How we play Collection Connection:
1. The Connection part: Connections can be made through any common trait, whether deep or superficial, shared with the album shown in the previous episode of the game. Overly-broad connections (i.e. "this album is also a motion picture soundtrack'"; "this album also came out in the 1970s"; etc.) are discouraged, because they're so lame.
2. The Collection part: We must own a copy of the album we're showing. Any officially-released physical format is valid, as long as it resides in our personal collection. (In other words: downloads, mix tapes or streaming do not qualify.)
3. We talk about the two albums we're connecting, and ask you to figure out the connection. Leave your guesses in the comments. First right answer gets a shout-out in the next video.

Listened to the album on Spotify. Funny it doesn’t have “Love Fool” in the tracklist. But I do have that song on another album.
@@plasticsoundwavecult Of course, it was the fact that it was on that other album that it was a hit. I could have mentioned that when I brought up the song (the success of which is most likely why the US label decided to repackage a version of their Emmerdale album) but “Lovefool” was only ever on the follow-up to Life, First Band On The Moon.
But this time: both albums include black sabbath cover versions.
While I was editing, I noticed I did a lot of mentioning of Japan, and I think, in fact, it would be correct to say each of the albums were only initially released in their home country and Japan. So I would have taken that as a connection too, but the Black Sabbath was the intended answer. A point for you!
@@murdockreviews Nice job.
Dang. Had an idea concerning the connection but forgot to post my guess under the monday video.
nice collection bro
Thanks. And thanks also for watching!
I really like your take on Yazoo and the brief history of Vince Clark. Except for the one song.
@@plasticsoundwavecult Thanks. I can’t believe how long this one ended being.
Any clue? I get it can become a bit frustrating keeping up a tight schedule with only modest views/feedback. But i'm glad you will continue. I will also slow down the output on my own channel (also due to workload and changing jobs).
@@murdockreviews The early clue would be that I individually mentioned the connective tissue in regards to both bands. So it wasn’t a case where I mentioned half of it, hoping someone might infer it applies to both bands. I never thought we’d be big on UA-cam, but I did think it might gather momentum over time where each video might reliably see views in the hundreds. It’s okay that it hasn’t happened, but I feel like I’m rushed each and every week with that two-day turnaround, and in the last two weeks I had to do each one on Wednesday (and Eric’s videos come out in the evening on Monday for me on the East Coast) due to busy Thursdays. I approach it with less of a sense of fun, more of a sense of duty. I think the new schedule will help bring the fun back.
The clues were there. Yeah I’d like to branch out a bit and talk about some of the things I find interesting about unusual album covers, marketing, colored vinyl, etc. though it it’s mostly about the music, there are certain things that only a CD can pull off, or only a record can pull off. Hopefully others find them interesting too.
No idea the connection… unless it’s self-referential song titles? Seems to easy… 🤔 That Veronica Falls album was one of my favorites from 2011. Top 5, easily. Unfortunately, their follow-up didn’t do much for me. The band members will lead you down a fairly extensive rabbit hole of more music and band projects. But, yeah, an incredible debut. Glad you know it! ✌🏻
@@TheDigitalGramophone I think that’s close enough for the point-it was more specifically that the band name is in the lyrics, which, you’re right, isn’t a dazzlingly clever connection. I had to make this on Wednesday for a an album I got handed on Monday, so I went with the first viable connection that came to mind. I think I learned of VF by looking at Allmusic’s ‘similar to’ list of bands for Alvvays, maybe after their first record, when I wanted more stuff in that vein. I definitely didn’t hear it until a few years after it came out, though. I got the second much more recently, but I have enjoyed it. More polished, which is the direction these things always go in, but still some pretty fun pop music.
I agree in one sense it isn’t political, but A-NL music seems to be much more self service. If there are any political rendering of this album it’s about free speech. In a way, the quotes from certain people that denigrate this music as the fall of civilization were not actually civilized people. Especially with a comment from Jimmy Saville. I realize that are some people who should have their opinions discounted heavily. Especially when it comes from the perspective of morality.
