Hey guys,
I am a a new Ham Radio operator K3EE and this is my journey through the ham world. I will be doing gear and radio reviews, unboxing, status updates on equipment that I am using and just random videos on my radio activities. I currently love doing POTA activations and working with basic supplies in the field.

Digirig DR 891 and a Yaesu FT 891 This might make me like digital modes.
I got the new Digirig DR 891 in and decided to try and put it on the air. I don't have all the bugs out of the system yet, but I do have it functioning. I could use some help, but I thought I would walk you all through my process.

Helping a Friend with his tower

Today I went over to a friends house to help him lower his tower for the first time sense it was installed. He wanted to do some preventative maintenance while it was down and also fix his COAX that got twisted. When we started we figured out that there was a bigger problem waiting. His tower is a US Tower Corp. 40 foot extendable with a hinge system. No guy wires is the best part!

Great video! I'm installing mine next week. Thanks, pal.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I am. I went out yesterday and did my first digital POTA activation! Thanks for watching.
So proud of my genius ham head brother Paul Combs!!! Thank you Battleship NORTH CAROLINA radio volunteers and staff!!!
He did a great job! For more info on how you can operate from the Battleship North Carolina please go to AC4RC.ORG.
I LIKE YOUR Very good video and your explanation! "73"
Thanks! 😃I try. I fail and I try some more. But I always want to show the whole truth. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the reply
No problem at all. Hope you have a great week and thanks for watching.
Tried to reach you from US-2409 but some fellow hams were operating at 14.281 just across the parking lot and it was a no-go. I will try again another day…
Let me know when and I’ll head to a park and we can have a nice P2P QSO. Hope the rest of your trip is great!!!
How do you have your Radio power connected? I notice its power didn't drop when you started the truck , Thanks
I have it wired directly to one of my trucks batteries. The up side is it’s always ready to go. Downside is that I can drain the battery. Thanks for watching.
I have an Atas120A, You mentioned you bonded your radio to the frame, does that make a difference, Thanks KD9WTH 73
I took a grounding wire from the antenna mount to the frame and then tied the radios grounding lug with a wire to the same bolt on the frame.
Thanks ,I'll do that then ,KD9WTH 73
Are you plugged into pc
No. It’s unplugged anytime I am powering the radio on. Thanks for watching.
I really wish it was capable of at least 10 watts like the IC-705. I know, it probably doesn't make a big difference, but just something that would help me make a decision.
I can appreciate that. I thought the same thing too. But it looks like they sacrificed battery life to watts
The IC-705 with the included BP-272 battery pack only puts out a max of 5 watts. It will do up to 10 watts with a larger battery or 13.8vdc. The FTX-1F with the internal battery does 6 watts, and up to 10 watts with a external battery or 13.8vdc. So technically the FTX-1F puts out 1 more watt at low power, and does the same power output with an external source.
ohh. yet again I am learning sir. Thank you. Im glad that Yaesu literally 1 upped them.
Also announced in the US. Gigaparts or DX Engineering.
BEFORE you request a call sign, do a search in QRZ, FCC or ARRL, etc. to see if it is active or not.
why bother with 80m on such a compromised antenna ! not worth it IMHO.
To each his own. I like 80 and I have some nets I am on. Plus rag chewing with some buddies. So if I can figure out a way to make it work I would like to. The unicorn of 1 antenna for everything you do. It’s part of the fun too. So the experiment is worth it. Hope you have a great weekend and thanks for watching.
They have changed the book on how to wire them
How so? Is it much different?
Great Review. I have been looking for another HT.
I should have more coming on it in around the first week of September. Thanks for watching!
Sir regarding counterpoise wires do they to be pointed in a certain direction ie north south east west according to your geographical location I a in Scotland uk I have a Gabil tripod and gabil antenna new ham here just setting thing up.
In my experience with them then only thing that matters is making them evenly spaced out and the more of them tithe better. Thanks for watching!
I think it's a quite good antenna for its size. The negative side is that it's not having 80m, but for that size it's a great antenna. Anyone that seems to have had problems with that antenna is that it's not the antenna itself but the PL259/SO239 connectors that have a tendency to have a bad connection, especially DC connection that's needed to adjust the antenna. High quality PL259 connectors helps quite a bit, but it's worth to check the connections ever so often on a vehicle. In the event that you happen to break off the base - it's available as a spare part, so even though the spare part is expensive it's cheaper than a new antenna. I'm questioning the mounting on the toolbox a bit but with a pickup truck it's a bit of a challenge to get a good position. I have been using mine with a FT-857.
I agree. I have been very please with the performance of it. To get around it not working on 80 meters I a Ham stick that I can screw on to the same mount. Just have to take the ATAS off first. I have also been toying with the idea of an external tuner. I have a spare MFJ 939 I can use and just keep it in line. Then if I need to I can use it. Haven’t tried it yet through. As for the toolbox mount, well I don’t have many other options to keep it out of the way. My truck is pretty tall as it is. I don’t want to put it on the fender because I feel like it would block my vision. I am also found to be doing a lot of bonding this fall. Thanks for watching!
Try attaching the ground lug to a metal bench or a BBQ grill.
Next time I take it off the truck and play I will give it a shot! Sounds like it will work. Thanks for watching
Nice video for the ATAS 120a. I live mine with the 857. Only thing is you say your call sign to fast. Couldn't catch it. N1SHU.
K3EE and thanks for watching.
Great job do you have part# and what was cost?
The link is in the video description. And I think they are around 250. Thanks for watching.
Im just learning and dont know much. My question is- I thought an inverted V was a center feed or off center fed wire? I didnt know you could end feed an inverted V. Im learning more and more every video i watch. Thanks for publishing these video's for people like me.
You can run an inverted V with any wire configuration. They are ofter used that way with Dipoles or off center feed dipoles. But I often use my end feed half waves in an Inverted V and love the results. I have one at the my house and it is in an inverted L. Just throw the wire up and see what works. Thats how I do it and I am ofter surprised. Thanks for watching
@@Blackabeard Thank you
@@basicinfo.9315 no problem. If you ever need anything else please look me up on QRZ.com. My info is good there.
Thank you for your practical video. I am encouraged to buy an ATAS antenna. I am a resident of an aparmente so I don't have a yard for experiment like you but I'll try to install ATAS at the bulcony. Earthing will be the most important issue. Your video gave me some hints. Thank you from Japan. 73 de JL2XKK.
Thank you for watching. Earthing will be most important. But if the balcony is metal maybe you could attach it there. Best of luck my friend.
Great idea for the install. What size spacer did you finally? Thank you KN4OTZ, Jeff in Kentucky.
I think they are the 3/4 spacers. and they came from home depot
@@Blackabeard Thank you Blackbeard. Now I know how I will set up antennas on my pickup and did you ever do any bonding of truck bed and cab to frame or are you satisfied with the results of your setup? 73.

