The final ratio in reverse is 6:1. The only way to reverse it is to spin the motor around and use the fan side to bolt an adapter on for the clutch. However, at the time there was not a good quality adapter to use. It still ran 32mph so that was plenty for me.

Oh I’m sorry.. so, going forward (cart is actually in reverse) the gear ratio is right at 9:1.

That’s exactly why I do this mod. To give the motor more rpm and throttle input to pull the high speed gears that are installed.

I don’t go through nivel, they are really expensive.. call a company in AZ called Apache gear. You can google them. Small company but great products.

Yes, it changes both forward and reverse ratios.

Sweet. I'm planning on putting a 420cc in my DS. I have the clockwise rotating fe290. The 420 is counter clockwise meaning I'll have to use reverse to go forward and reverse is way lower geared than forward. Hopefully the 8:1 set makes up for that.

@@ROFLCOPTERS92honestly I would go ahead and do the 6:1 gears. Depending on how fast you want to go of course.. with the 6:1 it changes the reverse to 6:1 but the forward gear to about 9:1. I know it’s confusing running reverse to go forward and such. That’s what I did in this cart and at 4000rpms running reverse to go forward I was right at 32mph.

Cool! Yea I love the extra speed.. if you want to go to 75-90w gear oil it will eliminate the wine from the gears. Just a little trick I’ve learned along the way.

Check the throttle stop adjustment(it’s on top of the rear axle on the opposite end of the arm where your putting the zip tie) the other option would be taking up the floor mat and adjust some of the slack out of the throttle. Sounds like the throttle is getting pulled, but not completely.

@@ON20LBS Thank you for the suggestions...I have adjusted the throttle stop so the next thing to try is the slack in the throttle/pedal itself...I am just a novice , so hope this isn't too difficult ......am happy to try it

@@MarvinDufner it’s not too bad at all. After the floor is up you’ll see an access plate that pops off. Then you’ll see two 11mm nuts. What you’ll be doing is spinning the nuts toward the front of the cart. Just do a few turns at a time (maybe 5 turns) then test drive. Careful because the tighter you go then the faster it will want to take off. Ideally after I’m done adjusting you will see about 6-7 threads on the adjustment rod poking past the nut facing the front of the cart.

This set actually only replaces the input and secondary gear. The ring gear stays the same. So I put the input gear and secondary out of this cart in another cart but had to buy a HP ring gear to complete the set. There is a guy on the golf carts modified page on Facebook that sells the whole sets. Can’t remember his name though.

Yea it’s normal. It’s just how the gears are cut to achieve the ratio needed in the space inside the rear axle. My solution for this is to run 75-90w gear oil instead of the 30wt that the manual calls for. It makes it much more quiet.

@@DouglasRhodes-nk2vs oh yea, everyone wants to go faster! I’ve done several carts that roll around bay St. Louis.. however, most people pass on the upgrade because of the cost..!! It’s a bit labor intensive and takes time to do it right.

On a lifted 19 onward you should se close to 30mph before the limiter will kick in. Non lifted is about 24mph or so. The Yamahas actually have a smaller engine but they have a taller gear ratio to get a few more mph out of them. But yes the next step is the gears. Is your cart lifted?

Yep, it would hit about 50mph in reverse.. but I’m never going to try. 32mph forward was plenty fast. I wanted a good balance of top speed and acceleration.

Sometimes.. the older the cart the harder of a time it seems the bearings resist going back on. Usually it’s just a few taps with a hammer and wooden block.

Any advice for getting the dowel out of the old differential gear?

@@brenth560 they usually pull out pretty easy.. I use a towel or rag then a pair of vice grips super tight .. twist and pull.. it’s important to twist.

I also have the 6 seater onward. So you looped a zip tie through that spring preventing it from stretching? Essentially making the spring one solid component

Hey, yea .. first Make sure the fuel pump is working. When you first turn the key you should be able to hear it turn on and prime for a few seconds. Next check the coil wire that’s coming out of the back of the block. I think it’s yellow. It should be putting out 5volts when you hit the gas. It’s what tells the computer to fire the injector. The rpm limiter on yours is inside the ECU (computer).. so there is no bypassing it.

Contact Apache gear. They are in Arizona but ship gears all over.

What about the flywheel? Are you running the oem club car flywheel?

Yes that’s what I was thinking too would be helpful to actually see it to make more sense but it was a good video an explanation nevertheless

@@juliogange5274 if the cart was built before 1997 it will be forward to go forward..but 1997 to 2015 you will be running reverse to go forward.

If you had all the parts I would prob charge about $500 to put it all in and have it running. $500 extra if you wanted to do high speed gears. It takes some fine tuning to get everything to work well together.

Nope, it idles at about 1k rpm’s and the clutch does not engage until about 1700 rpm’s. So I can switch back and forth without an issue.

I’ve never done it , just because the older rear axles are easy to bypass by just loosening that bolt. But I see no issue with the gear mechanism being removed. I’ve thought about doing it on the newer rear axles.. but it was so firmly mounted in there that I just leave them in..

The gas onward is a bit different considering the axle is bolted to the engine mount. It’s a little harder to get the rear axle out but it’s the same after that. A non lifted gas onward would see the same mph after the gear swap. If the governor is bypassed it would see 35-36mph. In one of my other videos I put gears in an older style gas rear axle. Maybe that will help you. I’ll put a link up.

It’s actually closer to a 9:1. The factory ratio is about a 11:1.

It’s a different gear set because the rear axle is different. But with a high speed gear in the gas cart it will do 35mph on stock tires and no lift kit when the rpm limiter kicks in. I would not recommend it if your cart is already lifted. With a throttle adjustment on the lifted cart you can get about 27mph.

Just curious why you would not recommend it on a lifted onward? Mine is factory lifted. I don't know if it was you or not, but I did see someone with a gas 6 seater (pretty sure factory lifted) with the high speed gears on it. He had the same gps set up as you.

Yea a gear is going to be your best option with your cart. Your cart should do 20mph factory and accelerate really well. There are three different acceleration settings on those carts that a dealer can program for you.. other than that there is Really no way to upgrade the electronics on it. Where you located? Anywhere near south Mississippi by chance?

@@dshindo1837 I’m not exactly sure on part number but you can call a company named Apache Gear. They are based out of arizona. Tell them what you have and they will give you what you need. That’s where we get them from.

​@ON20LBS I wanted to chime in on the speed settings.. from factory they come in sport mode which is the fastest setting. It's actually at 19.2mph, not 20. I'd go for the cheap base model, lead acid, DC motor, then upgrade from there. Factory lithium HP and the lead acid HP carts are a bit more complicated to get the most out of.

Is it on the back side of the engine? I’m Pretty sure that goes to the oil sensor on the back of the block. Is your oil light on?

It’s an 8:1 ratio from Apache gear in Arizona and a 180 amp hour lithium pack from evolution golf carts.

Just the gear will get you 32mph if the cart is lifted on 23in tires. But the lithium will give you much better acceleration.