@@plasticsoundwavecult The irony of those who feel they represent the moral high ground, who want to point fingers and accuse others of depravity.
It’s like it’s my birthday. Funk and Punk. I have Gang Of Four on a couple of comps. Interesting take on funk. I know you like more heady music; things that make you think. Though funk can have those elements, it’s aimed less at your head as it is at the body. The reason why I love funk is I just can’t sit still when I listen to it.
@@plasticsoundwavecult It hits me a little like classical, in that it sounds great when paired with visuals, like movie soundtracks, but on its own it leaves me wanting more.
I'll just throw a dart in the dark here and guess that both albums use traditional Indian instruments.
@@murdockreviews That’s it. Not the most precise connection, so I was prepared to accept anything along those lines that mentioned India, whether it was the heritage of the bandleaders or the blending of Indian music into western music, or the use of Indian instruments.
I think the "homework" album I was listening to was Supergrass. Just like how Spotify led me to Elephant Stone by going into suggested music, they came up Supergrass after listening to the Cornershop album. And somehow that feels like it's come around full circle. I thought this was the first time I've listened to Cornershop, but alas... I'll talk more about that in my video on Monday. I did enjoy this album. "Butter The Soul" had a great hip-hop groove going on. Even the following track had a similar vibe.
@@plasticsoundwavecult Maybe I’ll find an opportunity to play some Real Estate on an episode of CC. I think you’d like them.
That really takes me back. The Fatboy Slim Remix was a huge dancefloor hit in Europe in the late 90s. I loved it. Cornershop as a band, though, were always pretty hit or miss for me. As you mentioned yourself, it often feels halfbaked.
@@murdockreviews I think I vaguely remember learning in the past ten years that the remix was the familiar version to European audiences, but that memory only got knocked loose by doing my research. But I don’t think I’d ever heard it before yesterday.
@@GSPonsonby one of the few CD singles I ever bought.
Been listening to this album. You were right, very interesting album.
10,000 Hz Legend might be my favourite Air album. 'Talkie Walkie' is their most popular one after 'Moon Safari' and recommended. I agree that 'Pocket Symphony' is not as strong.
@@murdockreviews I did let 10,000 Hz Legend play right after I played Moon Safari (just continuing through my iTunes library), and the song “Radian” caught my ear in a way it hadn’t ever done before. Slow beginning, but the last half has some of that Moon Safari quality.
@@GSPonsonby Yes, it's a gorgeous track. '10,000 Hz Legend' always felt a bit like Air's "prog" album to me.
thats cool with the connection, bryce! im never good at the connections half the time!
Eric actually came up with the idea (I figured out which album to use for it). I was going to use an album with a song called "Leave Me Alone" on it, but it didn't seem very inspired.
I guess both albums use color/symbol codes to depict the title on the front covers? I've got the Shout Out Louds album (or rather my wife) - haven't listened to it in quite a while.
You broke my streak of about 5 straight weeks without so much as a guess. Yes, it's having the band and album title encoded in the artwork.
@@GSPonsonby yay. Hope you're having a great weekend.
It’s weird, the YT software isn’t picking up my thumbs up. Listened to Shout Out Louds. It’s was a pretty good.
@@plasticsoundwavecult UA-cam sees what’s in your heart. It won’t allow you to leave a thumbs-up that you don’t mean.
It will be interesting to see the “work around” they did for the vinyl version of this album is. If there is a vinyl version.
@@plasticsoundwavecult I believe the LP has the same slipcase. I checked before making my speculation that they couldn’t place text over the Basquiat image.
ABBA was a group that took me a long time to admit that I liked. Though, it was not listening to them for a while that dragged me back in to their music. Very well crafted songs. I speak more in my video.
Queen and ABBA kind of had the same fate for me in the later '80s to the early '90s. Eventually I got over myself.
I’ll have some interesting things to bring up on your pick. I’ve been enjoying listening to Duran Duran today.
Looking forward to it.
