    The first recorded race meeting was indeed in 1619 but there is a map belonging to the Burghley Estate dated 1615 showing a course. The last race meeting was in 1874 and it was only flat racing.

    The year of Mary's death is written that way to show that it's an OS (old style) date. The year used to begin on March 25th (Lady Day) from 1155 to 1752, when the Gregorian calendar was adopted. So 1586/7 shows that by the calendar in effect at the time, she died in 1586, but by the Gregorian calendar we use now she died in 1587. If they had just put "1587" anyone aware of the calendar change would either assume she died a year later than she did or have to look up the topic to get clarification.

    I remember very well the layout of Potters Way and the Running track when I used to work for the Parks Dept then , also where the Potters Way Pavilion that was the changing rooms for the football pitches on that piece of land behind the houses was when I started work there was the council tip . I can also see the old groundsman shed that we used for the maintenance macinery of the Running track and River embankment . I notice that the new builds are built on the old sewage works site but haven't used the old tip site for building for ovious reasons , but at present the tip area is now used as a nature area as not suitable for pitches any more due to the uneven surface due to land settlement . Happy days there then.

    Thank you for creating these two fascinating videos. Between 1967/71 I lived in the nearby village of Upwood and often visited and stayed with a schoolfriend at his home The Manor. (31:11) His father was a local farmer. I remember being shown around the areas you have covered. I also remember my friend showing me their field where an Alconbury based Boeing B17 crashed during the war. Each year of the ploughing season they would discover small bits of the aircraft. Years later I think when my friend inherited the farm, a lot of the land was sold during the late 1970s and turned into a housing estate. At around the same time the runways from RAF Upwood were dug up and used as aggregate for the A1 motorway extension. Back in the 1960s the whole area was lovely, peaceful and picturesque. From your videos I see a lot of what I knew as a child is still there.

    Fabulous video. Always been curious as to why there are so many houses named as "villas" in Fletton and Woodston (including our house), does anyone know why?

    • @PeterboroughImages
      @PeterboroughImages 2 місяці тому

      It was an element of snobbery inherited from the Romans who referred to any building of status as a "villa". In Victorian/Edwardian times, it became a tag that you put on a house to give it an air of quality.

    I love biking along that path next to the nene, then up to Whittlesey. Its NOT boring if you bike, the sense of space is so nice. If you're on foot maybe its dull, but you WILL NOT get better skyscapes anywhere else in England. Also recommend the path from Peakirk to Crowland along the top of a floodbank. Similar views and sense of space.
