Opal pocket is BLOWN AWAY! Not happy!! Opal Mining in Coober Pedy.
This trip I make the very costly mistake of not checking the drill hole dirt before shoving a bomb in it.
Busted, disgusted and war weary, with only a few chips from the drill hole to show for the several days of work, I drove to a claim I found good opal in 20 odd years ago but was way too exhausted and disappointed to bother. I decide to call it a dud trip and head back to the workshop in Adelaide.
Instead of driving south the next morning, a new day and new hope saw me down the old hole that was beckoning the day before. Boom! COLOUR!!

You guys are just awesome. The risks you take to bring the opal up to the top, sometimes watching these videos I actually get worried for ya. But you guys continue to do it. It’s gotta be in your veins! Keep pushing, keep doing what makes you happy sirs, God Bless and Keep ya safe.
Thanks again for watching mate! You’re right, once you get the bug it’s almost incurable.. Gotta say, God has certainly blessed us with being able to have some great adventures on the opal fields and indeed in our families. God bless you and yours in all you do as well mate.👍🏼🙏
So AWESOME ! I really wish I could go mining with you ! Do you sell any rough ?
Thanks mate! Yes we have parcels with more on the way soon at opalauctions.com/stores/graceopal Thanks as always for watching! 😊
Awesome! Hope you found many rainbows!
@@DanielBrownAU haha, cheers mate, a few little ones but still chasin! Hope to catch up one of these days!
Oh man I so want some of that material to cut !!! And hey, at least you were safe when that tnt went off. I for one am glad you walked out of there bud. Yeah, losing material is a shame, but I’ve watched a lot of your videos and I’ve seen the risks you take sir. Glad you’re still with us !!! God Bless
Thanks Bro! yeah it was a rare chance to film it underground beacuse the drive was very long, it looks closer than it was! A good lesson in slowing down and having peace, i was internally panicking a bit because i hadnt found opal that trip, thats why i didnt check the drill hole for trace. gotta have faith! Thanks as always for watching! God Bless you and yours too this Christmas mate.
Are these all your own mines?
@@ICTBKco Thanks for watching! I have a permit and pegged the gound in accordance with the regulations, none of the ground was currently pegged or occupied by other permit holders and was all within the Coober Pedy Precious stones field. We can peg anywhere that is unclaimed within the fields and have 48 hours to give ‘notice of pegging’ which means I can peg a claim and put the days date on the pegs, I must take a survey relative to a datum peg and notify the mines dept within 2 business days or pull my pegs. If I notify, I then have a further 14 business days to decide whether i want to pay for a three month registration of the claim, if I still want it after that, I must pay for 12 months rego at a time. In this video I was jumping around with a valid set of pegs chucked around the ground with the days date on them, never stayed anywhere long enough to need more than that.
@Opaldigger so cool mate. I worked out OD for alot of years and frequented Andamooka. I'd always wanted to see down one of the shafts
Awesome! I’ve always wanted to see down OD! 😅.. I love Andamooka, if only there was some opal left.. I know it’s still there but sweet FA compared to Coobs. Gods country out there..
What is your address? I want to send you a screw driver. Ive never seen anyone belt into color when theres a pipe in the face, let alone just belt into color. You blokes need to talk to some cutters and setters. To understand how much money the pick takes off.
Thanks for your comment! What you’re watching is not casual regard for gem opal, but decades of experience (to sound like a wanker).. With respect, I didn’t make a chip on the pipe that nature didn’t put there first and have cut and polished it and will soon set it in solid gold. We are cutters and setters and believe me I feel the end pain while digging out a stone and very, very rarely break a gem. Unless of course you’re talking about explosives in which case you could watch our latest video and see me pulverise thousands in gem shells, for which I do indeed stand condemned. 😢
I may have snicked it right at the start, but that was when I first saw the indication there was anything there at all. I liked the look of the ground and there were tiny crystal traces, that’s why I dug there. You’ll notice I then backed off and dug around until it came out safely in its two natural pieces.
love the gold specks in that ring! how much you reckon that opal dust would've been worth before kaboom!!!?
@@RobBudimir-wl2ic hey mate, thanks for watching! I reckon between 5-10k at at guess, I wouldn’t like to think more it’s too painful lol.
@Opaldigger faaaaark! that bloody hurts mate, love the vids, keep it up!
How many animals fall into those open mines?
@@greatplainsman3662 it’s very rare, in 30 years I’ve only seen a dozen rabbits, a couple of kangaroos and a cow. Many lizards and quite a few kangaroo mice unfortunately end up down there, we rescue them back to the bush wherever possible and build up and protect around our shafts.
Never fun. Glad I found your channel. Subbed.
@@Longbow-jt8jp Thanks for watching and for the sub! Much appreciated! 🙏

Leaving it to grow for 20 years, they only would have been baby stones back then, sustainable opal mining 😂😂😂😂😂😂. Thanks for sharing. Congrats on the finds, well worth hanging around.