I tried to make something Patrick Nagel-like for the thumbnail. You’ll have to tell me if I succeeded or not.
I definitely can hear the early Crowded House "sound" on this album. Honestly, "I Got You" is the only song, that I'm aware of, I've heard from them. I remember hearing on the radio and Top Of the Pops back in our brit days.
@@plasticsoundwavecult You might recognize a couple from a greatest hits that you didn’t know you knew.
1st. Great album.
@@emelle1283 A good one indeed. Thanks for watching.
I hear good stuff about SFA. Look forward to listening today.
Enjoy! Don't say I never did nothin' for ya!
🤔 the obvious connection i can find would be that both bands are Welsh?!
That's the wider connection that can be tightened down. Good for a point unless someone (or you) can give me that more specific connection.
@@GSPonsonby okay, more specifically, both bands were from Cardiff.
It's certainly not the full answer you're looking for, but both albums feature a vague "diss"-track called "How do you sleep?".
You hit the three-quarters-of-the-way mark. The easy version was just that they both have a song called "How Do You Sleep?" The full version was that both songs are diss tracks about former collaborators. (I read that Murphy intentionally re-used the title in reference to Lennon's track about McCartney.)
@@GSPonsonby cool 🙂
Listen to this last night. The first couple of songs did have some familiar synth tones. But the second song did sound like it came right off of This is Happening. To be fair, at this point these are the only two albums I’ve heard from him at this point.
I like that it is a more eyebrow-raising connection-John Lennon to LCD Soundsystem?!-but is a pretty rock solid connection nonetheless.
I’ve got an interesting connection for this one. Heard a bit of the album, but I will listen to it more intensely today. I’ve never really listened to Liz Phair before this. Though watching her appearance on the Joe Rogan show was something I found interesting.
@@plasticsoundwavecult Really listen to “Divorce Song.” Such a deft character study in not a lot of lines.
As for Liz. While she kept using the frank sects lyrics, she did stay being honest and thoughtful through WhiteChocolateSpaceEgg (a reference to her baby) and contains a favorite song in "Polyester Bride." But you missed the huge influence between WCSE and "Liz" - and as a casual fan maybe you didn't notice what is probably, by far, the song that has sold the most off any song she is featured on... I remember hearing it and thinking "Ooh! That's Liz! Maybe she can influence this other huge artist that I basically only tolerate!" - but it was the opposite. Go ahead, listen to "Soak Up The Sun" by Sheryl Crow.... THAT'S what really influenced the switch. She got to know Crow, noticed how a woman with a similar range became known as a "singer." So, she remodeled herself largely with Crow in mind. Annoyingly, it was also in the self-titled album that she made her most cringe naughty song in WHC... which is simply stupid and crass. I also listened to the album after that, but it is soooo boring. I saw her at Milwaukee's Summerfest around that time and it was telling.. She "grew up" and in some ways improved as a happy person... but it didn't really translate to better mature music.
“Never Said,” from Guyville, isn’t a million miles from a Sheryl Crow song, with the background harmonies and more polished sound. I’ve had that thought before. After Whip-Smart, I felt like I had two Liz Phair albums that I already wasn’t listening to, so I stopped following her. But I think I was betrayed by the media surrounding it, which invariably referenced the “blowjob queen” line, and that what was novel about it was its directness as opposed to its incisiveness. It took longer than it should have for me to take it in more holistically, and not just listen for the naughty bits.
I meant to guess last week, but it was not the right one (and doesn't fit M20) - maybe you didn't notice, but the first three all basically had clipart/ paper cutout art on the covers, although RH+B is a little more digital collage. This week, yeah, Eric mentioned the album "Exile on Main St." but brain farted that it was a Rolling Stones album. I also do not know the album and can't compare it to Guyville... which I will post separately about.
I think that qualifies as a successful guess. Yeah, Eric’s album immediately made me think of this one for the obvious reason, and I thought it would be a good one to talk about, so I didn’t try to come up with something more devious, even though the connection is right in your face.
