Europe's Rail Joint Undertaking

Europe's Rail JU is a public-private partnership in the rail sector, co-financed by the Horizon Europe programme, funding research and innovation and harmonising standards to deliver the railway system of the future. One of its main goals is to help create a Single European Railway Area.
FP1 MOTIONAL Mid-Term Event
On 29 October, over 150 participants attended the mid-term event of our Flagship Project 1 MOTIONAL.
During the event, industry professionals and project teams discussed about advanced railway planning, seamless multimodal integration, operational efficiency, and the transformative impact of digital enablers. Overall, the event was a great opportunity to reflect on the progress and milestones that have been achieved in the project.

This seems a pretty ambitious. But in the meanwhile, the US department of energy is financing a private project (of a company named Parallel system) aimed to have self-driving train wagons, able to drive alone or also forming full train. When the DAC-5 is operational, will it already be obsoleted compared to the US Parallel System project ?

Only 750m, the janney coupler and SA-3 pulled the most heavy train on the world.
Yes. But thats often in the US or in Russia. 750 meters is pretty long in Europe. But we should shoot for twice that at 1500 meters. This technology is still under development and if customers asked for it, the system could probably be upgraded for longers trains!
"Only 750m", but remember train infrastructure was build with shorter trains in mind. There's not much point in having trains longer then yards and stations. Bigger thing is how quick the coupling can be engaged or disengaged
Multiple mile long trains are not planed for the European train network, that is a mixed system for cargo and passenger trains that doesn't accommodate for long term route blockage.

Automatic coupling seems like a no brainer. It saves huge amounts of time, even without the mentioned automation and it systems. scharfenberg couplers were invented over a hundred years ago (!) how come nobody tought of this idea before?

@@rykmat2542 Europe is so late adopting knuckle couplers for universal uses. even Shaffenberg came a generation after Eli Janney invented knuckle couplers in 1870s and within 20 years Janney couplers became American standard, and 30-40 years after the Japanese Railroad operators (Both JGR, private RR in Islandic Japan and RR operated by colonial authorities in Taiwan and Manchuria) and since 1950s onwards, much of Asia, Africa and the rest of the world EXCEPT Europe.
@@DiscothecaImperialis You forgot about ruSSian SA-3 and lots of couplers proposed to use in Europe. Interesant is the C-AKV coupler. Not so long ago, Europe was divided by an iron curtain. And now European railways still are divided into more than 30 national railways with different signalling and incompatible securing systems. Unification is at the very beginning and it will take decades before one loco will can pass from Burgas to Kiruna without switching between 8 or 9 national securers etc.