Try AP FOTO Delta loop ve3dal less footprint than you have now but you won't lose you gain. The Delta loop antenna doesn't have to be high like a dipole antenna. For 20meters 7.5 ft - 10 ft off the ground. Too high you will increase lobes and lose your effective gain potential.good luck!
Thank you for the idea!!! I will give them a look and see what I can find. Thanks for watching.
@@Blackabeardit's light and easy to break down use 14 gauge it doesn't get tangled like 18 ,20 guage wire.😊

How many tuners do you need!!!???
I have more. How many do you need? The internal on the dx10 will not tune my random wire for 160 so I use an external for that.

You are welcome! And thanks for watching.
Bond the box to the bed, the bed to the frame, the cab to the frame, the hood to the frame and the exhaust to the frame. Will drop your noise floor and make your swr lower. KE6VG
I have the bonding strap to do it. I tried once to get to it and got distracted and now it is way to hot. I will update once I find a cooler day in the fall. PS thats the reason I have not done anything with my new Yaesu ft500 either. It is still in the box because it needs to go in my truck and it is just to hot. Thanks for watching !!!
Have wanted one for home use for sometime but worried about the need for massive grounding
Well I don't have a lot of grounding at all. But everything you read will say you have to ground the crap out of it to make it work. I have part of a video that shows it will work just fine on without a lot of grounding. Best of luck and thanks for watching.
Be careful out there today, its ridiculously hot
It is so hot. But we are making a go of it through the storms and all
I have never before seen an ice vending machine... wow that is something else.
I love them. 20 pounds of ice for $3.00 USD.
Sorry late to the party, just found your channel, have you tried attaching a ground rod to the magic carpet? or for this set up longer ground radials approx quarter wave for 40m.
I have not tried the ground rod yet. How long of one are you using? I mean more grounding mean better antenna so I’m going to give it a go. Thanks for watching.
What is “Magic Carpet”?
@@slackleashdogtraining3598 The Magic Carpet is wire window screen. www.homedepot.com/p/Phifer-36-in-x-84-in-Brite-Aluminum-Screen-Roll-3000043/100390092
Why don't peaple look on utube at all the other vidios peaple have put ...they all seem to make the same vidios off the same thing..they need to get out more and find a life
Well I am not sure. I personally don't do it to duplicate anything on purpose if I do, but to make a video from my point of view. Or how I did something. In my life I have seen a lot of ways to skin a cat. And it is nice to find a new way every now and then. Thanks for watching and have a great day!
When working from a vehicle, I find that I can improve my SWR quite a bit by adding a spare 25 or 50 foot roll of coax between the mount and the radio (it's usually the 25+the 17 foot cable already on the mount). I just leave it coiled up on the floorboards in the back. In fact, I do that because I found that the effect is better when looking and acting like a "coil." Stretch the same cable out along the ground and back into the vehicle, and it does not lower the SWR quite as much. It won't help the Q on the hamstick, it is what it is, but it may get you somewhere near 1.6 with the same setup otherwise. Grab a barrel connector and give it a try!
IIRC, there is no such thing as FCC certification for ham bands. The FCC certification on these radios is for GMRS. We hams need to check the harmonics ourselves.
When they sent their new radio for review it was sent as a FCC complaint radio for the amateur bands. It is still dirty. And I agree we should all do our due diligence to ensure we are legally using our equipment should one be inclined. But I hope everyone loves their own life how they want. Thanks for watching.
@@Blackabeard You can look up the FCC cert ID. If it's part 15, then it's GMRS. If it's part 95, then it's ham. I've never found a ham cert ID for any radio.
@@Blackabeard For example, I just looked up the FCC cert for Tidradio TD-H3. It only applies to GMRS, even though the radio does ham frequencies.
I enjoyed meeting you and Mike this morning. My first activation was fun! Thanks for making that happen.
it was a great time and you did fantastic! Good luck next week on your upgrade. I can't wait to hear you on doing your own POTA !!
Wow so I couldn't just pop it on thr deck and make it work...
