Abandoned Churches: North Yorkshire

Abandoned, redundant, disused - call them what you like - but these churches have been saved (reprieved?) by organisations ranging from the Churches Conservation Trust to locals. In Part 1 the churches of North Yorkshire are looked at: Upleatham, Robin Hood's Bay, Whorlton, Stanwick, Wensley, Coverham, Vale of the Lune, Pateley Bridge, Studley Royal, Newby Hall, Allerton Mauleverer, Stainburn, ...
Forgotten Spas of Yorkshire
Переглядів 3492 роки тому
We've all heard of Harrogate, Ilkley and Scarborough - but what about Slaithwaite, Askern or Wetherby? They've all had them, but only shone brightly for a very short time - mostly 1820-1890 and then disappeared. Others like Ripon came on far too late 1904/1905 and places like Boston Spa were left behind by the age of steam - although that mode of transport didn't help Goathland (North York Moor...

Railway Stations of Yorkshire
Переглядів 6082 роки тому
The Leeds-Selby line was the first to be built in Yorkshire in 1834 - and some of the original station can still be seen in Selby (more of it in our Selby film). Most of the railways were centred on York, as George Hudson, "The Railway King", mayor of York, saw that it would be a great boon to the city - indeed, the medieval wall was breeched to allow it in. Although today's station, one of Bri...

Their sacrifice will never be forgotten by the people - but it has been by the Oligarchic Establishment. They seek new sacrifice now - and the end of our free and sovereign country. God bless and never surrender.

Used to attend the grain market at the Corn Exchange every Tuesday. It used to be a vast floor , but they seem to have taken away a lot of floor to expose the basement. I remember that there was only one telephone there, and when someone was called, the caretaker used to walk around with a bell and a small blackboard with his name on it. Tramfare was one penny in those days.

We so lucky to live in this beautiful area and we have walked over most of the area of Ryedale and the moors,we know where to go to avoid the popular hot spots that visitors congregate and spoil the peace and tranquility with cars noisy motorbikes and large walking groups👍🤗Which hostelries to have a meal without having to queue 👍🤗

This video brought back memories because I used to visited the area with my late girl-friend who died of cancer in 2018. We walked around Malham Tarn and down Mastiles Lane. We drive past Kilnsey Crag many times on our way to Grassington and other places. Thanks fo making this video. You added and interesting and thoughtful commentary. Thanks for uploading.

The light house at Withernsea is not where it is because of erosion. Quite the reverse actually. It was built where it stands because of anticipated erosion that has never happened, hence it is so far in land.

Gate in these places does not refer to the actual gates, for these are called Bars, because they bar the road, Gate means Street. It comes from the Norse meaning 'way'.

My maternal grandmother knitted me one, in royal blue, no less, when I was a young teenager. She was from North Wales, and grew up in a small coastal town, her father being a labourer on local hill farms. There was still some fishing a few miles further up the coast. She knitted it in this manner, without reference to a pattern. It wouldn't fit me now, as I'm much taller than I was then, but this video brought it vividly to mind.

I'd love to see the old Christopher Pratt's store building again on North Parade. I've not been in since just before it closed in 2002/3. Apparently aircraft parts were manufactured and assembled inside during WW2, using the giant sized workshop at the back.

Bradford has become the expression of the people who arrived here from South Asian countries in the 1960s. What you import you become and its why the city centre is full of ugly signage and a general shanty town ghetto appearance. It's not lack of money in itself, because you could give them millions of pounds to work with, and they would still express what they have already created back home in parts of India, Pakistan or Bangladesh etc.
