This is very difficult to watch. Patriarch gets shit faced, goes home, eats, falls asleep, sobers up and goes out again. Family more critical of each other than of themselves. Husband and wife drifted apart. So this guy hooks up to be happy again and leaves his family in ruins. Very depressing and there's no happy ending.

Used to watch university challenge on a sunday hated it as i was with my nan and we wouldnt hav dinner until it finished, the smell of the meat cooking. When it finished she would get up and put veg on, timed to the minute of my grandfather walking down path from sunday pub. They were the days when you got hungry and had to wait, something children know nothing about today. Ooo i sound so old 🤣

Just seen this for the first time. So engaging, brilliantly acted and cast. Spellbinding. And then, as the closing credits began, I saw that Colin Welland had written it. At that point, it all made sense. Just majestic. Real and meaningful. My god, English television was once untouchable.

Wonderful play! I didn't realise Colin Welland wrote as well as acted. Great to see Bill Maynard in a straight role - I think I've only ever seen him as comedy later in his life. Apart from the wonderful writing, I'm so enjoying plays from the 70s on UA-cam - spot the actor/actress early in their career! As others are saying here, where did this go? I grew up in the 70s but was just a bit too young to be watching Play for Today, but was aware of it. Thank goodness for UA-cam and the people involved in uploading these gems. Thank you.

Joe was my friend, mentor and mentor. He told me he got the idea of combining "All Blues" and "Every Day I Have The Blues" in the shower. When he finished his shower, he called Miles Davis and told him. Miles said it was a great idea and Joe frequently performed it from then on. (I perform it the same way myself and have been doing so since 1996).

Colin Welland later adapted the play to an American landscape for the film Twice In A Lifetime. He was doing research in early 1982 in Washington state and got to know the locals at their local bar. Every time he entered the bar they would say "Hang onto you wallets, the British are coming". This phrase stuck with him and he used the last part of it when he won his Oscar a few weeks later for Chariots Of Fire.

Anderson despised Richard Attenborough's simple, warm-hearted, liberal movies. He particularly loathed the 'nursery history' of 'Gandhi', whose international success, together with Puttnam's 'Chariots of Fire', had sparked the umpteenth 'revival' of the UK industry. (Attenborough was another contributor to this short TV series.) While big budgets were being expended on 'Revolution' and 'Honky Tonk Freeway', all Anderson could manage to produce was the New England chamber piece, 'The Whales of August'. His spasmodically funny but ponderous and bilious satire, 'Britannia Hospital', had lain an egg in 1982, seeming out of sorts with the spirit of Thatcher's Britain basking in the Falklands War. Anderson had become a curmudgeonly naysayer, jeering from the sidelines. He would never make another feature film on his home turf.
