This sport is getting so expensive, love the interviews thanks. We camped at Viento last fall for 2 weeks, awesome spot. The trains didnt bother us but we are in a 35foot fifth wheel. Larry
Absolutely, and I meant to add the following caveat to this video: “You don’t need any of this new junk.” My wings are close-out $250 wings. My board is close-out used $500 years old design. My foils are decent but you don’t see me out there buying the latest and greatest now that I have decent ones. (And I bought some of them used for a deal.) The trend has been to push expensive race gear or the best downwind foil. But this sport was always about fun and people are forgetting that. I have plenty of fun on my old gear and outride quite a few people in the process! I wasn’t even going to make the video this year because of how commercial the sport has become. But people demanded I go.
Great vid.
Thanks
I live on North Beach in Corpus and kitesurf. Good job on the video! It really made me want to learn to wing ... Like Chillcoat, I've been putting it off. Loved the parking lot action at Water's Edge.
Nice! North beach is a fun place to wing when it’s windy enough to get some swells. It can be tough to learn there because of the onshore wind (maybe try A&M first). Drag Jeff out with you and get after it!
What if I accidentally put it through the wash
GoPros are waterproof when closed (unless there’s a bad seal). If it’s not working after the wash I don’t know what to tell you.
@@wingmanfoilclub I had the battery in my shorts
I would probably just buy a new battery instead of introducing corrosion into the GoPro.
good to see you in the water yesterday Rob!!
You too. Great to meet you. One small clip of you in the Instagram video
Raddy-coolo :) Great video! Keep em up
Thank you!
It’s the persevering masochist move!
If I’m not hurting myself am I even foiling?
thanks, great sharing!
Welcome!
one of the cool parts about releasing the video is you will get some tips from others and improve.. Nice Job and you will nail it with more practice.
When I get a good one I feel like I’m close to mastering it. Then I take 50 bad wipe outs. Haha
Super slow mo version at the end. Your front foot comes off the board before the spin. That's what sent you to the rail instead of the center line. Seems like you gotta really keep your front toe down for the entire spin to maintain your position on the board. Otherwise the foil just shoots ahead of you. So close!
The funny thing is even though that one looks bad it felt great. I was almost able to pull it out. I think it might help to start with the front foot more heelside to make room for the next foot placement
Hey ist there going to be a bigger Art V2 LIKE A 1099?
I don’t have any info on that. Probably best to ask the AXIS Facebook group
Thanks
You’re welcome. Go to my insta if you want to see them in action. I’ve been using them for the last few months cause I found a deal. Not a perfect wing, but pretty fun! Luffs well too for riding swell.
Thank you for your work on this video, so many interesting things explain with passion 😀
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Thanks!
Epic! Thank you!
Thank you for this amazing coverage!

That presentation with Axis was great finally someone that can speak without out going a, um so annoying when people speak that way. And the leak is maybe the FireBall see Downwind_Drifter for my comment. "Prototype sup foil run downwind, and what a foil! Mint conditions Axis downwinding, Zhik, Ppc"
Fun fact, I edit out A LOT of people’s “ums.” Haha. One reason my videos may seem more watchable and why they are so much work.
@@wingmanfoilclub Thank you 😊 😊 😊
Thank you Robert for your job, well done!
You’re welcome, Jimmy!
Your videos are the next best thing to being there in person! I do have the Sabfoil Balz 909 which I rode at Topanga on your birthday. I started boosting with it last weekend. It has a lot more pop than the Medusa pro, at least for me learning to jump. Now I’m salivating over the 808.
@@dcjtv Did you feel compelled to tip because I mentioned your name and said you were faster?? Haha. Boosting now! Uh oh! Thanks so much for the support. I didn’t realize you have the 909. Looks so fun. All the sab foil stuff looked good. Wing and board too. Just sent Radiculo the little stupid part of the video where I inserted his face. He’s stoked to come to Hood.
Great video Rob. Kane has essentially copied what high performance sailplanes have been using for decades with that foil design and the concave bottom section. If I wasn't already invested in Axis I would consider KT for a foil system. I have a KT board and love it! Thanks for the vid!
Awesome. I’ll have to take a look at that.
Nice, thanks so much

Where was F-One?
They were there. I mention what happened briefly in my final thoughts but I tried to get Luca V to show us around but he was off doing team rider things and F-One wasn’t unveiling any new gear at the show because new stuff was unreleased. I figure there’s plenty of f-one content out there with their current stuff.
Thanks

Yo. Heard it’s been good down there though! You gotta get the inland Armstrong riders out to join the Malibu Armstrongers!
