    Which step is hard in usmle

    • @BESTUSMLETUTOR
      @BESTUSMLETUTOR 11 місяців тому

      Thank you for your question/comment. Each USMLE Step is unique and poses a different set of challange for students and can vary in difficulty level as judged by individual student. Step 1 has the most detail oriented and vast syllabus and since it is the first time most students esp., USMD and USDO which constitute the majority of USMLE test takers as well as most IMGs who take Step 1 1st, it is quite challanging even though it is pass/fail. USMLE Step 2 CK is all about Clinical Knowledge is reletively easier for USMD and USDO Students because they have first hand US Clinical Experience and are accustomed to the lenghthier MCQs found on Step 2 CK. IMGs have traditionally struggled more on their Step 2 CK esp., if English is a second language. That being said, Step 2 CK has taken center-stage now in terms of selection criteria for Interviews and ultimately Matching, and all students are trying to score higher and IMGs should be aiming to score a few points higher than their US counterparts. USMLE Step 3 is a 2 day exam and is a real marathon and also includes the Computer Case Simulation style Virtual Case Management, ever increasing Step 1 material and Biostistics on day 1, along with the fact that vast majority of USMD, USDO and most IMGs who take Step 3 are Residents PGY1 or PGY2 with a heavy Clinical work load are increasing finding Step 3 quite challanging. If the goal was to just reach Passing Scores then in-terms of hardness or difficulty level, data for both USMD, USDO as well as IMGs unequvocally shows that Step 1 is still the hardest, and then USMLE Step 3 and then USMLE Step 2 CK. But in my opinion an individual student, regardless of being an USMD, USDO or an IMG should take all 3 USMLE Steps seriously and try and do their absolute best. Even though Step 1 is Pass/Fail, if one aims to simply pass it, might secure a low pass, or fail. Therefore, one must reach a minimum of 72 on their Step 1 NBMEs to have 99% chance of passing within a week. But, my students are given the green light from me at 80%+, because I know how instrumental your preparation during Step 1 is in shaping your M3 experience, Shelf Exam Scores and ultimately your Step 2 CK score which will matter where it really counts, that is, in the minds of Interviewers and ultumately determine where one Matches and with how much difficulty. Try to reach 10 points higher than the actual target score on latest Step 2 NBMEs before taking the actual Step 2 CK. USMLE Step 3 has the lengthiest questions and CCS, and I have seen students who did average or even above average on their CK, get a surprise fail on their Step 3. Step 3 has always been harder for IMGs, given the lack of USCE if they take it before Residency, which is an increasing trend and Passing Step 3 is a requirement if an IMG wants a H1B work visa as opposed to a less desirable J1 visa. For US-IMGs, this is not a concern, but even they are finding Step 3 increasing challanging because of greater Step 1 influence which is week for many of then as well as Biostats and CCS which everyone is fearful of. I hope this helps! If you haven't Subscribed yet, please do!
