Here is a fix for the indexer style jamb peg dopsticks, as many are not as accurate as they shoud be. This simple fix will enable the cutting of perfect facet meets.

Thanks Bob
You're welcome.
Thanks for sharing Bob. Followed your instructions, and this actually helped to flatten my copper lap as well, as it it was slightly dished, I just had to do a bit more work with the 360 topper to get the lap flat, using a steel ruler as a guide. I use my copper lap as a pre-polish lap with 3k diamond. Lap is now cutting sharp and fast so I can move facets if required. I used to score my copper lap with a knife, but I will be using your method from now on. The knurling tool can be found on e-bay or ali-express. Thanks again.
Olá, lindo trabalho, como faço para comprar e aprender trabalhar com essa maquina, qual o valor
This is the Israeli machine. Check out the SOM or Brahm at kmtjaipur.com
Hello, how to buy this device😊
Look for BHandasa Israel and Kalpana Machine Tools India
Hi, could you please provide a diagram on a trilliant cut design?
You need a 48 index dop, then use any trilliant design.
@boblakey1359 sorry, I meant for a jambpeg machine.
Sorry, I don't use diagrams
Para mí está herramienta no es segura en los ángulos, por qué se pierde la hubicacion
It's a jamb peg, they don't have protractors
Love your machine but can’t find the provider
The machine is made by BHandasa, Israel or Kalpana Machine Tools, India
Olá eu me chamo Guilherme sou do Brasil tenho muitos crisoberilo de boa qualidade tenho mas de meio kilo interessa comprar vejo muito os seus vídeos parabéns
Buenos días cuanto cuesta una máquina como esa
check the KMT Jaipur website for price. A link is also on my website, search for "bobsjambpeg"
Great video Bob. I bought an architects square after this video and will check my cheater setting. Excited to utilize some of your tips and tricks now that I have my KMT machine here with me in France.
Hi Justin, you will find it makes using the jamb peg a pleasurable experience.
Thanks for the tip! I just brought my SOM to France and am excited to use it more.
The dops are just as important as the machine. The machine part is fine and with good dops, it makes a hassle free faceting system.
Faceting is hard enough with a half-decent machine, can’t imagine using a jam peg unless you’re a true masochist.
If you are serious about your faceting then the modern jamb peg is easier to use than a mast or handpiece machine.
Beautiful work admire your skill, btw how long have you been cutting? Regards John 👍😎🐈⬛🇦🇺
I started faceting about 60 years ago, and have used the jamb peg for the last 25 years
You need to make many other show with this gentelman. He has many things let to be discovered and to teach the the young and old gemstones faceting lover like us out there. This kind of master is the pure source of inovation in the industry A pure gem. congratuation again for your job. Keep the good work, we are with you.
Thank you, the lap was dressed for polishing very small , flat facets.
Hello, what additional wax do you use? Is this shellac with chalk? or something different?
Home made shellac based wax. I don't use chalk but I think it would work fine.
@@boblakey1359 Thank you for your answer, if it’s not a secret, what do you add to shellac? I made shellac 4, rosin 2 and crocus or chalk 6... but with crocus it seemed better to me. Some of us make a mixture of sealing wax and shellac.
@@boblakey1359 I am from Russia, I watch your videos with interest, I have such a “head”. a copy of the Israeli one, made by a very good turner and 5 additional ones with a collet for 8 sides and 3 additional ones with a collet for 6 sides, I looked at the links that you kindly posted, in India there are different ones, from 4 to 22 they wrote... I don’t think so they are running, I hope I need 5 (8 edges) and 3 pieces (6 edges each) for my needs......
@@СергейВальтман-е6ш The only decent index dops I have seen are the KMT dops, only come in 8 side=64index and 6 side=48 index. But unfortunately they have a minimum purchase quantity. I have made a 8 side=96 index but hardly ever use them. I would not use the index dopsticks on Ebay or Etsy as the ones I have seen ate very poor quality. contact KMT Jaipur, maybe they will sell you a small quantity.
@@СергейВальтман-е6ш I've kept my recipe secret because the last person I told started selling it. My machine runs 1400 and 2800rpm, and as long as I run a drop of water I don't have any problems. I just use the two ingredients, 4 parts shellac and 2 parts filler and it works very well for me. So once you get a recipe which works well for you, stick with it as it's going to be better than any commercial dop wax.
How are you, Sir? Can you teach me to be this machine?