Im from the Uk I’ve travelled to Australia. Currently in Coober Pedy after a very long road trip. Around 2000km from near Melbourne. Would absolutely love to experience some mining. Nevertheless its cool to see the area in real life
@@Amilf_Titler Hey mate! Sorry I missed your message, I hope you had a chance to at least see some of the tourist mines in town, almost as good as the real thing!
I found a cluster of clam shell opal near there that made me a fortune over the years, selling cut stones set in gold. It was about 60 kilos and i could barely wrestle it out of the cramped hole i dug it out of lol had to drag it back out and jump through all the hoops to get it back to the states. Well worth it. Beware of thieves and saboteurs out there. Stay safe.
@@BrianM-44041 wow, what a dream, many search for decades ‘ahem, shuffles awkwardly’ and never see such an astonishing find. We will just have to keep looking! Thanks for sharing and for watching mate, it’s nice to hear stories like this!
@@Opaldigger I would wager there is plenty more out in the ground it's just a matter of digging til you stumble across it. Fossil opal fascinates me and I've found shells, bone, and wood opalised in various places. Australia is a trove of treasures including gold, but the climate and local fauna is very unforgiving. That and some people are unscrupulous no matter where you go. I've known miners to be down in their mine shafts and have their vehicles and such stolen before they came back up, along with whatever they had mined prior. One even had his cables cut and the shaft sealed behind him! Working the jewelry circuit we met a lady who claimed to be the biggest opal seller of all time, named Bianca, who later turned out to be an opal thief that had screwed over more than a few miners and skipped town to America. I had the pleasure of meeting one of those miners when he travelled to Florida with the authorities to arrest her lol Lucky for us my father became friends with a gentleman named Paul downing, a famous opal miner and cutter, and he educated us on how to avoid such things. Two to 3 miners, working in shifts, well armed and equipped in two vehicles on every dig. Unfortunately, he had very few tips on avoiding the spiders! It seems like everything in Australia wants to kill you. It reminds me of the old West in the US. 😆 We visited coober pedy, andamooka, lightning ridge, mintabie, and a few other places and found some outstanding opals. Sadly he passed in 99 and I haven't been back since. I got to visit between the ages of 17 and 28 on multiple occasions when I was in the shape to do that kind of thing. The memories are as precious if not more than the stones. Keep at it , you'll find the that pile of fire.
One of my favorite gems,I have a opal that was found in Cooper Petty mine in Australia, beautiful!I love it,it belonged to my mother in law,she passed so in her memory we had it set.i wear it every day. miss you mom.❤️🙏🔥☦️🌹
What they are pulling from these walls is worth far more than gold than you can imagine..
I still believe Ethiopian opals one of the best. Australian is to over rated
@@KeithDee-pu8kz I love Ethiopian material as it has launched opal into the stratosphere in terms of public awareness. It makes huge cabs but the hydrophane (porosity) absorbs oils and contaminants often leading to yellowing over time that is irreversible, to date it resists treatment to prevent this. Australian opal displays a much denser, tighter, often brighter play of colour that suits smaller jewelry, is non hydrophane and is for the best part, stable for the long term with many fields offering rare heirloom, investment opal unsurpassed in quality and beauty. Thanks for watching!
@@Opaldigger Resists treatment? I clean mine in acetone. Never had a issue. Plus there's a method to treating Crystal opal so it doesn't shatter once it's dried out and being cut. It's an excepted treatment in GIA's eyes like emeralds being treated with oils. But the epoxy resin is expensive so you'd want to follow the instructions step by step and hope you get it the first time because you'll sure be discouraged from doing it again. Especially if you lose a pretty expensive specimen to start along with the time and material. I like all kinds of opal but I cut and polish them and Ethiopian are just easier to work with for me and cheaper in the long run when you're living in the US I'm not going to pay out of the a$$ for something that I'm taking a chance on. Although I would boulder opal. I love that stuff. Anyway to each his own I guess.
@@KeithDee-pu8kz Thanks mate, that’s interesting to know. I would have cut more Welo material I reckon but I’m an old school dry sander which of course is fatal to hydrophane as it heats the stone up and cracks it immediately. I do agree a lot of Australian opal is overrated, that’s why we try to focus on actual wearable beauty, not just brand. Although we love the brand Aussie opal! I hope Welo continues to increase in value and esteem too, the annual global spend on jewelry is around 12 billion at the minute, I reckon that’s enough for opal from all over the world to keep ticking!

nice. Now, make the five hour video of all the hard work, and failures, it took to get these beauties.
@@ThatOpalGuy Haha! Yes! Most of these are clips from existing videos on our channel that go into some of the detail you mentioned, only even a long video rarely touches on the many, many YEARS of struggle, disappointment and failure, literally decades of learning and studying the fields and mining methods.
