Unama’ki is the Mi’kmaw word for Cape Breton Island, and loosely translates to “Land of Fog.” Cape Breton has been home to the Mi’kmaw people for centuries, and Unama’ki College strives to meet the needs of Mi’kmaw and all other Aboriginal students from across the country. This means small class sizes, knowledgeable Mi’kmaw faculty and staff, and our Department of Indigenous Studies, which offers courses designed with Aboriginal students in mind.

Thank you for sharing. Came across this channel tonight and look forward to learning more. I grew up in Cape Breton. And have just moved back to NS. I’ve always been moved by the landscape and my connection to it. You can’t help but think about its vibrant history and I love learning more about it and how the community is reclaiming its heritage in whatever way possible. Such a gift to hear this woman speak. And what a reminder to live in the moment preserve the words on the generation before us.
I love you and miss you hon ❤

Its fine to let people come long as they dont cause harm or crimes. That's why it's important for people to be checked by means of vetting people. Why let troubling people who break rules dont care about the land or the people come? That's why it's important to have people come the rightful way. 😊 yes, if the Natives made sure good people come they wouldn't of had the troubles they had. Its just logical and smart. Thats why these evil people killed our people took our land and mistreated us. 😢
There is a book that talks about the commonalities between some of the Mi'kmaq and European myths. I ordered the book but there's an recording as well. Here's the link for anyone interested! ua-cam.com/video/zpYupE_cfis/v-deo.htmlsi=_ubFuPOskMxkZYxU
Thank you for this very informative presentation! My GG…Grandfather was Grand Chief Henri Membertou. I am trying to find all I can about him.
Thank you for sharing this amazing tradition and ceremony. I am trying to learn as much as I can regarding the MiKmaq’s. My 6x GGrandfather was Grand Chief Henri Membertou.
Im sure his grand kids enjoy the stories of their people 😊
They should of checked the sound system before filiming this teaching. The sound kept cutting out. Its interesting story
Kind of cool to learn my ancestors history 😊
Our ancestors were great navigators and I believe they scholars traveled to Timbuktu. Champlain is relatives of DuPont family and they are related to the Menard aka Minor. Jacques Cartier in my humble opinion is a descendant of Mail Empire. Simply because he appears in my family tree. African DNA is Mali Empire. Mik maq descendants desire recognition! DuPont donated massive land mass. All interconnected!
I’m a descendant of Chief Henri and I’m also have Ship Burial Vendall Period. My African DNA is from the Mali Empire, which was Timbuktu all this has appeared in my DNA results and within my family tree. Chapdeliane,Menards LeBlanc and Cartier. Nice hearing my research confirmed regarding my ancestors of Turtle Island. Sun child . Kemet DNA is present. We must be aware of motherland One Love. Northumberland Monks from Holy Island is our legacy!
A lot of us so called Africans were native here aswell I would love to hear some of the teachings on the first inhabitants because it’s already confirmed that the first writing were hieroglyphs
He was my GG..grandfather, so we are related!
@@julieanntregeagle2594 he was also my GG Grandfather!
🪶
I thought I missed out but heard I can apply please send or notify me to get more info .😊Thank You
Similar to the settler colonialism we saw in the 20th century and still see occurring today in Palestine.
Beautiful! Thanks Stephen Augustine ❤
You arent aware whom you are talking to man...
My Parents Are from Saco and Biddeford, I hope I am on your side???

