      @@amitev Firmware 2.4 installed. String resonance got worst, with super short decay and buggy ( in long sustained passages it just quits ), although the notes sustain, the effect just vanishes. Sympathetic resonance is a nice thing, but not accurate at all, 8ve and 5th works, but the third don't. A real sympathetic resonance works almost with every interval, at different degrees, and harmonic results. Duplex resonance is not much better than before, sounding just like a short reverb through a high pass filter. Repeated notes got better, that is the best thing about this update, it saved the day. Playability is in the end the most important thing and in this aspect, the Numa X still delivers. But they should rework their sounds from the ground up, starting from the piano samples ( yes, they use samples, the modeled part is just for the resonances ) and going through its synthesys arquitecture, and finally through the moddeling part, that's why I consider it a great controller, but don't use its sounds. The Rhodes however, are completelly modeled, and they work very well!

    • @FaustoFerreira
      @FaustoFerreira 17 днів тому

      @@kevindorry2869 Never tryed it. However, based on my research, there is still a reason that Casios are not even considered as pro level instruments. It looks that they have pretty up to date tech, that they are getting there, but they fail allways on the extra mile. For example, sustain resonance: they have it, but it sounds so unrealistic, failing in the most basic part like decay time, and filtering of the effect, with weird harmonics being prolongued out of place. Sustain of individual notes, better now but still sounding like 2010 entry level digital pianos (even Roland's RD300sx with be better at this). Baddly calibrated sample transitions, with sample switching clearly on wrong velocity values ( extreme example: you are still playing piano, with piano intensity volume, but the sample allready transitioned to mezzoforte, it's a very common mistake and comes from an era where sample memory was scarce and expensive. Today it doesn't make sense anymore, showing only poor sound design, and lack of attention to detail ). Yes you are right, all of this and many other sound design mistakes makes it sound "plastic". The Numa also shares some of this problems, but I think they did a much better job managing the extra mile on sound design given the budget nature of the hardware they were working on.

    Do you have a good process to setup instrument on iPad? I often find it hard to get them play in a consistent response and volume with different midi controller. For example, volume output of instrument, volume of iPad, input gain of mixer/PA then sensitivity setting in instrument and actual midi controller sensitivity. Eg. Korg’s E Piano vs Scarbee’s piano in Korg Module, scarbee is definitely more details with wider dynamic, but it also jump to very high level. And constantly distorted at the peak level when hit hard. This sort of inconsistency is quite frustrating to get a coherent sound.

    • @FaustoFerreira
      @FaustoFerreira Місяць тому

      @@paulyllow You can adjust volume individually for every app, and also inside AUM, Audiobus, Camelot or any other Daw, they have a mixer inside them, or just a simple per track adjustment. Every app is different from their output, so equalize them internally on setup. With some simple setups ( for example, just piano and Hammond gig ) I just use a keyboard with an easy way to change MIDI channel to change sounds, so they have to be equalized to start with. Or just use two keyboards with different Midi channels. Or just use a single app, like Korg Module. In this case you can create a Set List, with several predefined sounds, including simple Layer and split functionality, with independent volume settings for each. Some instruments on Korg Module have steep velocity curves, unfortunatelly the piano type are the worst. Play with the velocity curves in Module Pro to make it more suitable for you and your controller. And tou might sacryfice one effects slot and use a compressor. Some audio interfaces bypass the overall iPad volume, some don't. In that case, the iPad volume should allways be maximum. Finally, on sound check, talk to the sound guy or stage guy to find the correct DI settings. They usually have it on 0 DB, they might need to reduce it.

      Go to Advanced Settings. Turn audio latency ( buffer ) to 256. Turn voice number to 88 or more. Don't use auto. Turn off key animation. Kill every other app running in the background. Enable flight mode. Make sure there's no automatic update going on. I allways do it manually, when I want. Korg Module standalone is power and processor hungry, if you use it as a AUV3 you won't have this issues. If you use it in a Daw, make sure the induvidual Midi tracks polyphony is set correctly ( at least 64 notes for piano playing )

That is inside a Daw or a host like Camelot, with a lot other things going on. Buffer 128 works the same, no difference at all. By default I allways use 256, there's no noticeable latency and it is safer. On iPad pro 2018, 1T, 6Gb, it performs the same, although with less room or other tracks or instruments at the same time.

    How does the overall and the instrument specific sound quality of those apps compare to a single synth like a Yamaha MODX (which can be had comparatively cheap)? Thank you!

