My last three day rockhounding and tent camping outing for 2024 at my “spot”. Wishing you a Merry Christmas. Walk with me as I gather chalcedony nuggets near Coyote Lake and Alvord Mtn. in the southern California high dessert.
Rockhounding Fossils in Indiana

I was heading back West from visiting family in Pittsburgh and passing through Louisville, KY and I saw a sign about fossils so I pulled in for a quick doggy pit stop and to see if I could locate some fossils along the edges of the Ohio River.

What’s In The Barrel

Join me as I empty a 10 pound barrel of tumbled dessert agate and petrified wood. Float from the central Mojave region in California. Most of this rough will take months to finish but they’re already looking very promising, lots of variety. I’ve never shared my rotary tumbler barrel load up with you. I use an MJR Tumbler with DIY’d replacement barrels. It’s too hot in the desert for “Rockin Mojave Minerals” so let me show you how I load and “barrel dress” my rough in my tumble shed. Big ole stump.
The fossils by the Falls of Ohio look amazing, especially those horn-shaped ones. Nature's beauty is astounding.
Thanks for taking a look and commenting. I agree, that’s why I try to get out there to rockhound as often as possible to see all the amazing creations.
New subscriber! I drove by your camp and you about a year ago or so and asked if all was good and we exchanged thumbs up. I usually look for quartz clusters by day and love to cook over the fire as well at night (not as well as a pro like you!). I’ve found chalcedony, seam agate, agate nodules, and one 6lb 1/4 geode with nice quartz points out in that area. Good luck and I will be watching more! Take care
Wow, thanks for watching and commenting. It is a great place to camp and rockhound. There’s a great deal of variety. You can concentrate on finding one type or another.
Loving that glow!!!!
@ I’ve finally collected enough of those nuggets to fill a tumbler barrel. I’ll start that soon and video the 2-3 month tumble.
Wow look at the Subie pack up really good! I miss those days of taking my All Wheel Drive Mitsubishi Lancer camping! 2025 will have more rocks than ever. Stay safe!
You too. Great to hear from you. Thanks for dropping me a note. Lots of stuff but it makes life comfortable out there.
I also walked way out there when the water was low. Fossils fossils everywhere. Plus many specimens embedded in the larger rock-walls near the shore. It is a really neat place to visit. As you shared, signs are posted to not take anything and the rangers were highly enforcing that rule. There was a nice spot where the park dumped what looked like dredge from river or loose stone pile and encouraged people to find fossils which they could take home. But only from this special pile.
I agree, it's a great spot for fossil hunting and a good place to learn the proper ways to collect.
Those are horn corals Rockin Mojave. From the late Ordovician to the Middle Permian eras according to Wikipedia. From the inland seas of North America of that time period.
Thank you Rick. I've seen a fellow Rockhounder find these horns in Michigan when he's out around the 'Lakes" areas. Not sure which lake or location. His channel is called Michigan Rocks.
@Gene.Guazzo That would be Rob. Some of these horn corals when silicified and or agatized can be beautiful when polished or cut and polished. Cutting i can do, polishing I'm working on.
Your right Pliocene is way too young for seabed floors. That’s the general age of the petrified wood I find in parts of the Mojave. Thank you for the correction and knowledge gained. I saw many many imbedded examples of all kinds of stuff very interesting!
@@Gene.Guazzo Wikipedia can be a wonderful thing at times Gene.
Subscribed. RHA recommended you in his post.
Thank you very much for your recommendation and viewing my channel. I have a lot of editing to do but I did manage to get some new videos of my travels and some rockhounding while traveling back from Pittsburg to visit family during the holidays.
There is a lot of really cool fossils there when the water level is down in the late fall. I j have some fossils I think are from there that I found down river on the bank near Otter creek. If your still in the area go check out “Pope Lick Park” in east Louisville. Check out “Created Rocks with Dan the Rock Man” UA-cam channel.. I gave him directions he made a video on that place. Just subbed. Look forward to seeing your future content.
Thank you for watching and commenting. Unfortunately it was a quick stop as we were coming back across the country. I mostly rockhound volcanic material out in the Mojave desert for tumbling but, this spot will always be on my return list probably next year when I head back East to visit family. Thanks for the location tips. Can’t wait to give it a look again.
Thank you for the tip on Pope Lick Park, I'll check it out!
I’d like to thank a new subscriber who was kind enough to let me know I had made a big mistake in calling the city in the background Indianapolis when in fact it was Louisville, KY… his home town! He was even gentlemanly enough to subscribe to my channel. So… I fixed my mistake and reposted this video. Wish I had had more time and better light and more subscribers such as yourself sir. Thank you.
