Always a pleasure to see a video from you
I always appreciate the support. Let me know if there is anything you’d like to see more of.
double majoring lol both a teacher and a student
Class is never over.
would it be 20:13? i think that sequence was noice and then i like how clean how the footstep sfx transitioned well after
Bingo! Luckily my footfalls are pretty even and rhythmic (I blame all of the military runs), so all the transitions were an easy fit.
This video features one of my favorite editing sequences ever. Can you guess which part it is?
Your videos are always lovely to watch
You are so kind!!
4:37
“A privilege that comes at a cost”
Perfectly stated!!
congrats on starting a new adventure, mr dontae!! i believe in you maneeee. new is very daunting (esp in a secondary language) but new is kinda fun ive always thought of anxiety and excitement in the same side of the emotional spectrum, just depends on if you view it more positive or negative. confidence! optimism! easier said than done tho haha. you knocked the first week out and have clear ideas of how to adapt and grow. to me that sounds exciting 😈 hope to hear more about it in the future
Thank you so much! I have a good heading on my compass, so I’ll follow it until I hit a cliff or a wall 😅. You’re right about anxiety being a two-sided coin. I just gotta flip it again.
YOU MADE IT! this is so cool to see because we were classmates!! congrats
A lot can happen in a few years 😅. Thank you. I’ll keep the updates coming. 😊
Bruh, this was a great opinion piece, and you made some great points. Trust and believe, living in the States with a level head, shows me that the U.S. is hella imperfect. I believe dialog like this helps opens eyes and hearts to a new path of thinking, if they are willing to listen. Good to see a new video from you, Dontae. Keep them coming!👍🏿
great video. always thought your place in the background of your vids looked cozy; you must be a pretty good interior designer
Love this. Just discovered your channel after visiting Japan for the first time 3 weeks ago. I am a teacher as well, and I love seeing you teach in Japan. Sort of a dream for me.
It's been a while since I watched a dontae video and the qualities are getting better and better. University has been tough but the goal and the destination are still clear in my mind. Keep up the awesome videos! With more resilience and hard work, I'll be going to where I want to be sooner or later.
I’m glad you dropped a comment. It’s been a while since I’ve heard from you. I’m glad you’re hanging in there. And I have little doubt that you’ll get to where you want to be with a mindset like yours. What’s your University course/major?
@@DontaeDakara I’m currently finishing my last semester for my diploma in script writing, my diploma will allow me to branch off into a degree for education writing, or language education (including english). I’m excited to graduate since I’m eligible to apply for a scholarship under MEXT to study for my degree in Japan. Hopefully I’ll be able to get a scholarship for a degree in education. You’re a great inspiration to me and I always look forward to watching your videos.
2:08 'what changes would necessitate me being a good x' it could be father, student, or businessperson. i really like that reverse goal setting or inquiring. nice one dontae!
Thank you. 🙏🏾 I use this line of questioning when I make lessons, so it has become second nature to ask it of myself everywhere else. Not what can I do, what must I do.
didactic and dynamic
As a young college student. I sometimes struggle with the discipline aspect of learning. And I want to learn how to be a great leader to help the people around me if I ever have to. Watching your Videos remind me Of my Grandfather, Who had an old 1970s soul brother vibe. Your videos are an inspiration to keep going. So I wanted to say thank you i wish we had more teachers like you in the states.
I think finding a mentor is key. The military is big on mentorship. I have had many amazing ones in my time. I have continued finding mentors in my time in Japan as well. I appreciate your kind words about my video. Keep striving. There is strength found in the struggle.
“Are you dead yet? No? Then you have another chance.” Definitely going to use that from now on. As always, love witnessing your new content 👍
Thanks! I appreciate your continuous support, Maria. See you soon!
Thanks to all of the leaders I had in the military that will live on through my students, as everything you have taught me is somehow passed on to them. You'll never know how much you have helped me.