Best AWSI video this year, thank you for making this!!!
There wasn’t a lot of competition this year. Just me and Winglife! He’s a cool dude too.
Thanks!
Honestly. So much aloha!!!
Thanks!
Yo. You guys are so nice!!!
Thanks for including chapters and making it easy to navigate. I can tell a lot of time went into making this.
Yoooo! You are amazing. Thanks for the support! As much time as I could spend and still get it out by the weekend!
i mean this was epicly informative being new to wing foiling. so thank you. But more confused than ever where to get into the up to date stuff. For a 180 pound person wanting to wing and downwind surf in socal conditions 12-16 kts on good days -what would be anyones go to setup? thanks everyone.
If you’re a beginner I still believe the most beneficial setup is a traditional 120L board, 6-7m good hand wing, and a big foil. Later you can move onto a 90L hybrid board, 5-6m wing, and higher efficiency foil, but trying to learn on that gear will absolutely be no fun and delay your progress unless you have a serious Windsports background. Also traditional learning gear can be found cheap on the used market
@@wingmanfoilclub ok. Awesome info. Appreciate the response. Any 120L brand/model you recommend?
@conorprovan9435 if you go to my website under Wingfoiling -> How to Wingfoil Series you’ll see an episode on beginner gear. It links to a video with Josh from The Foil Shop and then below it in the replies I’ve written a MASSIVE dissertation on beginner boards, wings, and foils. Should answer most of your questions. But anything a couple years old that is cheap and not too narrow should work! wingmanfoilclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=58 Edit: You do need to sign up (free) to view the pictures.
Nice highlight vid. No Fone there this year?
They were there but I ran out of steam in the heat and Luca V went to ride instead of talking to me. They weren’t announcing new gear because their new stuff is still unreleased, so nothing new for me to add that isn’t already out in the many team rider videos.
@@wingmanfoilclub Got it, thanks!
Very nice video. And the right questions asked! Really looking forward to test the KT foils.Great video!
Gotta keep my reputation as the hard hitting journalist and no BS reviewer of foiling what with all the brand ambassadors posting their fake reviews. It’s tempting to feed brands a bunch of softballs for free gear, but damn ethics keeping me in the poor house. The KTs do look fun. I will have to do a real riding review with LAfoiler.
For some reeason (not sure why) i haven't watched or seen one of your videos in a long time. - set to be alerted to all of them.. Thanks for creating this content.. still watching but it looks like you took some time etc.. So little awsi videos out with exception of winglife this year.. Hopefully grabs you lots more subs!
I launched the How to Wingfoil Series earlier this year and a few other things but they didn’t really catch on, and I even got a few negative nellys in the comments on some of the stuff I did make, so I haven’t been as inclined to make content. Not to mention I think most gear is “good enough” now and I don’t want to just make videos reviewing stuff to sell to people when their foils are fine. We’ll have to reevaluate where we go from here, but know that I really value genuine viewers like yourself! There was a smaller media presence this year and the show itself felt smaller. It could have just been the heat and lack of wind though. Or maybe foiling has hit some growing pains. The winglife guy is a super nice dude and did a great job.
Great video! So good to see so much in one video!
Thanks. It’s my preferred format for this because people can jump around with the chapters or watch straight through and maybe see a brand they hadn’t heard about.
I will never buy another dakine product ever again
Did you have quality control issues?
@@wingmanfoilclub I have some expensive shorts which had both zippers fail in less than a year with their name on them
@sliekerstar that’s too bad. I’m guessing their apparel is separate from their Windsports gear though. There have been some quality control issues on the wing gear (like the luff handles on the Cyclone V1), but I have been quite happy with my Dakine Cyclone V2s, and I’ve loved their footstraps for years! Let me know if you need contact info for their warranty department, and I’ll try and pass it along. I know they’re working hard to maintain good customer service.
Adrian Roper most well spoken guy. Fireball I think going to give code and KT a run for the money.
He’s a great guy. It’s definitely one of the interesting new DW foils. Been hearing good things. Those tooth pick tails might be the real cheat code though.
Axis were off the pace at M2O. I'm guessing their riders were on the Fireball?
@Alfonso_111 I don’t know the full list, but I know some were like the twins who did really well, and I know even some other pro riders chose to ride them. I think Kai Lenny and Tom Constant… don’t quote me though. They told me but I’ve forgotten exactly who.
@wingmanfoilclub Hey, thanks for the content btw! 🙏
@JasonKadlec KT is looking interesting. Clean sheet design and new ideas. Can't wait to try!
Best AWSI video. Thank you.