Cuánto es el valor de una máquina como la q usted presenta
This machine made in Israel, quite expensive. I would recommend checking out the SOM jamb peg made by out KMT Jaipur,
Hello Bob, good morning! I hope to find you and your entire family at this time in perfect health, peace and prosperity. I'm a facet cutter in precious stones, I'm in Brazil, I'm looking for a machine like this to buy, it can be used, I don't have a lot of money, so it would be easier for me to buy a used machine, in good condition, and good price . I need to find someone who has one to sell and who will send it to Brazil. If you have any or know of anyone who does, please let me know, I will be very grateful and I can then send you some rough stones as a gift as a thank you. Greetings straight from Brazil Carlos
Hi, I have never seen a used jamb peg machine foe sale. The KMT Som machine is the same as mine and that is the one I would recommend. If you have a base you can purchase just the head, have a look at my website- bobsjambpeg.com
Hello from Germany- very nice instruction 😊🇩🇪⛰️✌️
Thank you
Onde posso comprar uma maquina dessa?
KMT Jaipur make the Som jamb peg, same as the Israeli machine
Okay-now I see the angle guide you are using--so your method has upgraded from completely impossible to extremely unlikely for me...ha ha ha!!! Actually it is simpler and probably not quite as difficult with some patience...Still, you should be very proud of your skill-most folks would shy away from precision handiwork and for you it looks like a challenge to see how many gemstones you can complete in a short time. Only a master gem cutter can work quickly as you do! You make it look so easy
That's the beauty of the jamb peg, no gadgets, easy to use and excellent repeatability.
You must have been doing gem faceting awhile. And I will bet you say that jamb peg is the best and only way to go-looks like it is not for a novice unless the novice has a private tutor named Bob Lakey! Fine job!
I bought my first mast machine in 1967. Been using the jamb peg for the last 25 years....it's not hard.
@@boblakey1359 The main thing I recall from around 1980, I believe I had a graves mast machine, is that the mast has flex and that's where skill has to be developed. This peg process seems allot faster, and more accurate?. I see you also had some left-hand down pressure? Great video.
@@constitutionalradiation3587 It is easy and it's faster
That’s a nifty machine.
The ultimate no-nonsense faceting machine. Really need to try one.
If you ever do then buy a good one, not the cheap junk.
Deliciously old school. I love watching your work, thanks for sharing!
12 stones in 4 hours. Twenty minutes to cut a stone???! Hard to believe.
That's 4 hours actual cutting time, preforming and transferring not included. Min 3 rows pav and 2 rows crown.
❤ que genial
Que me pudiera vender
The only tool required for this method is a knurling tool, you should be able to purchase this from any machine tool supply shop. For small stones probably not necessary.
I have been following Bob for a while and have two knockoff copies of the Israeli-made Jam Peg he uses which is no longer manufactured. These are manufactured in India. One I have never used and comes with four each 8, 10 and 12-sided dops that I am willing to sell for $500 USD, The Israeli machine was considerably higher in price and at the time not available without the base.
Is this a full jamb peg machine with adjustable / reverse motor, laps, etc
@@KennyRupp Most people seem to disregard the table attachment but it's an essential piece of the machine and reverse is necessary to use it
Edwin, did you buy a Som? The only useful dops are the 8 and 6 sided
Buenos días señor me gustaría saber cuánto cuesta o vale la máquina con la invension de facetado porq yo trabajo faceteando esmeraldas pero de bajo precio y mi herramienta o máquina es artesanal
Hi, the Israeli machine is not being made at this time and was expensive. The alternative is the Som jamb peg from KMT Jaipur, this is the same as the Israeli machine, for more information check out my website bobsjambpeg.com
Looks like that would be useful a lot of the time. Do you have to adjust it for each angle? Or do you just have to change the hole for the end of the dop stick?
It's not set for a particular angle, I set it at approx 32deg for the crown and adjust when pre-polishing, maybe up, maybe down a bit. All I need is 8 equal sized facets which gives me a girdle line . Only used for small stones.
Set an approximate crown angle for the stone, cut the 8 crown main facets of equal size, which gives me a girdle line and then it's removed
looking at getting a Som, not sure about how good the build is tho. Trying to find a review on the Som lap motor and mast. Might just get the new ultra tec VL, and figure out how to get the Jamb Peg working on the side somehow. I never worked on a jamb peg, but want to.. learning alot from your website and youtube videos, thank you.
The Som is the same as my Israeli built machine. I have a table attachment from KMT and the build is very good. Of all the jamb pegs I would have to go for the Som. The base and electrical side...I don't know. The head itself will last a lifetime, nothing to wear out or go wrong.
Thank you for the information. I’m gonna make the leap and make the purchase this June for the KMT. please continue with your awesome videos.
@@KennyRupp If you are serious about using the jamb peg you will find you can cut perfect meets, quicker and easier than any other machine.
@@boblakey1359 yes very serious and excited to start faceting with the Jamb Peg. Thanks for your help

Bob did you make the preformer yourself?
It's part of an old Korean faceting head and I just added the bearings
What makes is that machine ,how do you calibrate and where can I buy one
My machine is from Israel. Check out Indian faceting machines as there is one called the "SOM", looks the same as mine.
Hi Bob nice video, can you explain more about the numbers on the dip stick what they all stand for interms of which facets the numbers represent,I also acquired a jampeg

Hi Bob. Great job. Very interesting. I want to ask you after putting so much effort to charge the lap for how many stones to be polished it can be used? Is it only for one stones to be polished and then the process should be repeated all over or can be used for few stones to be polished, if for more then one how many?
Depends on the stones I'm cutting. Somewhere between 30-60 small sapphires and then a good clean and dress again with an old 600 topper can continue to use untill the scoring is gone...takes a long time.
