your way. Looking forward to a QSO!
How you like the new(?) key? I joined the Long Island cow club today and they recommended that company.
Welcome to LICW! I got the CW Morse key last week. I like it a lot. They are 3D printed so I don't think you want to leave them in your car on a hot summer day but It's hands down the best bang for your buck. I would recommend it.
Should have I bought a key before I attend the introduction classes tomorrow or is that something they will cover in the introduction class? I don’t know the difference between with and without magnets.
They will cover it, but you should be fine. They do recommend starting with a straight key.
@@W0ABE they hold the key to the metal on the clip board and the metal you have fastened to the desk? The magnets.
The metal on my desk and clipboards are lumber straps. They cost about $1.50 from the hardware store. Attach with screws or heavy duty mounting tape. Works great for keys with magnets.