Thanks for sharing this part of your journey. I connected to several parts. I use to say, "If I have experience in anything, it's starting over." Yet in reality, it's all been a continuation. The visual journal of my life would look like a kaleidoscope. Many parts, but one image. I love and miss you, son! ✌🏾🖤👑
I want the relationships video lol
Yea… lol so does about 30% of the other protagonists here. I will do it when I am able to answer the more difficult questions that people may have. (Subscribers = Protagonists)
me too hahaha
“Change is my home”
Sometimes you say something off the cuff that just hits. 😅
Man life gets at people many times that ruin people’s plans. Anyways nice seeing you again and still at it in Japan.
先生だ!!!!!最高の先生ですよ!
よ!ありがとう😎😎😎。
I’m watching this a year late. I wanted to add that even if you’ve gotten some pushback, it’s so important to be honest and show that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. It’s a question of what kinds of problems you’re willing to live with. We can’t live life only with rose colored glasses.
That is very true on your last point. I think that people are quick to call someone a hater for pointing out reality, but nothing is perfect and rare black and white. Nuance is required to discuss the pros and cons of anything, but especially an entire country.
2:56 - I fully agree with you on this. Really, I agree with every point you’ve made. I’ve been doing language and cultural exchange. I had someone tell me this week that we are incapable of being peaceful because we aren’t homogenous. I was so insulted. I’m going to use many of these points. 😂
I think we are in a very poor place when people think peace is impossible. When did we become so cynical as a species?
猫ちゃんかわいい!
so sick! i can’t wait to watch this later. i’m a teacher in the United States. i have been looking at videos that depict individual experiences of people living/teaching in Japan. a lot to think about! but i immediately want to watch this one because MCR is my favorite band of all time! your other videos are great and i have a good time watching them. thank you.
I feel the same way about beeches. There is a level of freedom associated with walking or laying in the sand. That island looks like a peaceful journey . ✌🏾🖤👑
If you're watching this in the summer, how has your summer been? If it's not summer, would you like to explore any of the smaller islands in Japan?
DECEMBER?? 何それ… hope you can get it moved up. if not, im sure you got it first try 🫡 its jus driving yeah 🤷🏽 i believe in your skills n im sure you do too
Right?! That's crazy. I looked over the driving course and it seems easy enough. I'll probably watch a few videos to check and practice with one of my friends that have a license on one of the courses.
@@DontaeDakara がんばって!!
Hey there...can you renew your TX license online?
AYYY that's awesome, you're from Texas too!
Not born and raised, it's just my home of record. I've lived too many places to have a true "from" or home. lol
Good luck brother
Thanks! I'll do my best!
Mamba mentality!! I know how you feel, it’s weird switching from “how can I help my team succeed” to “I’m better than all of the competition”
I would say that you earned the “privilege” to dictate your own terms through your dedication to your craft. I would think of that as seniority giving flexibility, as opposed to an inherited privilege
That's a great way of thinking of it. "Seniority earns flexility." I may use that in my classroom when talking about why my 1st years have more rules about their study style than my 3rd years.
One thing that has helped my decision making recently is determining my criteria for success. In this case, it sounds like getting a homeroom teacher position would more than meet the criteria of success for leaving your current role. It sounds like a specialist position may bring a new, engaging set of “problems to solve”… but you may not necessarily be as fulfilled in the day to day work. Is that worth leaving your comfort zone? If the principal of the school is on your side, is there any way of achieving some of that fulfillment/responsibility in your current school district, possibly on weekends or in an unofficial capacity? Is it always better to challenge yourself in your day job? Or is it sometimes better to stay in your comfort zone and expand your horizons outside of work? I was trying to figure out how to word that yesterday and I got distracted, let me know if I nailed it lol
Real talk. Especially the point in the first half about knowing your boundaries and setting those limits for yourselves. Better take note! (Good job making that point.) On another note: Thank you so much for bringing us OG Japan Expats up-to-date on how Japanese companies have changed over the past decades.