Finally I get to do a collection connection correction. The U.S. version of Wonderland that I have is a four track record. The Dutch one had five and the Canadian version had six tracks.
It was too much to keep in mind as peripheral information, plus I think I was hanging onto the H&C EP, where the US one was longer than the antipodean version.
This episode made think how much things have changed over the years. Mostly those artists on that album.
To everything, turn, turn, turn…
I haven't watched this yet, and I don't really understand the rules, but I have a copy of Red Hot + Blue
The rules aren’t too tough, but they’re a little looser than a strict so-and-so appeared on both albums, or whatshisname produced both albums (though the connections *can* be exactly that kind of thing). Sometimes it’s something superficial like ‘both albums have a picture of an eye on the cover,’ or ‘both albums have a number in the title’; sometimes it’s something more devious like ‘these albums are both the last ones made by the original line-ups.’ It’s tough to come up with something golden every time. My brother and I started this because we’re both music lovers and collectors, but we live on opposite coasts, and this keeps us actively engaged with each other. Plus our tastes don’t overlap exactly, so we get to explore some titles from the other’s collection. So you can play by guessing what the connection is (I didn’t really clue it in at all this week, but it is a shallow one than can be figured out without knowing anything about the music on either album). Or you can just talk about Red Hot + Blue if you like. That’s cool too. Mostly I appreciate you stopping in and leaving a comment!
I just noticed, one week later, that I left a typo in one of the video graphics, citing DATH Cab For Cutie as the artist. That is the sort of mistake that makes me want to beat my head against a wall.
Partially blind guess- neither have CD release. I was going to go completely blind and say both were only released on one physical format, but I did check Discogs to see that Rock At The Edge did get a vinyl release. The thing with "The Edge" that gets me is how "the EDGE" became the hip trendy corporate speak for "Alternative music" and almost all the new corporate owned radio stations that adopted the format named their stations "The Edge" - So seeing it named that in 87 seemed weird.
@@nonsuchned94 You got the connection right. Nicely done. I thought it fun (for the game; frustrating for me in real life) that two releases came on either end of the CD era. And yeah, that EDGE thing definitely got wrung dry by the corporations.
@@GSPonsonby In the late 2000s, the organizers of Milwaukee's Summerfest decided to do their own Lalapalooza- but it had to also be "safe" as it was taking the place of a downtown festival that caused problems (huge fights, general mayhem) They called it Edgefest and booked lackluster acts. People stayed away in droves and it never happened again.
The Georgia Ep is on Spotify. Already listened to it twice.
When I looked up Maude the only real info I could find was he’s male.
You are probably correct in thinking she is a woman.
Starfish is an Album I’ve been on the look out for. I’m more in the “Under The Milky Way ” camp as far as songs from the album go. I look forward to this homework Album.
It’s a good ‘un. Really good atmosphere.
Bullshit about nothing. Bullshit Pop. Get an adult mind, and Read.
Since you said "surface level" my guess without any further research is that both artists' names are aliterations. Christopher Cross's first and last name start with C, and Joe Jackson is J J.
That’s the one.
Christopher Cross Arthur's Theme is answered by Joe Jackson ie best that you can do is fall in love vs best that I can do (is b a really aggravating bf). Yah.
A noble effort, but not what I was looking for. But thanks for watching, and playing along. Cheers!
without watching , just based on title, you are lucky bro
Lol. I try to keep open ears and open mind when approaching stuff that’s new to me, but I certainly can relate to hearing music that has no appeal to me at all.
My guess is that it's to artists makieng music with their brother(s)? Howard JOnes used to play in a band with his brothers before his solo career and also had at least one brother in his touring band?!
The thing I have in mind is more lifestyle-based; however-looking into it-there may be some accuracy to your guess. Obviously Billie has her brother, and I found something that Howard's brother "played bass," but I can't find when or in what capacity. I'll let Eric determine whether that is good for a point.
@@GSPonsonby No worries. If that is not the connection you had in mind, i don't think it's a point.
