Custom Rod Building - Fitting Reel Seat Arbors
This is the best method, and often the quickest, for fitting reel seats to rod blanks. Video shows how to do it with either a lathe or common hand drill. The explanation on how to do this takes about 8 minutes, here, but the actual time to do it takes maybe 2 or 3 minutes. Once you know how you won't go back to tape, etc.
For those wanting to learn about proper surface preparation for bonding, please see this earlier video: ua-cam.com/video/ZXc4Z18TjU8/v-deo.html

What appears below is just a quick hand-held video tour of the EXPO hall from this past Saturday morning. I apologize beforehand for any shakiness or quick movements as I made a quick pass around the west side of the hall. I also apologize to the vendors not included who were on the main aisle on the east side of the hall. There were too many people to negotiate and I was needed elsewhere. This...

    A little denatured alcohol helps loosen up the left over little bits & pieces.

      Thanks. Generally denatured alcohol won't affect cured epoxy. Acetone tens to be better for that purpose.

      @rodmakermagazine7117 That's true and my mistake. I'm in the process of wrapping one as I typed that and mis-spoke. Acetone is what's best.

    Nice I have 2 different rods to fix. A St. CROIX AND ANOTHER ONE. Seems these 2 rods in particular I am always having issues with and at 20 dollars a pop for someone else to do this I may as well go buy a new one.

      Yes, and I said so at the outset. The idea is to offer more than one way to do this based on what tools the builder may have in his or her shop.

    Gonna try your method as I’m not always happy with my reaming it off centred. Is there particular reason using two foam smaller arbors vs just the full length one? Figured with full length there will be less epoxy to fill in the middle portion of the grip

    • @rodmakermagazine7117
      @rodmakermagazine7117 2 роки тому

      Don't fill in the open area between the arbors, That only adds weight, not strength. Adhesives are typically strong when applied in close fitting assemblies, not for use in gap filling. The bond between blank and arbor and then arbor to reel seat, is more than strong enough. Putting epoxy in-between them just adds a lot of unnecessary weight.

    No way is that faster than tape.

    • @rodmakermagazine7117
      @rodmakermagazine7117 2 роки тому

      It is faster and much, much better than tape. I took time to fully explain the process here. Once you understand it you can usually set two arbors in place in just a couple or three minutes.

    Thank you for the video. I can't express enough how helpful this is to view the process. Being new to rod building this is extremely valuable for us newbies. Reading tutorials is helpful, but there's nothing like seeing it from an experienced builder. Please keep the videos coming. I would love to see a video on fixing thread epoxy mistakes. If there is such a thing. You make this all look so simple.
