Diagnosing Capital-ISM—6 STRUCTURAL defects—Living Between World 5.8
Capital-ism is back in the crosshairs in ways we haven’t seen, at least the US, in my lifetime. From disaffected youth to the editorial pages of the Wall Street Journal, critiques abound.
There's a rising momentum for reform, but the many “reform capitalism" initiatives-democratic capitalism, stakeholder capitalism, ecological capitalism, conscious capitalism, multi-capitalism-fail to rigorously address the structural defects of this only 500 year old “system“ that so dominates our lives that it is “easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism.”
Well, these days we find more and more people actively imagining the end of the world.
And since “prescription without diagnosis is malpractice,” I've been thinking deeply into a rigorous diagnosis and the prescriptions that it might point to, examining the structural defects of the global capital-ist system that will-depending on your point of view-either destroy us or save us.
That's where this month's Living Between Worlds "conversation for possibility" started. Big turnout. Hard thinking. “Brainwriting,” with a dozen break-out groups discussing and scribing their thoughts on “what would nature do?”-or rather “what did nature do?”-in the course of its 3.8 billion years of open-source R&D-that could provide clues of how to overcome the six structural defects of capital-ism: Accumulation without limit; Extraction without reciprocity; Alienation without care; Abstraction without ground; Generation without regeneration; Privatization without solidarity.
Have a look, see where the conversation went, and let us know:
- What, if anything, shifted for you while watching this video?
- What ideas would you offer that might enrich the conversation?
And join us next time, on the third Wednesday of every month from 12:00-1:30pm Pacific time. Register here: bit.ly/LivingBetweenWorlds.

Interventions & Leverage Points - Living Between Worlds 5.7

What happens when you use Donella Meadows' “12 places to intervene in a system"* not just as a high-level strategic or even philosophical guide, but as a diagnostic lens applied to your own actions in the world, or the actions of your organization, or… In the midst of metacrises, my thoughts often return to Donella Meadows, one of the authors of the "Limits To Growth" report more than 50 years ...
How do Minds Change? - Living Between Worlds 5.6

What a great call! Our topic-"How minds change” (Or "Changing how we think about change")-generated a great turnout and very active and thoughtful participation. It was a rich conversation, and we’re grateful to all of you who joined us (and missed those of you who couldn’t). Here's the thing: All of us live in taken-for-granted-and-invisible assumptions about how minds change. And how they don...

You may think that it's a choice between talk and action-especially in this meta-crisis world. But actually there's no action without talk. So if you'll just get to know these five "words that _create_ worlds," you'll discover that you can be stunningly more effective in your conversations-for possibility, for relationship, for action-with your colleagues, friends, and loved ones, and yourself....
Living Between World 5.5: Perspective

This month's Living Between Worlds-with Grace, Dignity, and Power, a "conversation for possibility," is nestled in the midst of a bunch of five-multiple sustainability anniversaries: 75 years. 50 years. 20 years. 15 years. 10 years. 5 years. For years-decades-the organizing principle of my work at Natural Logic has been: “How can business prosper by embedding the laws of nature at the heart of enterprise?” (Prosperity in the etymological sense of pro-spera, toward one's hope, toward thriving-as well as the modern sense of toward the money.) I'm increasingly living in a different question: "What might it be like if we did business, ...

Over the past four years, more than 700 people have engaged in these monthly conversations about the challenge of Living Between Worlds. I wonder if any of the folks on the call are familiar with needs-based economy? Aka often as Ghandian Economy? That seems to match natural systems' principles of reciprocity, grounding, regeneration, care and solidarity. Also, I didn't hear anyone mention Participatory Budgeting as a strategy in business, orgs, or networks, but it's one I thought of.

Another version of solidarity could be seen in the care that trees and plants take of each other. Sending chemicals and nutrients to sick members, sending chemicals for pest deterrent when pets are detected, canopy space. Things like that. Update… this came up later in the convo.

