Hello! I am new to this channel. I appreciate you posting this. I'm not so sure of hiring candidates right off the street with no experience. I have researched online hiring platforms and none have stated they would hire with no formal education in the surgical technology field. All stated that the candidate hiring requirements were a degree from a surgical tech program.

Theres a huge shortage of CST's where I work. My employer is currently offering full scholarships to employees to go to ST school and allowing them to work 12 hrs a week while still paying them for 40hrs in exchange for agreeing to work for 2yrs as a CST after graduation. Theyre paying 28/hr. But they are deff NOT hiring people with no training or exp.

At our hospital they offer the surgical program. We have to interview for the program to get in . I’m an SPD TECH thinking of applying for the program next year. We have a lot of knowledge when it comes to trays and surgical instruments. The benefit of this program is that we dont pay anything out of pocket and we get paid while in training.

The best training is on the job training and everyone has to start off somewhere. You prefer the positions to not be filled at all and be extremely short staff or hire someone who can get training and be successful at the job ?

Funny how came across this video. I was doing research on surgical tech jobs and when i went to see job openings .... It literally sounded like .. they would train you on the job!! With the stipulation ,that you would get your certs etc LATER!! And i was like, I must be tired because that couldn't be true....😮. I also saw another job for phlebotomy but again... They would train you on the job. No experience needed 😮.... This is in Chicago.

Honestly surgical tech school was almost a waste of time. I learned everything I know on the job. Thankfully I went to surgical tech school before you needed an associates. My program from start to getting hired was less than a year. You really want to be a good surgical tech? Go work at a trauma center, you’ll learn WAY more than tech school could ever teach you. All surgical tech school really needs to be is teaching you the instruments, teaching you sterile technique, and doing fake surgeries in lab. Everything else is a waste of time.

I went to school for med assistant and couldn't find a job when moved states so I went back to cna. Health care is crazy these days. LPNs are DONs that's crazy. Facilities with only one RN on staff. That's bonkers!

I was just about to ask that too. I think she said a certification is valid, but people tend to use the term the wrong way. People will use it interchangeably with either diploma/degree. Hopefully this helps.

After watching your video, I'm not sure I want to do it because I don't think it's fair to make more money than the person who is responsible for training you. As a nurse, I think it is an open door for jealousy and animosity. What do you think?

I, too, am a traveler. Been teching for close to 20 years now. Back in the day LPNs were given the opportunity for on OJT for only small cases. Boob jobs, carpet tunnels, and minor washouts of feet and things. But recently I worked at a facility that didn't require their techs to be certified (which is a whole other issue in itself) and hired some random person with no medical background. She was by no means an idiot but she was being forced to learn big ortho and spine cases. As well as robots and trauma. She was always carrying her folder which was filld with notes and very eager to learn all for a lesser salary the her coworkers of course. Despite her good efforts. She was very unsafe. It was very hard for her to grasp the idea of the differences between clean and sterile. On that alone she would of been fired in week two. But because the hospital hired her specifically for OJT mistakes are allowed with her. Specimens were tossed, cross contamination for A&P repairs dealing with bowel. Very sad. Facilities like this need to loose their surgery license

Lmao i get the frustration of going to school for 2 years to become a ST, but it simply just goes to show that with the right on the job training, dependent upon time, who’s training you, how quickly a person can learn, etc. going to school for this profession (along with a plethora of others) is not necessarily MANDATORY or even needed, yet, just a waste of time & money. Yea unfortunately, It sucks for the ones who did have to go to school before staffing was an issue but shit lol another person win is not your loss.
