News began to leak last week suggesting that Elon Musk was taking real steps to enter the fray and join Google (Bard AI & Claude via Anthropic AI) and Microsoft (Bing chat & ChatGPT via OpenAI) in the AI Wars.
According to The Information, Musk had been approaching AI researchers about forming a new AI research lab called “BasedAI”. The goal of the research lab would be to compete with OpenAI and develop an “anti-woke”, less restricted alternative to ChatGPT, and by proxy Bing’s AI chatbot. These leaks were then confirmed by Elon himself the following day.
Elon’s AI fears have been documented as far back as 2014 and he's warned many times that he believes AI companies should be regulated. In this expedition, we explore the fears that led Elon to cofound OpenAI, the history behind OpenAI, and what Elon Musk's intentions are with the new AI company and chatGPT killer he is building.
Will Elon’s BasedAI be able to successfully compete with OpenAI and create a chatbot better than ChatGPT? Or will his “anti-woke” approach and intention to create an AI chatbot with fewer restrictions empower bad actors and lead to echo chambers?