I agree! Hahaha
Great vid. Love the concept. Power cramp but No fone, manera?
@@dchiffy F-one was there, and I tried to interview Luca V, but he was out riding. Plus, F-One had nothing new to unveil because their new stuff isn’t released to the public yet. I mention them briefly in my Final Thoughts but I was pretty exhausted from the brutal heat at that point. Them, Starboard, and AK are the only ones I didn’t interview this year I think. I also figure that other videos will heavily feature F-One.
Ah there it is 😎 Ok to share mate? Full credit across to your feed ? Can’t do thanks 🙏 from the Philippines 🇵🇭 won’t work. PayPal?
@@wingfoilrentals No worries just watch all the commercials! Haha
Thanks for the video! I tried your method and found that the wing can only stay horizontal during the flip (as in your demo) when riding slower than the wind. A horizontal wing obviously makes the flip and jibe much easier. When riding in very light wind / faster than wind I still get backwinded,/ the trailing edge is pushed and towards my side . Carving sharply is even more essential to make sure wing is not in front of me but it will often still push me off the board from the side. Do you have the same experience?
No, I don’t. I think you might still need to dial in the technique a little. The wing can stay horizontal at your back hip through most of the turn and is kept there by your apparent wind. Then when you “flip” the wing, think of it more as a horizontal pizza spin where you push the trailing edge to the other side. You might not be initiating the turn fast enough or keeping the wing back enough. If I’m in really light wind and going slow and the wing has zero power in it and I need to jibe (like exiting a wave in a no wind zone which is common at our spots), then I will do the race jibe and let that nose drop pull me around to gain some speed.
Why do guys who just learned to ride a week ago make videos? Just stop. Terrible video. Let the pros teach
@@JakeSimmons-r2u you seem like a lovely person
@@wingmanfoilclub I am. That is why I commented like that. To save people from all the information that you are missing!
@@JakeSimmons-r2u this is literally the most in depth jibing tutorial on UA-cam. Especially considering it was released 2 years ago with even fewer good tutorials online. I think if you read through the comments you’ll find this video to have helped A LOT of people. Tutorials by “pros” are often not very helpful because they don’t struggle like the common rider. I am a pretty high level winger at this point, and I still follow this basic jibing template. This channel is a community of people that want to get better at winging and support each other without ego or negativity. If that doesn’t describe you, I encourage you to not watch my videos and find a different winging community to be a part of. Hope you get on the water today.
@@wingmanfoilclub dude, the instructions are terrible compared to the others I’ve seen. Stop responding to me. I just want people to know you’re missing info.
@JakeSimmons-r2u this is my channel so I will respond whenever I feel like it. We would love to see your jibing tutorial and all your contributions to the Wingfoil community.
Great video and tips. I always hold the wing flying with the front handle, not the flag handle. Much better control of the wing which stays clear of the water at all time (both going out and going on). I also try to push down on the front of the board as the wave is coming (if not too big) to carry my body and my wing above the white water. Jumping off near shore, i kick off like you but hold on the the wing both hands and eventually only let go of the back hand to keep the wing out of the water. Amazing wave session you had!
Great tips! The front handle is definitely the way to go especially with wings like Duotone that have floppy luff handles and tend to oscillate.
@@wingmanfoilclub bonus: you don't have to dry your wing 🤣
Nice tutorial! Can I keep goofy stance the whole time?
@@mitchikuchiyadayada sure. It might even be a good idea since switching feet when it’s really light could end up taking you off foil
Capt John is great, he got me from noob to winging and up on a foil in 3 hours.
That’s awesome. Seems to have a great set up for teaching.
Love it, the hose seems to just alway get in the way, been looking for a way to strap it down
It’s great. I’ve been using it since I made the video and love having it. Keeps everything really tidy.
Nice. I have to work on these. I always forget to try them.
Do it
Cool to see the north coast footage and glad you made it back in one piece! I'm a beginner wing foiler, but Davenport is my home surf break. Big Davenport gets nasty quick with wicked rip between the north point and south reef. Pass that last south beach and it's a helicopter ride out. I've heard very accomplished wing foilers say Davenport is really nasty...but I'm hoping to ride there one day. Thanks again for the video and reflections!
In some ways it’s super chill… but it can turn bad quickly! I went back earlier this summer on a decent sized day and had a great session. But now I just play on the north point waves. They’re great for winging and allow you to hit some white water do a trick and get spit oil into the channel. But the secret to Davenport really seems to be rig something big (board, foil, or wing) to beat that wind shadow, stay on the north point or be cautious when on the south reef, and just go somewhere else when it’s weedy! Hope to see you out there some day.