Well it will work. But the more metal around it the better. It does need a ground plain of some sort. Either radials or the magic carpet are the most used. But I have just plopped it down in my side yard and made contacts. So it worked. If i can help with anything just let me know. I am down to try most things.
@@Blackabeard I'm considering it or a wolf river coils mega
@@KE8ODY-WV-Ares-Ham-Dad-3O4 I have a few friends that have the WRC and th like them. The main difference is automated or manual extending the whip. here are some base measurements should you go that route. 20M =210" =204" 17M =162" =159" ISM = 140% = 1340 12M =118» =120" 10M =105" =101" Again If you are not using a Yaesu rig that has the ATAS interface then you will have to buy the program box for it. If your radio will do the ATAS then all you do Is press the tune button. Both are great options. One you can use it mobile and well not so much with the other. One note on the WRC, all my friends that have verticals with loading coils use radials to increase their ground plain. Not mandatory but it does help.
@@Blackabeard I have a yaesu Ft-710 so atas would work idk how I'd mount it and I hear they require mad grounding
@@KE8ODY-WV-Ares-Ham-Dad-3O4 Mine is grounded with a 16 gauge speaker wire to my frame. So sure if that is a lot or not, but certainly more than your deck would provide. I also not sure if you can go wrong either way. You can always do a redneck grounding wire. You make a ground wire that screws on to your antenna and the other end you wire a house plug to it making the ground wire the only connection. Then plug it in. Not a suggestion but an options I have heard of in peoples shacks. If you don't want to use ti mobile then the WRC would be my decision for sure.
Love my Atas120. Have mine mounted on a metal fence. Great video. Keep them coming 73 kg7fxn
Thank you. I love it too. I have not dismounted and used it much but when I do I love it.
The bracket is too thin and small and therefore prone to vibration. I would replace the bracket to one double the size/thickness.
I had the same thought, way later in the day. But so far so good. If I see anymore problems thats my plan.
Hey Justin! Youre gonna love the FT5D. I picked one up back in early 2022 and got the special orange belt clip from HRO that they offered when the FT5D was first released. I have the orange Signal Stick also. Makes it look like an old skool Yaesu from back in the day when they had the orange displays (which i love and have many radios with them haha). I still havent learned all the bells and whistles but have alot of fun with it on my MMDVM hotspot -- Jeremy KF4CHW
Jeremy thanks for that. So far I love it!!
What do you think? TalkPod A36Plus or a Quansheng UV-5K?
I would probably go with the Quansheng. Mostly because of the open source programming you can do with it. And I have not heard a bad word about it yet. Plus the fact that is natively a FCC approved Amateur Radio also helps sway my decision.
i got the Baofeng UV5R BEFORE I had heard of the Talkpod A36 Plus. I wish that I had waited. I like the USB charging on the Talkpod. I like that it does Airband. Most of all I like the scanning feature which I do not think that Baofeng has. One thing that did impress me is that Talkpod seems to have actually LISTENED to some of the initial American reviews of spurious emissions and other faults. They went back and corrected the issue added a couple of more minor features and added 3 watts of power to boot. Most Chinese companies would have just ignored their customers and said: " F*&K you all we got your money now"
It is still a bit of a dirty radio. But much better than the first one. When I am not careering my yaesu it’s still the radio I grab

Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching!
ATT 6db , preamp1? So you attenuated 6db and amplified 10db ?
Yes and yes. Some days I just keep pushing buttons until it sounds better. HIHI. thanks for watching.
Depending on your noise levels you may not want a full 10db and 4db is the answer. It's the same as a backing off a variable RF gain control for particular signal strength vs noise. I use that setting for 90% of the time. It's better for me for weak signal work on my FTDX 3000 than 10db or 20 db increases.
@@Sedona-cl6eg thanks for the advice! This is my first radio with filters so it’s taking some time to get in the swing of it. Thanks for watching!
@@Sedona-cl6eg A bit like fiddling while Rome burns ? I much prefer to use to RF gain to lift the noise floor. Sadly on my ic7300 the RF gain is a joke , a sick joke at that .
