It was laying with a couple of pieces of scrap iron in the ground. That's what the red color is from

I cleaned it up, and now I'm sure it's lead. I found a bunch of little pieces of lead at that site. It makes me wonder if they were pouring bullets or something

That's a good idea. I will try that when I find some gum foil. I always chew Double Mint, and it just comes in paper, but I'll test this next time I find some gum foil out detecting.