Just picked up one of these tents always wanted one. Came across one unused from a divorcee. Was a deal i couldn't pass up. Thanks for posting the take down video. Super helpful.
That’s awesome! You got a great deal!
Update… I did have a blowout. The barrel did its job and caught the slurry sludge overflow. It dried and I scraped it a bit and overturned the barrel. tapped it out and reloaded. I bought some 7x5/8” rubber bands and wrapped one around the lid. Haven’t had any future spill overs, less liquid helps also.
Beautiful honey. Great job! You still got it
Thank you ❤You’re always there for me.
Nice! Did you see any arrowheads?
Thanks for checking out the video. No, not here but at another location several miles West of here I found a quartz point with a broken tip and a serrated scraper.
I'm sorry to tell you this, but you have been making a major design mistake with all your designs; the motor should be FLOATING with the upper part and the barrel, NOT attached to the base, that is what the springs are for - to allow the motor to vibrate with the only thing attached to the base are the springs!
Thank you for making a comment. You are correct. I have been experimenting with this method. It has great/good action, but I still wanting to build others to add to my tumbling tools. I'll take the spare one I have and rebuild it like you suggested. I love tinkering with this stuff. It's too hot to get out to rock so this building and rebuilding has been fun. I'm thinking of trying to build a vibratory tumbler like the Lot O next.
@@Gene.Guazzo This is a good example of how to build one: ua-cam.com/video/1sAXDpyjUvQ/v-deo.html
I just got my springbar 140 so thank you for this break down
Thanks for watching. This tent manufacturer is the best!
Glad you survived the heat.
Yup, just me and the mules were stupid enough to be out there in that heat.
Thank for watching. Do you rockhound much? I mostly work the areas along the Calico fault line. It’s about a 2 hr ride out there for me.
I hate when things happen and need to Mcgeyver the hell out of things. Good to see you got out.
Thanks Eljefe. Always have a plan B
Good to know we aren’t the only ones who go out in hot weather! Maybe one day we can meet up and rock hound together with #Rocklickersadventure
Very nice . Thank you
Thank you for commenting. I prefer the flint and steel method. Out here I use pieces of desert agate to strike with. There’s plenty of that were I Rockhound.
Looks very comfy and cozy!
Thank you, it's for sure cozy. Best time of year to Rockhound in the desert! Feels great to come back and warm up in the tent. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I would enjoy a review of that shower/outhouse, if you have the time.
You bet. Thank you for asking and watching. Well it’s a Joolca. We tried two other types previous to this one. Flimsy describes both. This can handle the desert winds no problem. Great ventilation and pockets for clean and dirties. There a good floor. It’s sturdy. We use it as a shower and bathroom. The company offers shower equipment options and two sizes. Easy to pop up and take down. Stores compact and in a good bag. My wife loves it and that gets me out more often. Worth the money.
@@Gene.Guazzo Wife approved is the highest seal of approval. ;)
Thanks for putting this up. This is more useful than the put-up videos. My only difference in approach might be to leave half the stakes in, until the first fold, and then take them up as needed for the other folds, in order to keep the floor dimensions taught longer and for securing the tent against the wind. I live on the East Coast so grass in almost always under foot and humidity is the challenge, but I can really see the need for the under-tarp for your conditions. That gritty dirt and sand must be quite a challenge. I'm also curious if you've been drawn to the idea of a hot-tent at all one day?
I’m originally from the East Coast. Yes I’d love to have a Springbar hot tent! Thank you for watching and commenting. Please check out my set-up for winter camping in the upper desert. Short video. My wife is pretty comfy in this set up. Here’s the link, Springbar Tent-Family Camper, Cold Weather Set-Up ua-cam.com/video/XCswcUVP8xY/v-deo.html
nice 🦝
Thanks, I always carry some fat wood. Always catches a spark.
This is awesome! I have resisted putting a tumbler into an enclosure because of the heat. A fan is the perfect solution! In your case you also have the benefit of containment if you would ever have a blowout. All the slurry would be in the bottom of your garbage can! Nice work! :)
It took awhile to come up with the idea. My neighbor was really thankful… so was my wife! Thanks for watching.
What part do you go hounding at?
Ancient Lake Manix region. Areas between route 40 & 15 north of the Calico Mountains. Thank you for watching. I just posted another video of finding more of the calcedony amber colored nuggets.
I need to clarify… in all of my Step 1 loads I use 10 Tablespoons of 60/90 grit in a 10 Pound Barrel per week. It will usually take 12 weeks to reduce enough rough down to Step 2 quality. By step 2 I want no cracks or pits. Steps 2-4 take roughly three weeks. Step 5 Borax for 24 hrs. Finally, three days of concentrate dish soap.
