A true rarity for The Twilight Zone, an episode that is heartwarming and with a happy ending. Rod Serling definitely put all things aside for the Christmas season when he made this one.

Art was a real life alcoholic and suffered mental illness all of his life. His portrayal is so good because it came from a real place within him.

One of the very few with a happy ending, such a heartwarming wholesome tale to bring some humble joy. Even if you don't like spooky stories or uncomfortable endings, at least watch this episode.

One thing that struck me about this episode was that it was made on videotape as opposed to cine-film. One of six episodes to be made in that format that second season. It was a cost saving measure where the episode was then transferred on to film & the tape used again for another episode. It was unpopular with viewers & was dropped completely when season 3 came along.

Sobering Thoughts Quite a touching and sentimental episode. However, I wonder what the sponsors and perhaps the AA's thoughts were at the time; or even what Christians may have thought about how a non Christian writer treated their good ole Santa? Santa starts out drunk, goes to meet children when he's still stoned drunk, and falls flat on his drunken face in front of them. When he's at the police station he is confronted by his department store manager who had previously berated him for his drunkenness. So, to prove that Santa is indeed drunk and insane he asks Santa for something so dear to him (the manager) and precious that he knows Santa can't produce. And what is that? Booze! Santa's last gift is booze. 1902 rum or something. Now the manager gets juiced up, and just after firing Santa for drinking! The episode starts with a drunk, then one of the most prized gifts (and given) was alcohol, and ends with a new drunk in the snowy streets taking it all in----the joys of Christmas.

Were you alive when this episode was new? I was. Carney's portrayal was a fair representation of many of the men whose lives were forever changed by World War Two. Unable to deal with what is today called PTSD, they tried to wash away the horrors of war in a sea of alcohol. Carney's Santa Claus clearly wanted to atone for something that caused him to be the man he was. The miracle is that he got his wish and perhaps some measure of redemption for what he'd done. If I had to guess at what happened that sent him down Whiskey River it would be that he was haunted by having accidentally taken the life of a child, probably around Christmastime.

At least Rod Serling agreed with Megyn Kelly. Santa IS white. As Megyn says, it is a historical (or would that be hysterical) fact.

something I just found out; co-stars Michelle Trachtenberg and Lacey Chabert each played a character named Penny in a lame big-budget film adaptation of a TV show when they were younger: Lacey in "Lost in Space" (1998) and Michelle in "Inspector Gadget" (1999)