FYI What I’ve been doing, hoping to help, is getting to the bottom of why physics represents life with equations and life behaves nothing like equations. It’s a great story, explaining why people today are so confused by life, and trying solutions making our problems ever worse!

Of course, it takes a different method to get nature to tell us what she really cares about that causes her to be on the verge of destroying our next great civilization, like the one’s before.

We’re ready for a shift, a life change, from a compulsive global growth maximizing system, in the process of destroying the resources it relies on… to a caregiving system, converting the purpose of organizing the same resources, for the purpose of seeking a good life, rather ever more power over life.

To answer the intervention point observationally, you could ask what it is in our present world that makes it so open ti intervention of a mobster fabulist like Trump? That would get people thinking about what system intervention is really about.

So nice to hear your meaning for “Living Between Worlds.” My puzzle with Donnella’s list of intervention points has always been that they they were a quick list she wrote down when asked, and most or all don’t refer to tipping points, but outcomes. We should talk about how people can open themselves to opportunities.

Dear Gil, Excellent interview including comments & questions. My only disappointment is the ongoing insistence that "if only we tried real capitalism..." things could be better. Crying out for more diverse viewpoints won't bring in the perspective of those who have been marginalized and brutalized by the logic of capitalism -- as it is really implemented in our world. True economic and political democracy are really incompatible with the basic assumptions and philosophical underpinnings of capitalism, including (but not limited to) enclosure of the commons (aka private property rights), neo-darwinian competition as the driver of evolution, reductionist science as the only valid form of knowledge, and more. I don't oppose any of the "buying time" tactics of efficiency or working with enlightened businesses to appeal to their self-interest. It seems abundantly clear to me that the grow or die logic of capitalism inherently requires expansion (aka colonialism) which inevitably means theft of land and labor, violence, and other unspeakable crimes against humanity and the planet. I'll stop here -- but am happy to engage the discussion, and know you and your network offer a wealth of brilliant and creative ideas -- we go way back! Respect and gratitude, Grace

If I were a leader with influence I could imagine applying some of the suggestions herein. I hope that is what I would do. But in everyday life I am not a leader nor a person of influence, yet I care deeply about climate change. When I bring up the subject, though, friends and people in general shy away from discussion. I know this is not necessarily because they do not want change, but because they feel implementing that change is either beyond them or requires they give time to a cause in a direct way--which interrupts their lives. So like Klaus Mager I want to know better how to alter that outlook--not by persuasion, which is forceful, but by explaining the climate needs in a cooperative way that they cannot help but feel personally. It is essential to leave anything adversarial out of the equation. Otherwise, the conversation is swept into a political divide and my effort makes no difference at all. If I could discover how to negotiate a point of view that reached them personally, that didn't stop or shut out the conversation, it would be grand, for it thus offers them a way to navigate the cause with enthusiasm, with a desire to know more, with a belief we are meant to solve this together in an overriding cooperative way--to recognize we are a participant in the earth's presence, and that we deserve to experience this with joy.

Actually, we are already in climate collapse, When you are felling a tree, and the wedges are in the cut, the tree is already in the process of falling even though it hasn't moved yet. No one designs institutions. Institutions evolve independently of either central planning or deliberation. I'm always amazed when people pull out the "don't let the good be the enemy of the perfect" when it is the other way around. The perfect is the enemy of the good. Believing that the next generation are going to be the superheroes who solve our dilemmas is just another Deux ex Machina in a long line of ersatz divine interventions that are always going to save us from ourselves as the very last moment or, as the saying goes, in the nick of time. The people who WILL solve the problems we face aren't the ones who are out in the streets. They are sitting in classrooms and laboratories trying to figure out how to get their ideas funded. The most important thing you said discloses an important fact: Governments are no longer in charge of their own destinies. Corporations are now the driving force behind the status quo which means they are also the driving force behind change, and the financial corporations will drive all others.