Hey y’all an update to the build, I took the old 1/2 HP tumbler out of the yellow “sound proof” barrel and replaced it with the new 1/12 HP tumbler model. Stealth tumbling, no noise complaints from our next door neighbors.
The pole idea for tucking is a good idea. 👍 I'm gonna use thar!
So much easier to roll up. I just kind of fell into the idea after the first time I took it down. Thanks for watching.
I'll try that method this weekend
Thank you for watching. Let me know how it went for you.
I enjoyed your adventure.☝.Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching. I appreciate your comment.
thank you so mcuh. this is really helpful.
Thank you for watching I’m glad it was helpful. I really love this tent it holds up to high desert winds, it’s not noisy either.
What is that heater?
Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner, lots of campus catering over the last week. It is manufactured by Campy Gear, Little Chubby model. There “was” a larger model, Chubby. I bought this in 2021 off Amazon. I did a little research before responding to you to see if it was still available… it appears to me that the original company may have sold to another. The same brand name but the logo has been changed and the current version of my model looks nothing like mine. Mine feels built tuff but the reviews on the new model are bad. I did see one on eBay, used like mine. I love mine. Hope this helps! I would have loved to recommend it.
@@Gene.Guazzo What is the rated btu output ... if you know it, please? Does it run on propane or on iso butane?
@@WayWordWay It runs on propane. there are some similar models out there. I put a tea kettle on the top for my coffee and to add some humidity to the tent since it's so dry in the upper dessert. I can run this on a 20 lbs. tank for 25-30 hrs. depending upon full blast or being conservative. I'm not in front of it right now but I believe it is about 8000-9000 BTU's. I like the option to place a pot of water or cook some food on the top. I listened to some of your band's music yesterday, very cool stuff.
@@Gene.Guazzo Thanks for that information, :)
You're very much welcome Gene; And thank you for Sharing 👍👋✌️👊🤣
Hola muchas gracias are una. De esa maquina
Gracias por ver mi vídeo. Funciona muy bien. Tuve un problema, el motor se quemó. Construí otro igual y lo metí en el barril como el primero.
Hi Rockin Mojave Minerals 👋🤣👍 weve got HEAVY RAIN AND Thunderstorms last 2 day's here in South Georgia yesterday and today
I’m originally from MD, no stranger to rain but it’s been unusually wet in the Mojave. Thanks for watching.
I have an Outfitter but looking into a bigger tent (just looking into it). I noticed this tents sides go far out as opposed to a more upright wall style the Outfitter has and I think Skyliner. What I love is the general ease of putting up and taking down, even alone its easy.
That style came out after we purchased ours. The Family Camper’s sloping side do cut down on inside square footage but I’d be curious to see the side by side comparison during a strong wind storm and I think noise would be louder as well, you know how canvas can be. Plenty of volume vertically as well. Check out my video showing how we outfit the inside of our tent for winter camping comfort.
Hi Gene 👋 Awesome Rock Tumbler 🥃 👋😃👍 Gene I wish I had a Rock Tumbler like yours BRO!!!! 👍🤣
Looks cool I agree but it didn’t work as well as Model #2. Check out the vids on the new and improved build. Thank you for watching.
I love me some lavic jasper! I’m definitely going once more this year before the heat kicks in. It was mind boggling parking out there, opening the car door and seeing jasper scattered everywhere
First time I went I opened my car door and there was jasper right there and I wasn’t even near the collection site!
Hey Gene! I have tumbled some of that before and it tumbles great. At the time, I think that was the shiniest batch of rocks I had ever done. Have you started a fire with that omaroluk yet?
Hey Rob! Thanks for taking a look. I agree, the outcome was awesome. That location was my first outing, a little over three years ago. Your videos got me hooked, no joke. Thanks for the time you put into your videos for us all to enjoy.
Oh, wow I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to let you know how the Omaroluk worked. Great! Making a fire using a bow-drill is one of the harder ways for me to get a fire going. I’ve been waiting for my next overnight rockhounding adventure to video a rockhound making a campfire using it. It’s very cool to have such a unique stone!
@@Gene.Guazzo I'm glad it worked well for you!
Model #2 has been running for 24 hrs. No overheating and no noise complaints from my neighbors! I’ve got a mixture of petrified wood and some dessert agate in there vibrating on step #2. Small amount of grit and small amount of water. I spent a few hours adjusting the load size, grit and water watching the action. The magic mix for this tumbler/motor was 1.5 T of (220) grit to 2 oz. of water. I take my rough down to almost finished before I move on to the remaining steps, usually about two and a half to three months in the rotary tumbler.
i have some beautiful rocks of Jasper. Didn't know what it was until years later.
The thumbnail for this video was the result of a full day of rockhounding at that location. It’s some of the most satisfying rough to polish.
