Was here before, but big question. Sometimes carts have one game wanting you to download the other. My question is, is that permanently downloaded to the cart, or the Switch memory?

I really wish Capcom would port the two Maximo games from the PS2 to the Switch. When I think of Halloween, those are two of my absolute favorites. I think a double pack of them on one cart would do big numbers.

A lot of these games often have a normal physical copy in Japan or Asia. Other than that EU Twin Pack, a few Asian market versions existed so you can be on the lookout for those. The Switch is region free, so always check Japan and the wider Asian market for games. When importing physical games I often end up with a Japanese or Asian market version of a game. (Fixing a few typos, with an edit.)

I can see a very narrow situation where I'd be ok with a code in a box and that would be an indie title that wasn't too expensive who could only get a physical box released. I like having the box on the shelf so if it were something truly that I liked and very cheap then I'd go for it. Otherwise, no way.

This is a huge problem for everyone. Basically what they're doing is moving us towards a digital library which is more convenient for them and us. It saves them a ton of money. A side effect of this system is that when libraries expire, we'll have to end up purchasing the game all over a gen or two later on a different console when the company decides to abandon server systems. Only PCs might be spared, since Windows games are generally backward compatible. But just as soon as services like Steam decide that games in our libraries have expired and as a result, they're no longer downloadable, it'll be the same kind of a thing all over. Of course, if they did that, everyone would start pirating classics like never before to compensate. They'd better not mess with our digital libraries like Nintendo has (aren't the Japanese supposed to be honorable?).

If you just buy a code you will be dependent on Nintendo's servers still being online to play it in the future and you tie the game to an account. So those videos are really important.

Code on a card these days... Go anywhere they sell games. Do it with all systems.

What’s even worse are the “physical games” that require you to download the game from the eshop, but won’t play unless the cart is inside the switch. I know the Spyro Trilogy required you to download the second and third games in order to play them.

Code in a box is pointless and a waste of plastic. If I have to download the game I may as well just get it on steam where I have more faith that the game will still be able to be accessed years from now instead of being shackled to a system where if Nintendo so chooses can shut down the server rendering many of these unplayable.

First they sell roms, and now they'll sell you paper that won't be redeemable in the far future when their eshop shuts down, then they'll sell it to you again on the Nintendo McGuffin at full price. This is why they fight that hard against the piracy they keep justifying

If it's only a code in the box, why bother? May as well wait to buy the game digitally when it goes on sale.

It's not that the games will always require an online connection, but let's say you like Sonic Frontiers. You purchased that digitally though... if that game isn't on your Switch at the end of the system's life cycle there's likely no way to redownload it on that system unless the next system Nintendo releases has backwards compatibility and allows that game to continue existing through it. That said, I do check for any physical editions for games that I can get and want to own. That said, Nintendo hasn't been as scummy about selling a game with no cartridge in it for everything I have bought. I've been real careful about buying physical vs. digital for games I want to keep. I think the last time I got conned was actually for the Guild Wars Game of the Year edition years ago. They offered I believe Guild Wars in the base disc with Prophecies, but the Factions and Nightfall part were like a dlc code along with some bonus pet dlc. If I attempted to download it today on a computer I might not be able to access Factions and Nightfall but maybe only Prophecy I think because of how they handled that. Ultimately, I do hope Nintendo keeps doing cartridges because they're generally better to keep and store than the discs playstation and Xbox use. And I haven't usually seen them fail abysmally.

The real question is why did Nintendo even design the cards for Switch to prevent piracy if they were just going to use digital codes instead? That's just gonna make it easier to emulate them and promote more piracy as a result.