    • @FaustoFerreira
      @FaustoFerreira Місяць тому

      There is no overall sound quality to differentiate. The quality of the audio interface might make the most difference here. Any Class Compliant USB interface will work. In some iPad models you have the headphones Jack, that might not be the best, but the cheap Headphones dongle from Apple is really good, if you don't want to carry an audio interface. The ones included on some USB hubs are in general very bad, and might not work well with your good interface, so, use a Hub without headphone jack. As for the apps, the sound quality is different from eachother. In all cathegories of sounds, you will find better on the iPad than in any hardware instrument, including Yamaha, Nord, Korg, Kurzweil, Roland, etc... but you will have to pay the right price for the right apps. You will have to configure your rig, explore and set it up the way you need it. It can be more powerfull and versatile than any hardware synth today. But also much more complex and time consuming. The Yamaha is very good, soundwise. But for me the main attaction of those synths is the simplicity and controll part. You have everything at hand, you have a fixed arquitecture which you need to master, but then it gets very easy to navigate. The iPad possibilities are almost endless, you have to decide for yourself what you want: the convinience of a workstation/stage keyboard or the complexity and extra power of the iPad. Both are good choices, depending on your needs and your character profile.

    23:16 indeed hammond never liked the Leslie speakers, to the point that Leslie gave away the schematics for free and hammond never picked up, it wasn’t until 80s that hammond purchased the Leslie company and then sold it 10 years after. So, hammond completely disregarded the Leslie speaker up to this days. Hammond went as far as to put a proprietary connection to the speaker out to prevent the leslie usage. So, it’s not surprising that they still make a boring leslie effect this days

    • @FaustoFerreira
      @FaustoFerreira Місяць тому

      That would be self sabotage. Do you think Hammond Susuki/ Ik multimedia today are honouring Hammond's vision, making a bad leslie simulator? I just think some do it better than others. That being said, the Leslie simulator on new Hammond clones are not bad at all. The one on the XK5 is quite good and effective. Then there's the matter of taste, and the infinite variation in Leslies today, as well as recording techniques and acoustic environments. Don't think they are neglecting it for tradition's sake. They where far behind when Nord, Crumar, Ventilator competitors came up, but now I think they are just as good. Just each one is unique. As is each lealie and leslie recordings.

But I would think, the Motif XS/XF engine could be more easily transported to an iOS plattform and would still be a great performers or composers tool. If the app would also feature the Motif sequencer, wow 🙂 What do you think is the reason, that Yamaha didn't do it, yet? - they don't believe in the financial prospects? - too difficult? - they don't want to jeopardise/cannibalise their hw synth sales? @followyourpassion8378 I see Korg as an inovative company, driving music technology forward. Although yamaha have done it in the past, it's for me a more conservative company. That being said, Yamaha is incredible bringing the highest standards in every area, from boat engines to the most exquisite concert pianos. Korg is allready deep in the iOS business, you can have all of the 90's and 2000's Korg synths on your iPad. Yamaha sees the ipad as a secundary device to help manage or control their hardware.

      @@followyourpassion8378 Exactly my feelings about iPad. Many complain about the price of the Apple, keyboard, how big and bulky it makes the iPad, or about the pen. I went iPad only because I just love to use touch screen. And it must be exclusive, with my fingers, or it is a big mess: grab the pen, leave the pen, grab the mouse, leave the mouse, type a few words on the keyboard, manage them on the screen, return to the Midi Keyboard... And many functions you can only access with two or more fingers on the screen, no pen or mouse can do it so easily. For typing long text ( which is rarely) I use an external keyboard, either usb or bluetooth, and it is just fine. People looking for an iPad to use it like they use a MacBook are misliding themselfes: buy a laptop instead. Or have both, for different applications. Me? I only need my iPad Pro for 99% of what I do

      With all due respect, you've never played a real Hammond obviously. The B-3X & its Leslie simulator sound more authentic than ANYTHING on the market. This from a guy with 14 Hammonds & 11 Leslies under his belt & a destroyed back. lol.

    • @FaustoFerreira
      @FaustoFerreira Місяць тому

      I also have a destroyed back, from carrying 25+ kgs Rolands, Yamahas, Kurzweils, including flightcases, cables, pedals etc... by myself. Not a specialist on Hammond by any means, but have some experience, as many blues festivals had one for all participants. Love to play on blues festivals because of that! Did some shows with hired Hammonds and recorded on some Hammonds on studio. You see, where I live a real Hammond is an exotic thing, with very few qualified people to maintain it. But I do know about Hammond clones, 30 years on the road. I watched closelly the development of those, and allways thought that the dificult part is the final stage, the amp, the drive, the rotary effect, the propper reverb, the controls, etc... not the dry sound of it. And I still do, although many clones fail immediately on the Chorus/vibrato part, not to mention the percussion, at those the B3x excells. The effect of a real leslie spining on our back is dramatic thing. I really cannot find this drama on B3x. Although I agree it is the most realistic thing out there, I might prefer other less realistic but that comes closer at the final stage to the drama I feel with the real thing. It will allways be a subjective thing. I'm a pianist, what I really know about is pianos, both real and digital, and it's the same thing: there's no consensus among my coleagues, about sound, expressiveness, playability, keyboard feel, etc... You can never get it all with a clone. So you have to choose what you value the most, subjectivelly.