Thank you. I think that we often are taught to be flexible, but that has its limits. The company culture is evolving and not in a good way for the most part. I hope that there is a return to caring about the worker as Japan continues to deal with the birthrate issue. Most people connect corporate culture, pay, and lack of resources to that problem, so there is a chance, but I won't hold my breath.
Yes, Ibaraki was the first place I lived in, in Japan - in 1984! I plan to visit again soon and it has a special place in my heart.
(And I couldn’t catch that: You made a “what” to go? Because you skipped your morning caffeine, you said…)
Yea, it is definitely something special. As for the caffeine, I always have a dirty chai. A chai tea with a shot of espresso.
I really enjoyed your lesson! You're really great at connecting with the kids. Did you ever have any issues with nervousness when teaching? How long did it take to become comfortable in the classroom?
I never had the nervousness, but I believe that was because I always loved the stage. I’m excited to put on a show and to get my students to share, then take the stage themselves. The bell chimes and it’s showtime. 😅. For me the comfort in actually teaching came from my understanding of what I wanted the outcome to be, and working from there. I know the curriculum, I know what I want my students to be able to do, and I know there will be obstacles. And the obstacles are what most teachers worry about. That’s the fun part to me. I think that the process is like riding a bike. You can do it or you can’t. The trick is what roads are closed on the way to your destination and how will you get there by the time that next bell rings.
This has to be your best shooting yet, really well framed. Great to see us creating art like this… and this part 2:40 is gonna stick in my mind for a while lol
I’m so glad that you appreciated the shooting. Sometimes… a lot of times, I overthink things. “Do they see what I see? Do they know what I’m communicating with this shot?” To hear that it will stick with you- that’s the best kind of compliment.
I love the rain. The word Torrent reminded me of the horse you get to ride in Elden Ring lol
I watched this entire episode imagining it in an animated format. It works both ways!
That would be hilarious, and now I’m rewatching it and imagining the animation style.
I really enjoyed this episode! I think what I love most is the realization that with each video that you post, you allow us an opportunity to witness the different facets of your perspective. Thanks for that. **And rainy days are the favorite, of course!
Well, let’s hope I’m a disco ball or I’m gonna run out of facets 🥹. Thank you for watching, commenting, and contributing to the story.
Do you enjoy the rainy days?
Hi! May i ask how much is a ragdoll in japan? Thank u
There are rescues that have them occasionally, but to adopt one from a shop, it would be nothing less than 100,000 yen. The older they are the less costly the adoption fee.
洋服は、カッコいいだよ!
Love all the plants in the bedroom, gives it a vibe. I enjoyed the all Japanese style as well.
Thanks, I really want my place to look like a jungle. I'm in the middle decorating another room, so my plant count will continue growing 💚
So, this was much harder than I originally thought. The worst part was the subtitles. It was a technical nightmare for the first video. I wish I could just pay for it, but that defeats the point of practicing this and personalizing my story. My words, My way, and all of my mistakes. What did you think?
Man you need some bigger chunks of pineapples lol. Amazing vid. ❤ TY is the spot!!!!!!! Love that place . Hope you get better with the memory and all that Jazz. Keep pushing!!!!
Good to see this week's diary! I love the rainy weather, both staying in and sometimes going out in it; puts a twist on the everyday environment we live in and a different sense in the air. I love the fashion sense you have and I recently moved to New Mexico for a new job too as a little update from my life! Been looking forward to playing the new Zelda game; juuust after I beat Hogwarts first though. That and Elden Ring make for very cozy staying-in games.
I lived in New Mexico for a few years. I enjoyed the ABQ area, but my work was in the High Plains. Didn’t miss those days. On the gaming note, I have yet to beat Hogwarts. I did beat Star Wars though. That’s a game of the year candidate- if you’re into action RPGs.
@@DontaeDakara star wars is definitely on my list, I beat the first game a while ago and gifted it to some friends that might be into it