Thank you
this is my ancestors history... im actually 13th generation from Pierre Dugua de Mons...the governor general of the acadie .. it was suppose to be called arcadia or arcadie .. as terre promise or paradis .. but someone miss spelled the name and it stay acadia or acadie .. I'm actually a metis cross race between european and a Native Micmac ...im and Acadien the other french canadian no ones knows really about... our history is directly connected with the independants war....
*Why don't you say 'how' they 'justified' possessing Title - Via a religion, mere belief & made their beliefs Globally Legal massacring millions of God's Creations, how hypocritical...
Towards the end of this video, he's talking about the shifting changes of the women's role within the tribe, but actually it's shifting back. Women were hierarchy and very important. Clan mothers were one of the most important aspects of our culture in our tribes that helped with a lot of decision making and community support solutions.... Our men in our tribes were leaders of warriors and protectors. It was the clan mothers that brought us together to unify our strength in order to survive. They are the reason why we survived and are living here today. And you wouldn't believe it. In Womens prisons 80% of the prison population in Canada is First Nation indigenous women. All the trauma that they have been through all the drugs and alcohol that is ruined their lives. All we did was throw them in a cell and throw away the key and lock them away. Hiding there! Generational traumas and mental health issues. Kind of the government's last resort to extinguish our people. To kill off our women.
Mr Augustine, thank you. I love you, you have educated me far beyond anything school could provide. Welalin
Is there a cultural significance to the feather he's holding while he speaks or is it a personal thing? Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question; I'm not Canadian
🪶💫
🤍
Such a lovely, knowledgeable person.
Interesting
I will NEVER understand how a adult, in this case the priest, could inflict pain to a child like that. What a sin. I hope these priests, nuns all rot in HELL. Bastards.
Jesus wept! You beat, starved and killed children THE CATHOLIC CHURCH TORTURED AND KILLED KIDS. Then this cult thinks all they have to do is say "sorry," and all is well huh? I hope that entire cult blows to kingdom come.
Richibouqto Fire River and Partridge haven't heard in awhile born there as well. Connection with the spirit as well goes way back not sure where it comes from but not obsessed about it just there . Sawadee Khap.
I really enjoyed this. Thank you for putting it on you tube! Love from Nova Scotia !!
i just discovered my family line leasds to this very man and i was lead here.. thank god i found this ty soo much! im soo happy to see this
Jean/John fraser and Marie-cecile Fraser are my ancestors, along with Isidore Bastarache forming Bouctouche, NB. I am trying to get clan information and I cannot. The name Marie and Margaurite are kept in the family. One way or another.
I feel for you brother and Im sorry I know the journey must have been so hard and frightening for a little boy. May the Red Road rise to meet you and Ancestry embrace you always .My good thoughts and prayers and love are with you . I heard stories from others along the way its terrible what they have done to you...and many others. I understand the hate you must feel but we know love in a dif way a way that sings to us in the morning and touches us in the night with the stars. They dont know that kind of connection but we do and no matter where we go or end up it never leaves us ..thats the oneness with all living things . We know the water speaks to us we know the wind hears us the thunder is our creators tongue ...talking
They used to hit gma alll the time the evil pieces of shit...she did nt speak english well either ..the thing is they were so little they d never understand it
I had never been hit .
Thank you merci wala’lin for Sharing your special stories
Stephen you are an excellent teacher. Love your recollection of historical events. I researched all of this 13 years ago really appreciate the recap. A eastern Métis respects you. Thank you merci wala’lin
The colonial powers were catholic! Christianity does not = catholicism.
Britain was not Catholic
@@The_Jovian They certainly are now.
*Queen Elizabeth 1 was excommunicated but still joined the Cabal of other International countries in the race for Land Grabs using the 'Papal Bulls' as Justification, see US Johnson vs McIntosh case that somehow, still stands today
Germany was not predominantly Catholic.
@@emmakostyna55 The Church of England isn't part of the Catholic Church.
Thanks for sharing this. Wonderful hearing Poutrincourt and the rest were welcomed by Membertou and his people. My mothers a decent of the Poutrincourt ancestry and my fathers side was married into the Mi’kmaq community via one of Membertous daughters (Pierre Lejeune and Marie Kagigonias). I’m just learning all of this and it’s incredibly humbling learning about all of these stories of our past. 🧡

Fakes and lies told to push the native victim mentality ..why aren't you so passionate about the physical and sexual abuse of native children by native people? Guess there's no pricetag you can attach unlike the one you have on the church and government and hard working Canadians who had nothing to do with it
This is awesome. Henri Membertou is my distant ancestor, which I only found out about a few years ago.
I love hearing this perspective. I think cultural diversity is as important to humans as biodiversity is to the living things on the planet. Thank you for both keeping and sharing yours.