Keep it up, I love watching stuff about Billie ❤
I'd have to get more Billie to have more Billie to talk about, but you never know. Thanks for stopping in and leaving a comment!
Gonna listen To Billie today on the walk with Benny. Didn’t know Dream Into Action was your first record purchase with your own money. Cool bit of history there.
I feel like I’ve had a run where I’ve had more to say about your album choice than my album choice.
@@GSPonsonby I’ve listened to the Eilish and have some interesting thoughts on it.
Life’s What You Make It was a big hit when the album came out. I picked up the original release of Colour of Spring on Vinyl when it came out. Loved it, but missed Spirit of Eden. It seemed to be long out of print. I found Laughing Stock when it was released on CD. It took at least another decade before I found Spirit of Eden (streaming) and another 5 years or so when I found an SACD release in Tokyo. Like you, my favorite of their releases, but love the other two (and the Mark Hollis album too). Their earlier albums I enjoy, but don’t feel they are necessary to add to a collection if you don’t already have them.
I have their full catalogue, plus Asides Besides (which featured the indispensable "John Cope"), and even the remix album that (as I understand it) Mark Hollis absolutely hated. I bought Laughing Stock on its release day. It shared a release day with some big, anticipated album, I don't remember which, so the Ann Arbor music store where I purchased it stayed open until midnight to start selling it right away. Everyone was there for the big album, but I asked for Talk Talk, and they confusedly fished their one copy up from the shipment. I do find value in the first two records, too. Even though they were more of-the-time synth pop, I thought it was really good of-the-time synth pop, and the atmospherics of tracks like "Tomorrow Started" from It's My Life and the title track from The Party's Over were early signposts of what they'd eventually become, in my opinion. Thanks for stopping in!
So, we seem to have two bands that only have their founder as constant member, while the rest of the line-up always changed with each album? Btw, 'Too Rye-Ay' is a masterpiece imo.
Close enough for a gold star. I tried to make it extra clear that Jim Paterson appeared on the album but had quit the band, because the very specific connection is that only one founding member was in the band for the album in question. With Savoy Brown, it was natural (fast, but natural) turnover over eight albums gradually replacing all the other members. It just made me laugh that in Dexys case it was only the second record, and everyone left because they couldn’t take Rowlands’ bullshit.
@@GSPonsonby 😄 clearly a difficult chap.
Interesting take on Savoy Brown. Didn’t know about the word “Savoy”. I thought the name had something to do with gravy. Listened to the DMR album. You might be surprised on my thoughts on that album.
I look forward to hearing them, then. But what I really want to know is, did my thumbnail make you chuckle? The Too-Rye-Ay / Yippee-Ki-Yay conflation got stuck in my head, so I had to do something with it.
based on title, I thought you were going to talk about ALL of Erasure's best B-sides, not just Wild's. Maybe consider doing a top 20 Erasure b-side list. "Over The Rainbow" "HINRG" "True Love Wars" "Let it flow" are some of my faves. "Dreamlike State". Glad you talked about my fave childhood band! Thank you!
"True Love Wars" may be my single favorite Erasure B-side. My collection is deep enough that I could definitely compile my 20 favorites; I have a playlist that is just Erasure B-sides that is 29 songs long, and doesn't include every last B-side that I have. But Wild is the one era where the B-sides strike me as largely better than what made it onto the album. As far as the slightly misleading video title, I hate having to play the UA-cam game. As you can see, I don't get a ton of views, so something that invites a curious click is still important. Early on, we would only reveal the connection within the video, but trying to maintain that mystery meant literally no one was enticed enough by the title and thumbnail to watch the video in the first place. Even after three years of doing this, I'm still a teeny tiny channel, and trying to figure out how to title the videos honestly, but also in a way that makes folks interested to watch. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
Two bands with one word repeated as their band name?!
Huzzah! It was an easy lob of a connection, in part because I didn't have time to do a well-researched connection, and in part because it had been weeks since I'd gotten a correct guess.
@@GSPonsonby 😄 thanks for making it possible.
